Camping Must-haves

We're going Eurocamping in France for the first time since there were only 2 of us; previously they were motorbike/credit card/toothbrush types of trips but now we have a 4 year old extra I suspect we need to be a bit more organised.

Do any of you Camping experts have lists of equipment/stuff that you take that you would be prepared to share ?

As you are Eurocamping, Twink, I don't think you really need to take anything more than for a non-camping holiday - you get fridge and light and elec. socket and proper beds and everything so in general just take whatever she likes to do on holiday - does that help at all? (pet pillows, blankies, cuddlies are essential of course, as well as whatever bedding you want - sleeping bags or duvets?)

Eurocamp reps have a stock of games and toys they lend out too. You could almost travel with just the toothbrushes and credit cards still (though a portable stereo and some nice tapes/CDs might be good).

A hotel

hmb · 28/06/2004 13:15

Flip-flops for the shower blocks are a good idea. A torch for late night visits to the loo, pegs, and kitchen wipes, a kitchen sponge and tea towels.

mummysurfer · 28/06/2004 13:17

are you in a tent or a caravan??

Twink · 28/06/2004 15:36

lol CD

A caravan (but I have to refer to it as a mobile home to stop dh having second thoughts !)

is it a hire caravan? if so you will need nothing really!

If it is your tourer, I have a list

hmb · 28/06/2004 15:57

You will have A GREAT TIME. I'd recomend that you take an old towel to use as a bath mat. My kids 'enjoyed' th shower rather a lot. It will bget mega grubby, so be prepared to bin it at the end of the holiday!

codswallop · 28/06/2004 15:58

ooh i was going to post this

my sis said a large cpntainer for take eaway frites!

cagoules

Fio2 · 28/06/2004 16:01

yes you need macs but you dont get that dirty in acaravan

mrsflowerpot · 28/06/2004 17:01

old sheets - the blankets they give you shed and I have never got one white one clean. I second the bathmat/old towel suggestion, the shower rooms are small and turn v easily into a paddling pool (or that might just be us!).
If you're going somewhere hot, my top tip is take half the number of clothes you originally get out to pack - we always live in about 2 changes of clothes as they wash and dry in a couple of hours.
I am so jealous, we've done this the last 3 years and we're not going this year...

waterproof trousers are a godsend for the kids. Means they can just play around and they don't get mucky, even if the grass is damp etc. Gelert do the best kids ones.

Twink · 04/07/2004 12:23

Great, thanks a lot guys. Only 2 weeks to go & counting !

just returned to this ...we're off early in the morning to Keycamp, northern france all thanks to the Mumsnet competition.
just off to look for old towel/bathmat.

other things i'd add to the list are
insect repellent,
matches
strong smelling loo fresh, one of those you hang in the bowl. parazone seem to be the strongest smelling without being sickly.
went somewhere similar last year and found that the loo in a small bathroom and the megga heat resulted in SMELL

if you find the mobile home shower too small you can always use the shower block which was immaculate

Slinky · 04/07/2004 13:06

Definately agree with the Bath mat

I take our own bedding (ie duvets or sleeping bags) rather than use their blankets - this was a tip from a friend who has Keycamp/Eurocamped for the last 10 years. Glad I listened - as when I've been the last 2 years I've seen lots of people using the blankets for sunbathing/left out in the rain etc.

Other than that, can't think of anything else you'll need - Eurocamp/Keycamp more or less provide everything else.

We're off with Keycamp 5 weeks on Thursday - and counting

mummysurfer · 04/07/2004 13:08

tea towels, dishcloths, washing up liquid,

crunchie · 04/07/2004 15:39

Oh I got a great thing this year, one of those electric ignition thingys. You know the little gun things that have a little flame that you can use to light the cooker/bbq etc. I found it soooo useful. No fiddling with matches and buring fingers lighting hobs and BBQ's

codswallop · 04/07/2004 15:44

giod tip

littlemissbossy · 04/07/2004 15:46

don't take loads of clothes, just what you need plus washing powder, most sites usually have good washing and drying facilities
I also take binbags, washingupliquid, food bags/clingfilm, foil, dishcloths, tea towels, pegs, antibacterial wipes, toilet cleaner and loo rolls

littlemissbossy · 04/07/2004 15:49

also, a couple of little garden candles, nice to light when the night draws in, you're relaxing with a glass of wine and the kids have gone to bed (as if )

Slinky · 04/07/2004 16:03

ooh little Miss Bossy

Thanks for that tip - hadn't thought of them! Going to get some before we go incase DH and I fancy nice little romantic evenings together

Fat chance - with our 3 kids, plus various friends and their kids

codswallop · 04/07/2004 16:03

make sure they're those citronella candles in case of mozzies...

mummysurfer · 04/07/2004 21:31

i also take blackout linings from some old curtains. they do both bedroom windows - keep the early morning sun out and if left there all day keeps much of the heat from the sun out

Lara2 · 09/07/2004 12:38

Toilet paper!!!!!!
