We got pretty wet in Devon last weekend. And have cancelled our plans to go to Cornwall tomorrow for another camping weekend. I'm a fair weather camper by choice, I have been camping so often in bad weather but am not enthusiastic.

House is currently full of very wet tents.

lisad123 · 06/06/2012 18:01

Sitting outside tent watching kids play, been a great day with tiny amount of rain here in Dorset. Tomorrow is heavy rain till 4pm so off to splash down in the morning Grin
It was meant to be terrible all week but so far not too bad Smile

MegBusset · 06/06/2012 19:00

Am thinking of booking for weekend after next, it's got to be sunny by then hasn't it Grin

hillbilly · 06/06/2012 19:17

Just arrived back from a fantastic few days at Breck Farm in Norfolk. Sunday wet when we arrived but we had help putting the tent up from friends who arrived the previous day. Monday beautiful and we went to Sheringham and on the steam railway. Tuesday hung out on the site, lots of woodland, ropes swings and a huge field great for football and kite flying. Rain last night (lots of it!). Soooo happy we went - the site was really good. I would recommend it and we will definitely return.

Apparently it's going to be very windy Friday, should be interesting putting the tent up! Pissing down Sunday, wet stuff to put away.. Sad

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 06/06/2012 22:32

We're battening down the hatches for tonight and tomorrow!

Wish us luck!!

lisad123 · 07/06/2012 08:51

Last night was not nice and have hardly slept Sad hoping the gales don't arrive and we are all safe tonight Confused

maxmissie · 07/06/2012 08:53

Well we were going with friends to Woodhall Spa today til Sunday but due to already peeing down rain and forecast of rain and very heavy winds for tomorrow and Saturday we have now cancelled. Kids are pretty devastated, now trying to come up with decent alternatives for them!

EssieW · 07/06/2012 09:04

We're just back from Lakes. Dry but v cold. I stupidly left my down jacket at home and regretted it all weekend....

Glad to hear a good report from Breck Farm as we're thinking of going but have been put off a bit by reports of not so good facilities. May give it a go for a weekend anyway. Lovely area though.

dumbelina · 07/06/2012 09:21

Off to the wychwood festival tomorrow. Forecast looks very slightly better than it did a couple of days ago. Fingers crossed!

lisad123 · 07/06/2012 12:52

Just waiting for small gap in the rain and then we are packing up and getting out of here. Wind is meant to get really bad this evening so made decision to go home while we still have a tent left! Confused

AllOverIt · 07/06/2012 13:13

Debating cancelling now. Kids gutted SadSadSad

hillbilly · 07/06/2012 13:18

EssieW - it has 3 camping areas. The top by the farmhouse is for caravans, then there's a field there too for tents (quiet after 9pm not sure about fires). Then there's the woodland field which is huge, allows campfires and is quiet after 10pm - that's where we camped. If you camp on the right you will get sun all day (if there is any!).

Loo and shower block is basic but clean and always had loo roll and handsoap. Power points for hairdryers, mobile charging etc if that's your desire. Token operated showers, 50p per token and 1 lasted me well enough and the water was variable from luke warm to hot but it did not bother me. 8/9 wash up sinks with hot and cold water. There was even a little cafe open in the mornings for breakfast if you want it.

Very relaxed feel to the site, and it was very clean. Farmhouse sell eggs, marshmallows and potatoes. And wood of course.

Am cheering self up by planning summer holiday camping, I'm taking the whole six weeks this year as I've finally got a reliable person to cover the dogwalking round. Faint Schadenfreude as I watch the rain dribble down the window panes.

Lilyloo · 07/06/2012 13:26

Flaming weather, sorry to hear those cancelling or cutting trips short.
I have to say though as the years go on I am becoming more of a fair weather camper. I can tolerate rain or wind, not together though and neither are fun.
We went last minute two weekends ago when it was boiling, was a great weekend with paddling pools and barbecues. We have decided to not book anything this year (other than deershed festival ) and follow the good weather. The downside to this being unable to get hook up, good sites being booked or not going at all if the weather doesn't change!

Slubberdegullion · 07/06/2012 13:39

We bailed yesterday afternoon after too many days of atrocious rain. BH Monday was lovely though. So glad we are now home as the rain continues to fall and the forecast for high winds over the next few days is terrible (Muriel). I reckon my storm tenten + deltas would be up to the job but not when I am sat inside feeling damp and sullen that my usually hot and sunny half term has been all spoilt by Her Majesty moving the whit holiday. It was sunny last week Brenda! sunny!

Roseformeplease · 07/06/2012 13:42

Caerlaverock. Still sunny here now! Few clouds coming in but the weather has been amazing!

caerlaverock · 07/06/2012 13:54

where are you rose? looks like nw scotland was the place to be this week

modelesque · 07/06/2012 14:53

Quick question - is it normal for the tent to get wet inside? One night of rain and there was a lot of water on the ceiling of the tent, not sure it was condensation as it wasn't there the other nights.

HomeEcoGnomist · 07/06/2012 15:22

Well I'm even more of wimp as we were in a cottage in east Devon and could not stand any more rain. Came home last night instead of sat morning. Holidaying in the UK is fine if you get good weather - all activities are assumed to be outside so you don't need anything else. But with young kids, and rain so hard we got wet through raincoats, it is just not fun. There's little that's more depressing than a deserted seaside town, shops shut on Bank Hol (!) and another 8 hours til bed time (Swanage, I mean you) Couldn't see a chuffing thing out of the windows of the steam train due to all the condensation.

Rubbish, disappointing holiday.
And not even that cheap!
It's knocked my previous worst holiday off the bottom spot - camping during the golden jubilee. I see a theme...

AllOverIt · 07/06/2012 16:20

We're going again now, though it's Swanage so now I'm worried Sad

Hulababy · 07/06/2012 18:18

dumbelina - we (me and DD, along with Katz and her two DDs) are off to the Wychwood festival tomorrow too. I don't really camp at the best of times - the rain is scaring me! Started a thread in chat but only me and Katz on it!

Lucycat · 07/06/2012 18:24

Slubber we also bailed yesterday - BH Monday was gorgeous - I burnt my nose but my that wind was cold, but the rest of the week has been grotty.

Took the tent down in the dry though which is a bonus Smile

roll on France!

MegBusset · 07/06/2012 18:26

Our tent is still packed and damp in the garage. Nowhere to erect and dry it except in the garden, so will have to wait for a dry day! Inner fly will need washing due to mildew anyway.

tyaca · 07/06/2012 18:39

lisa - are you safe at home yet? we weren't due to arrive at longthornes til Tues, but cancelled on Monday cause of weather. Am impressed at all of you who braved the elements.
