Anyone with a Quechua 4.1 answer a quick question?

Thinking of one for weekends because our Khyam is gorgeous but a MONSTER

There are four of us - dh and me, and dds (11 and 7). Will it fit four people in? Dh and I sleep on an airbed and kids on self-inflating mats, all the reviews I've read go along the lines of 'two of us slept in this with room to spare' and 'this gave lots of room for me and my toddler'.

What about four actual people? Will we fit in? Also is it cold and draughty at night with no proper SIG? Is there a footprint groundsheet? Can we fashion on out of a ratty old tarp?

etc

No cappster I don't think you would all fit in.

we have managed with 3 single airbeds but it is a bit of a squeeze and the feet end doesnt have a huge amount of space.

It is a great tent, I love mine but if all four of us go away with it we stick the Dd's in a pup tent.

It can be a little drafty in the living area if it is very windy but then we do tend to leave the door open because we have a base seconds added on as a porch.

We have never used a foot print but I do always put a seperate groundsheet down in the bedroom.

I think you would find the 4.2 better for your needs or go with the pup tent.

Good luck whatever you decideSmile

thisisyesterday · 14/06/2012 21:43

yeah you'll fit easily!

we just camped in ours with 2 adults and 3 children. admittedly my children are younger (7, 4 and 3) but it was fine.
not draughty at all because the groundsheet (yes tis a footprint one) velcros up around the rest of the tent, and the bedroom is fully enclosed

it's perfect for a one night/weekend tent

Ineedalife · 14/06/2012 21:46

LOL, thisis, We must take up a lot of space thenGrin

thisisyesterday · 14/06/2012 21:49

yes, i hope this clears things up for you cappster Grin

i have to admit, it was cosy. and it didn't look like we'd fit... but we did!

thisisyesterday · 14/06/2012 21:50

i reckon it's the airbeds maybe? i bet 2 single airbeds are wider than 1 double?

we had a double airbed, and easily enough room for 2 and a bit SIMS for the kids

LostInWales · 14/06/2012 22:01

I would recommend the 4.2 as a brilliant tent. We spent a week travelling down France, stayed in a villa in Italy for a week and then a week travelling back with ours. 2/3 night stops each time, DH and I, DS' 2 & 3 in the 4.2 and DS1 in a 1 man pop up. We had every type of weather from storms to 30 plus degrees and it was an awesome tent. We haven't used our monster tent since (anyone want to buy an Outwell Harford XL?)

Ineedalife · 14/06/2012 22:07

You are right thisis 3 singles measure approx 240 cm they are roughly 70cm each.

I actually have a SIM now but haven't managed to convert the rest of the family.

Ineedalife · 14/06/2012 22:08

UUUUhhhhh, 210cm not 240!!!

I do know my 7 times table honest Grin

LostInWales · 14/06/2012 22:09

We all have SIM's as well. Much easier to pitch/break camp than a bloody airbed (and warmer too, and no sweaty inside either)

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 14/06/2012 22:13

yup, loads of room, we four sleep fine in our quechua which is 230 x 230 and with a bedroom inner. (our tent is basically the front part of the 2.1).

HOWEVER. it would be impossible to fit two double airbeds, we bought sims instead and floor out the whole area, pretty much. so warm and lovely.

Ineedalife · 14/06/2012 22:13

I am going to shut up now and go to bed, I have had a challenging week and have run my first Guide meeting as temp Guide leader tonight.

So despite being proud of myself I am knackered and ready for bed.

I hope you like whichever tent you chose cappster

Cappster · 14/06/2012 22:26

I love this: "oh it'll be cosy/ spacious" "oh it will be windy/ cramped" Grin

I know that the 4.2 looks gorgeous but the 4.1 is £99 at the moment and that's it's biggest attraction for me, tbh Blush

there is NO WAY I am going on a SIM. The kids like them. They still feel to me like sleeping on an (albeit very warm) piece of cardboard

that's why we got it too cappster. bargain.
easy to pitch and put down again too. we were camping last week in the rain/gales and it was just fine

we ARE pretty hardcore though Wink we were cooking over the campfire and everything

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 14/06/2012 22:33

ah. i wonder if i'm getting it mixed up with a BASE seconds 4.1? i don't like that £99 one because dh couldn't stand up in it, i think.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 14/06/2012 22:36

i thought you were talking about this

SparkyUK · 15/06/2012 15:24

the base seconds 4.1 is currently on sale for £99. DH says no (we have a wonderful new tent, we've only used once) but considering the bargain and quick pitch time it just seems perfect for overnights or what have you. Contemplating buying it and hiding it until he agrees with me.

thisisyesterday · 15/06/2012 15:39

yeah that's the one we have. it really is great for short stays

only downside is that you DO need 2 of you to take it down

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 15/06/2012 16:28

I looked at it but settled on the more pricey 4.2xl after deciding we really couldn't shoe horn myself, dh and nearly 10 and 8 year old dses in it.

The hole pop up concept is amazing though, really impressed. Putting it up was considerably easier than getting it down ut we shall be having another practice this weekend. Garden camping for us this weekendGrin

I'm hoping that I will be able to get it down with me and the dses to act as ballast to hold it down while I fold. If thats the case we can go when dh is working.

Wen just wanted a weekend tent that didn't take an hour to pitch. We do like a big tent normally so the 4.1 was just too small but it is definitely a bargain.

DowagersHump · 15/06/2012 16:32

Doyouthink - I can manage fine now with one helper so you'll get the hang of it. Like you say, you just need a bit of ballast!

I fit double airbeds into the 4.2. There isn't room for a lot else in the bedrooms but it's not really a problem

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 15/06/2012 20:20

the technique for getting them down (i do it on my own) is to tuck any spare bits into the triangle first and note where the orange tie is, then make a massive cock and ball, straddling the cock.
then, as with the real thing, DO NOT TWIST. fold gently.

so cock and balls and do not twist, basically. Grin

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 15/06/2012 20:38

or i might be talking about the BASE ones again...

DowagersHump · 15/06/2012 20:49

How do you fold the front corner into the back opposite one on your own Aitch? That's the bit I struggle with (although I agree with you about the cocknballs bit :o)

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 15/06/2012 20:55

i'm not saying i do it elegantly... but i basically, while straddling, grab the side and then i suppose sandwich myself under it while folding with it under my armpit.
dh finds this strangely arousing.

have just seen this recommended on here. you reckon this would work as an awning for a pop up..? it's the one thing i yearn for.

gerbo · 15/06/2012 21:07

I don't know about the Quechua 4.1 but we have the four mAn pop up '2 seconds' tent which is totally brilliant. There would be plenty of room in there for four of you, we are four although our children are only five and two, and there was tons of space. And it was cos warm. And it took about 7 mins to put up and take down, after only two initial tries a home.

Go for it!

gerbo · 15/06/2012 21:10

Forgot to say, we have four self inflating mats to sleep on, and laid side by side, there's still room to spare. Not acres, but enough for a few bags, wriggling kids and grown ups, etc. It's called the xxl two seconds by Quechua and is BRILL.
