I went to the Caravan and Motorhome Show at GMex today.....and found the idea of owning a caravan rather appealing.....

Please tell me how awful they are......and how my tent is fantastic....

I did get a free Camping Magazine though, that looks fab.

I know it was rather nice, with bunk beds at one end and an oven

God I feel like a traitor to the cause.

No, tis true, they are appealing! My parents have always had a caravan, and so all my childhood holidays were taken in one. My DC love staying in it too, now.

foxtrot · 20/01/2007 16:03

My dad wants to upgrade his this summer, i think he wants one with an iPod dock! The current model has a cocktail cabinet!

Lucycat · 20/01/2007 16:05

cocktail cabinet .....nooooo, save me!

The Camping magazine is this one

RubberDuck · 20/01/2007 20:53

We have a folding camper which is sort of a hybrid between the two and love it as it tucks away in the garage and is easy to tow (as dh says, we're not light campers - if we had a tent we'd still need a trailer to take all the stuff - why not have the bed in the trailer too!).

If we had the space to park at home (i.e. not have to rely on a storage company) and had a big enough car to tow we'd be very tempted to upgrade to a caravan...

Lucycat · 20/01/2007 21:20

I think I've come out of the other side of the dark caravanning thoughts - just been looking at the camping stuff in the new Argos catalogue

bwahahaha

Blondilocks · 21/01/2007 12:22

How much do they cost? Have no idea!

I think out of staying in a caravan or a tent I prefer the caravan - at least you can stand up & have water inside & proper beds.

Doubt I'd ever own one though.

Fillyjonk · 21/01/2007 12:27

lucy

I am lost for words

no, it is soooooo wrong

And can someone tell me please, why caravans always seem to come in soul destroying pastels?

Cath Kidston has not yet made a caravan (though I don't know if that helps or not...)

PeachyClair · 21/01/2007 19:06

Blondilocks- you can get tall tents y'know! Ours has 2.10m head height LOL

Rubberduck, that was so very, very .

Luce- shame on you!

PeachyClair · 21/01/2007 19:07

OOh yes Filly- those nasty terracotta and peach interiors

bleeurhh

I was reading a revireew for one (in my camping magazine) and it was huge amounts of ash ans it still had THAT interior. Vomit inspired, you could say.

quadrophenia · 21/01/2007 19:12

er buying a vw campervan last year i did go through a phase of looking at trailer tents and cravans and thinking, ooohh what we could have had for our money but glad we didn't really! vw campers are still very much a camping experience although did i tell you we have a digital telly, with free view

quadrophenia · 21/01/2007 19:13

after not er

Marshmellow · 21/01/2007 19:25

Definitely a traitor!! You will be frowned upon by all fellow campers on the campsite (they will deny any envy towards your warm, clean, cosy setup!) Stick with the tent, enjoy the mud, wind howling, no t.v and just seek comfort in the "zip zip zip" of the tent each time someone needs the loo!

Lucycat · 21/01/2007 20:04

OK OK OK - I know - it was an aberation and I shall regret it forever.

Have been reading my lovely new 'Camping' magazine this afternoon and I have returned to the true path......

I did notice that caravan awnings have 'patterned curtains' - why? all we have on our tent is a zip up flappy bit to keep the light out!

OP posts:
Fillyjonk · 21/01/2007 22:07

yes

I feel my last year's khyam harvard was campervan inspiresd in the vomity decor

and that broke the fourth time I tried to put it up. 500 miles from home. I had to Inprovise, alone, with 2 grumpy toddlers, then make a dash for millets in the morning.

So.

Skribble · 21/01/2007 22:17

Careful now

mrsnoah · 21/01/2007 22:21

Lucycat how lovely!

I think they are great! Would love to trot round the country like a snail with me house on me back
I just dont get why people would want to freeze to death under canvas when they could be in a heated little house on wheels.

The old people have given it a bad name but I theink we are due for a caravan revival (would you tell my dh tho cos I darent)!

Skribble · 21/01/2007 22:44

oh yes caravaning could be the new spa breaks.

RubberDuck · 22/01/2007 06:15

PeachyClair: Oi - less of the - I own one of those! (Admittedly ours is over 10 years old, but hey, if I could have a brand new one... I would)

Still get the zipzip noise of the tent bit, but you're off the ground and you have the cooker/sink bit built in (even a loo and oven if you go for the luxury models).

RubberDuck · 22/01/2007 06:15

erm ... folding camper even.

Blandmum · 22/01/2007 07:15

All together now,
'Lucy is a tin tenter, Lucy is a tin tenter!'

(actually I always wanted one but dh wouldn't tow it, and I'm too much of a wuss)
