Icey tek - squeeeeeee!

A 40l orange cube iceytek (and two gel packs, because if you're going to spend that much on a cool box what's another £25 on ice packs) is winging it's way to me as we speak!

I'm so excited!

It's also taken me 3 years to get to the point of actually buying one.

And yes, they're so worth it after I borrowed a friend's for a weekend and we had ice in our G&Ts on the second night, cold white wine and the kids got ice cream all weekend.

Ah good - finally a response! She called back half an hour ago. Delivery refunded and profuse apologies. Admitted full ramshacklery. She was actually really nice.

The gel packs are being sent out tomorrow for anyone who's waiting on those.

I've just opened the box.

DH is going to skin me alive. It's bright orange and HUGE! There's no way I can hide it. I'm just going to face it out and serve him G&Ts with ice at the weekend. That should hopefully win him over. Or so drunk he forgives me.

But so beautiful and practical too...

Just to give you an idea of size, here is a photo of the 40l cube in front of a chair. And yes, it's right in front of the chair, and yes, it's almost as big.

Ha ha! They're not compact are they? Grin

Gel packs arrived today. We're all good to go.

The 25l just wouldn't be big enough for wine bottles and beer bottles and cans of g&t for all the food we eat Grin

That was my reckoning pink hence the 55l Hmm
The worst bit was we live in a very small stone cottage with a very quaint little porch- it took two of us to manhandle the box through the two doors, it was so tight. It was such a palava that by the time it had actually landed in the sitting room, DH had sort of got used to the size already :o
it also takes two of us to get it into the loft and it only just fits

So how do you fit everything in the car? We have an Alhambra, so a fair amount of boot space, but by the time we've got everything in there just isn't a lot left. I measured out the size of these things and even the 25l is considerably bigger than our usual cool box - I can't think of anything I can leave behind in preference of a giant, albeit brightly coloured, cool box!

We take going to have to take two cars now. One for gear, one for kids. Blush Grin

We can't have a trailer or roofbox because dh's car (seven seater) is a company car and gets changed every six months. My car is a 10 year old Fiesta.

We just managed to squeeze all the gear and people into the seven seater last year. This year we have a new tent with a bigger pack size, kids that have grown including a teenager the size of a man, and an Icey-tek. We need both cars.

Ummm - can someone explain to me why am Icey Tek is better than a much cheaper normal cool box? Don't get me wrong - I get excited about funky camping stuff too. But I just Googled an Icey Tek and.... it's a cool box Confused. I don't geddit. Am I missing some amazing features - does it make you a gin and tonic?

It retains it's chill temperature longer so will stay properly cold for over a week, as opposed to a couple of days at most.
You have to top up the freezer blocks/ice just the same but normal coolboxes inevitably warm up and stop chilling...the icey-tek just keeps going.
It's to do with the material it's made of.

P.s they are an Australian product and were initially manufactured for bush trips.

Mainly it's to do with the insulation they use.

Ahhh - thanks, pictish. Well that does sound good, especially as we have been known to go on 3 week camping trips. Chances of persuading dh to get one? Zero. He's more of a minimalist camper - thinks all you need is a sleeping bag, a tent and a bottle of whisky Grin.

Why oh why did I look at this thread?!

I've wanted an Icey Tek for, oh, 3 years. Sooo expensive though, and big it seems.

Can anyone tell me if a 25l is doable for 2 adults and 2 young children? Camping for a max of 5 days. I would love a 40l but I just can't see how it would fit in an already overpacked estate.

Also, I know it's just been asked, but is there a cheaper cool box that is anywhere near as good? Will food actually be kept super cold during the whole camping trip (I think I know the answer already)?

if I bought the 25l am I going to wish I bought the 40l?

We used ours first time last August for a 10 day trip (hotel first and last nights, and then camping) in Germany. I packed it on the Thursday morning and didn't open it. On Saturday we went to buy fresh groceries for the campsite and I was terrified that my expensive box would be rubbish. So bought a big bag of ice cubes as well and chucked on top.

On Monday night we went to get stuff out for BBQ and the ice cubes were still frozen!!! Tuesday night we had to leave the milk outside to defrost for breakfast! And DH loved being able to put warm beers in and have them chilled a few hours later GrinGrin The kids call it Tekster and treat it very lovingly. It's my third child...lol

I think a 25l would do, but just wouldn't hold as much wine, beer and choccy!! We do end up putting almost all food (bread, etc) in our 40l by the end of the trip because there's lots of space in it

Ah, how much is not a lot of beer/wine?

Report
pictish · 04/06/2015 17:59

You can't stand a wine bottle up in a 25ltr, but you can lie it on its side.

I am so torn. We only really ever camp for a maximum of 3 days so I know I don't really need one, but it would be so nice to be able to have cold food for 3 days - our normal cool box can't manage that. But on the other hand they are rather big, and rather expensive, and my husband would think I'd gone crackers...because we don't really need one!

...but I want one!

Add up cost of normal cool box + petrol to shop for fresh cold milk every day + higher prices for cold beer at campsite shop + the relaxation factor of not having to leave the campsite for anything + not having to have the car cleaned after child vomits from food poisoning from warm burgers = BARGAIN!!

Panda, you are a genius mathematician!
On a wellbeing note, ice in gin, properly cold beers and ice cream always make you feel good whatever is happening.

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about the cost of the 3 months of therapy after a family camping trip that didn't include iced G&Ts. My Tekster actually should have been MORE expensive GrinGrin

Mine has been cooling since last night ready for it's first outing this weekend. I'm taking ice cream!
