We are going to buy a tent, it will be mostly for weekends or long weekends and maybe a weeks break next year.

I don't know if we should get a big tent or average sized, there are 4 of us, 2 adults, 2 children who are 9 and 12.

Have been looking at the outwell rockwell 5 tent.

Then thought we should just get a big tent, thinking the outwell whitecove 6 tent, my question is will this tent be to big for weekends?

Can you add links to the tent you use for weekends/long weekends away.

Thank you Grin

We use a quechua popup for weekends, we can literally pitch it in 5 minutes and after the first couple of times can get it packed away in 10. There are 5 of us and it is plenty big enough but your dc's would need to share.

Thank you anchovies, your link seems to take me to my thread.

Also looking at the Hi Gear Frontier 6 premium tent.

Forgot to say we also have a hartford [[http://www.campingworld.co.uk/en/Outwell-Hartford-XLP-Tent-2014-Evolution-Collection/m-3931.aspx]] which is gigantic and we very rarely use it now - I thought I would prefer a massive tent but the thought of fitting it in the car and then putting it up puts me off taking it every time!

anchovies · 16/07/2014 16:33

Wow linking fail!

The first one was this: www.decathlon.co.uk/seconds-family-42-xl-tent-family-tent-id_8245573.html

And the second: www.campingworld.co.uk/en/Outwell-Hartford-XLP-Tent-2014-Evolution-Collection/m-3931.asp

Prefer the smaller first tent!

momb · 16/07/2014 16:34

We also go lightweight for weekends. Vango Tigris/Icarus/Quechua seconds depending on how many of us there are.
TBH it isn't the tent so much as the amount of kit which makes the difference to weekend camping. The Rockwell 5 looks nice.

FrozenAteMyDaughter · 16/07/2014 16:47

We use either a bell tent or a Quechua Seconds 4.1 (or something). They don't sell them any more sadly but you can still get them on ebay from time to time. There are only 3 of us though.

We also have a Vango Palena 600 (I think it is). It is a brilliant tent but having done it once for a weekend, I would only take it on longer trips now I think - maybe 4 nights upwards. Otherwise, the weekend is really all about putting the tent up and taking it down again.

CampingClaire · 16/07/2014 16:47

We use an Outwell Nevada M for one night. Anything more than that and the big boys get pulled out. I like my space and comfort and it doesn't take much longer to put a mammoth tent than a medium sized one really...plus...we still take the same amount of stuff whether its a weekend or a month!! Cannot seem to travel light!

standingonlego · 16/07/2014 16:55

We have the same Quercha pop up as anchovies it is perfect for weekends. Love it!

Our big posh 6 man tent is languishing in the garage!

FreeLikeABird · 16/07/2014 17:16

Lots of ideas.
I like the quercha pop up tent, I think you have all made my mind up about having anything to big, it will mostly just be used for weekends, if we decide to do a week long camping next year then maybe we can purchase another for that.

Don't want to be spending ages putting a tent up just to take it back down a couple of days later.

Hank you for your links and suggestions, it's helping.

We generally only ever camp weekends, but even if it's just two nights, I CBA with a pokey little tent. This was a big part of our decision to get an inflatable tent as we wanted a big tent that was still quick to pitch and strike.

A family pitched their enormous pole Vango near us last week, only a bit bigger than ours but took them the best part of 2 hours to pitch and they weren't even faffing. They only stayed two nights. Ours is up and down in minutes.

Slubberdegullion · 16/07/2014 19:50

Two outwell popups and a tarp if rain is forecast. Cba with fancying about with pitching and striking for just one or two nights.

Slubberdegullion · 16/07/2014 19:53

Lol at cba xpost with Pru.

God I do love a roll up the sims, stuff the sleeping bags and then a cock and balls fold and bag dismount flourish to finish. We were so damned slick at Slton a towers I wished someone had been watching.

BoiledPiss · 16/07/2014 20:35

Slubber i just watched the video and Grin at cock and balls fold!
That tent is amazing!!

ViviPru · 16/07/2014 20:42

Super mental image of Slubber flinging arms aloft and puffing out her chest Olga Korbut style after that performance...

Slubberdegullion · 16/07/2014 20:53

I have been videoed doing it, such is my mastery of the pop-down.

Now I like to do it all casual like, maybe whilst having a chat about the cabinet or instructing a child how to complete a particularly tricky loom band.

Inside I'm thinking though 'I OWN this technique. I fucking WIN at folding this tent'

Slubberdegullion · 16/07/2014 20:54

The tarp though is a whole different matter. So far that bitch owns me.

standingonlego · 16/07/2014 21:31

slubber laughing at "cock and balls" fold that is the point at which we doubt the technique everytime we fold ours up - NOW i will remember it Grin

BoiledPiss · 16/07/2014 21:35

Grin Grin

nikki1978 · 16/07/2014 21:46

We use this for weekend camps. You can get the 6 man version too. I like the fact that you can stand up in it and it has a living space and a porch area.

Vivi what tent do you have, it sounds amazing, anything that is going to not waste my time for 1-2 hours is worth it's weight in gold Grin

ViviPru · 16/07/2014 22:06

Slubber that sounds like mad skillz.

Free wow someone I've not told about My New Tent. We have the Outwell Harrier L and I think I might love it more than my DH, my hound and my unborn Prulet combined....

If you're not quite in the market for full-on polycotton SmartAir inanity though, on our journey from sensible tent purchase to crazed, tent-of-a-lifetime savings-raiding madness, we passed the Quetcha Family Seconds Air range from Decathlon. The Quetcha ones seem like a really good option for the price....

FreeLikeABird · 16/07/2014 23:10

Wow vivi that is one amazing tent, I think I might love it Grin
The price though Shock I think we have some saving to do, maybe I could start selling the house furniture and Dh's clothes Wink

OP posts:
ViviPru · 17/07/2014 00:11

There's a ridiculous deal on it here which is frustratingly an even better price than I paid last month. Only marginally so, but still...

Do check out the Quetcha though if you do consider inflatable, I was impressed by them.

ColouringInQueen · 17/07/2014 00:18

We have a vango Icarus which is perfect for weekends (you could use it for longer if you were keen Wink) two good bedrooms and a central living room with good window and ventilation options...

Icarus

we got ours in the sales last year, about £170 I think. Really enjoying it.

gardenfeature · 17/07/2014 06:19

Quechua Base Seconds 4.2. Really love it, it's up and down in minutes but as mentioned, they sadly don't make it anymore. We have a big Outwell Hartford that is gathering dust - it's a lovely, big, better quality tent but is too big and too much hassle for just a weekend.
