Campsites in Wales - Gower Peninsula

We are thinking about camping in Wales this Summer, as a change from our usual Devon/Cornwall holidays. Really like the look of the Gower Peninsular/Mumbles area. It will be myself, DH, DS 13yrs and DS 8yrs. We are in a campervan but don't necessarily need hook up. Happy with campsites that have basic shower/toilet facilities and perhaps a small shop and laundry. Not a big fan of evening entertainment. We like holidays with a bit of variety, nice beaches/walks/pubs etc. A few things to do in the unlikely event of wet weather!
Any suggestions/recommendations very gratefully received. Thanks in advance Smile

Nicholaston Farm is wonderful. A nice walk to the beach, has a nice little shop and cafe, plenty of clean showers/toilets.

I've stayed there twice now, once with a tent, once in a campervan, and would happily go back.

Agree with nicholaston

Skinandbones · 03/01/2018 21:25

We have been to Carmarthen near Kidwelly it's on a fantastic estuary and the sea goes out for miles. The nearest village isn't far but not much there. We were 3 adults and used it as our base, going off all day. Bloody brilliant holiday.

BluebellTheDonkey · 03/01/2018 21:26

Ooh thanks those both sound fab! Will have a proper look.

We stayed at three cliffs bay site a couple of months ago. Breathtaking

annandale · 03/01/2018 21:28

Three Cliffs Bay is amazing. You'd have to be happy either to scramble up and down a cliff steep path to the beach or to go the long way round. The field overlooking the sea is quite windy, the one at the back is more sheltered but less spectacular. I think it would make a great 2night stop on a longer holiday.

Poppins2016 · 03/01/2018 21:28

The Gower Peninsular is stunning. I've camped here: www.nicholastonfarm.co.uk/gallery.asp

The campsite is in a great location and it's only a short walk to the beach from the campsite. There's a shop, shower facilities and loos. All well maintained and clean.

I'll be watching with interest because we've been discussing going back this year, it'll be interesting to compare with other recommendations.

Poppins2016 · 03/01/2018 21:30

That was active while I was posting slowly... Glad to see the love for Nicholaston, it's a lovely place!

Caulk · 03/01/2018 21:31

Hillside is the best I’ve used by far.

SpottyGecko · 03/01/2018 21:36

One thing to be aware if you do holiday on the Gower is that three cliffs bay has a very strong current. I just wanted to put that out there so you're aware. Don't let that put you off though - the area is gorgeous. Just be aware and stay safe in the sea.

Taytocrisps101 · 03/01/2018 21:52

Try Carreglwyd in Port Eynon. If you go to the furthest field from the entrance you can park up literally in the beach! Sites not as level as you move away from the sea though. Gorgeous beach, couple of fish and chip shops, couple of pubs ( highly recommend The Ship) and you’re about 40 mins from centre of town if it’s wet or you need a change of scene.
Have also stayed at Bank Farm but wouldn’t recommend it, at least not our cup of tea!
Gower is beautiful... hope you enjoy 😃

Carregllwyd is stunning. My favourite.

BluebellTheDonkey · 03/01/2018 22:04

Lots of places to think about, thanks so much everyone. @Taytocrisps101 wow that does look stunning! I will take a look, thank you.
Oh, I want to go camping NOW

Thanks SpottyGecko definitely worth noting, we do like to go in the sea and the boys like to bodyboard, I will have to see if it is suitable.

There are life guards on duty on Port Eynon beach so extra reassurance if you have little ones in the water.
Gower isn’t huge so it would be easy to explore other beaches. Three Cliffs is gorgeous... park at Shepherds coffee shop in Parkmill and walk down through the wooded valley. Bit of a faff if you’re carrying loads of beach stuff so travel light! 😂

BluebellTheDonkey · 04/01/2018 16:12

Tayto we're a bit weird, we like a bit of a walk to a beach, we always used to as kids and the habit has sort of stuck! So a walk to a beach through a wooded valley sounds perfectGrin Thanks again for all the advice, DH is having a look too, the area will definitely be our destination this Summer.

Hope you really have a fab holiday! I live in Killay which is on the edge of Gower so know it pretty well. If you have any questions feel free to message me! Smile

llangennith · 04/01/2018 18:20

Don’t go to Hillend in Llangennith!

GoulashSoup · 04/01/2018 18:23

Both Three Cliffs and Hillend in Llangennith get votes from me. Walkable to surfable beaches etc. If you do got to Three Cliffs beware of the rip but there are lifeguards in the summer.

yorkshires · 04/01/2018 18:29

Three cliffs bay is fantastic

BluebellTheDonkey · 04/01/2018 18:38

Thanks Tayto (jealous!Grin)

BluebellTheDonkey · 04/01/2018 18:39

@llangennith can I ask why not? Curious now!

OP posts:
llangennith · 04/01/2018 19:23

The beach is lovely but it’s not terribly well monitored re noise levels. There is no electrical hook up and the site is uneven (bumpy) and sloping.
It’s a fabulous spot for bodyboarding and surfing (when there is surf), sand dunes for playing in, but despite the beach getting really busy there are no lifeguards.
We go there but we know what to expect!

BluebellTheDonkey · 04/01/2018 19:32

Ah Ok thank you llangennith, useful info. Noise at night would be a nuisance, I know you always get a certain level of disturbance when camping but I much prefer quieter sites with a no noise after 11pm or whatever rule.
