EHU? or is it just not proper camping?

We've been camping for a few years now and love it, although we haven't been this year yet. We've never had EHU, but towards the end of last years camping season we noticed that most other people do and most sites provide power.

Are we missing out on something here? What are the pros and cons?

I suppose it depends on what you actually need it for.

I cant actually think of anything that i need electricity for while camping.

So far we have managed with a coolbox to keep milk, butter and soups from home chilled from the freezer.

We got our EHU last year and i was invaluable. During that heatwave we were able to run a fridge which actually kept stuff cold and therefore fresh. Without it I would have had to have shopped EVERY day twice a day when the temp ws 35.

We have lights as well, and I admit to taking an MP3 player played softly whilst cooking I loved it.

However our fridge also runs on gas and we have gas lanterns as well, so we can be totally flexible n pitch we have no worries about camping somewhere without electric. Get a 3 way fridge and you are sorted

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 03/06/2007 18:00

I never realised until about a month agothat you could have ehu for a tent. Thought it was just the caravans. I have a cooler box rather than a tent and keep getting the iceblocks refreeed and that seems to work.

Surfermum · 03/06/2007 18:15

We're getting an ehu and a 3 way fridge, as we're going for a fortnight this year and I want to be able to keep stuff cold/fresh. We just about managed for 10 days last year but it was a pain having to swap cool blocks over each morning. I do like the freedom of being able to pitch where we like, so we can still use the fridge if it we go somewhere that we don't have hook up.

I want to have a decent light too as last year our gas/batteries kept running low, and I might take a radio so we can listen to the weather/surf reports.

But that's it. Deffo no TV, microwave or electric kettle. It's not what camping is about.

crunchie · 03/06/2007 18:17

ssss the coolbox if fine providided you can change the blocks every day and it is not TOO hot, last year it was just too hot and there is no way coolerboxes could have kept stuff cool, inside the tent got to over 40 in the day. The fridge was fab for this, cold wine.

Peachy · 03/06/2007 18:31

We don't bother tbh even though we were given a hook ip and we often use EHU p[itches (size of tent). Its pure cant be arsed or see the point

however if you want to- why not? I can see a fridge would be handy if you want to be eating chicken etc and not shopping daily

Peachy · 03/06/2007 18:32

We have a wind up radio / torch (Millets) for battery low moments LOL

Blandmum · 03/06/2007 18:43

We have used it for a fridge. We have also used it to power a laptop to watch DVDs

Surfermum · 03/06/2007 18:47

It was a right pain to have to take time out each day to buy our meals every day last year. Newquay was sooooo busy, so trips to the supermarket were really stressful and what was in the local Spa was limited. And there's nothing worse than warm white wine. It was the deciding factor, obviously.

I hadn't thought of a wind up torch or radio. Are they any good?

Peachy · 03/06/2007 18:52

The torch doesnt last long, but long enough to find batteries, and you can always keep winding for an emergency 3am trip to the loo. the radio is fine, it was under £15 in

quadrophenia · 03/06/2007 18:53

why not run a fridge off your car?

Blandmum · 03/06/2007 18:55

The fridge we used was a full size one that we rented from the campsite. I think it would tend to flatten a car battery!. Plus it would have defrosted when we went out in the car, leaving the frige behind!

tiredemma · 03/06/2007 18:58

we put a fridge in the car last weekend, it wasnt on all of the time- only intermittently- it flattened the battery and we had to push the car in the mud and torrential rain to start it!

think we will get EHU next time

quadrophenia · 03/06/2007 19:00

we have a leisure battery in our van, good for fridges, dvd,s that sort of thing, frequently flattens the battery but as we have two we just charge from the other!

crunchie · 03/06/2007 19:53

surfermum, what sort of fridge did you get in teh end??
