pancakes. there has got to be a sensible way of making them... using an old milk carton etc

i fancy pancakes for breakfast, it's got to be easy to do them while camping, i figure. or i could just buy one of the instant packs but they always seem so depressing.

I don't know what comes after 'old' in the title because I'm on the app so this might be totally irrelevant but in nigella express there is a recipe for pancake mix that you make up in advance then add milk and an egg to. It will make you feel more smug than depressed.

Kbear · 12/05/2012 12:23

getting the egg into the milk carton might be tricky.... how about buying a tall plastic container in Wilkos or somewhere, weigh out the flour and store it in it that then just add the milk and the egg and send the kids off - three laps round the campsite shaking it!! LOL

We just had pancakes for breakfast - love em!

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 12/05/2012 12:23

oh, that's what i'm looking for exactly. i don't have the book, though, but will look online. thanks!

do you think it would be difficult? i was assuming i'd crack it into a jug, whisk it a bit with a fork and then pour it into the carton. the bit about making the children run around the campsite is exactly what i'd anticipated... Wink

Jamie Oliver's breakfast pancakes are the easiest I've ever made - one cup of self raising flour, one cup of milk, one egg, whisk it all up, stir in a grated pear (or handful of blueberries etc). The batter is supposed to be quite thick, they are thick, fluffy pancakes.
Never tried cooking them whilst camping though!

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 12/05/2012 12:49

noted... that does sound easy.

a jug would be fine, or any plastic tall container with a lid.

1 egg, a cup of flour and a cup of milk.

do you use SR flour, Nanny ? We use plain, and always have - folow Jamie's recipe too.
(without the extra bits)

container with lid easier cos you can shake it about - otherwise just stir it with a spoon.

Kbear · 12/05/2012 12:54

they will be lumpy unless you shake it I think.

I don't get the pancake mix thing... it's milk, egg and flour. What's the "mix" bit you add the egg and milk to if not flour?

Northernlurker · 12/05/2012 12:56

Just looked up Nigella's recipe and it involves 15ml of melted butter. Would that be camping friendly?

600g of flour, 3 tablespoons of baking powder, 2 teaspoons of bicarb, 1 teaspoon of salt and 40g of sugar all mixed up.

For 150g of that you need 1 egg, 250 ml of milk and the butter as above. Mix all together then cook in pan (without oil)

Kbear · 12/05/2012 12:58

I think they are more American style pancakes - thicker. I'm a thin crispy British Pancake kinda girl!

LemonEmmaP · 12/05/2012 12:59

I've got one of those blender bottles - it's not huge so could be a camping accessory? If you went with the dry ingredients in the bottle, then add the extras and give it a shake, that could work

nettlemummy · 12/05/2012 13:22

I use a cappucino frother in a plastic jug to mix pancake mix when camping. I use the Tesco 6p mix cos you only need water and an egg then.

Blu · 12/05/2012 20:55

I've never used anything other than a bowl and a wooden spoon to mix pancake batter.

ChippyMinton · 12/05/2012 22:35

Re. melting the butter, I use Nigella's recipe (at home) and melt it in the frying pan before adding it to the mix. The pan is then hot, greased and ready to fry the pancakes.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/05/2012 22:43

Why would it be tricky to get the egg into the milk carton? Are we talking tetra pak here or plastic juggy type thing?

Because surely tetrapak pancake mix would be easy to do.

Kbear · 12/05/2012 22:53

I was thinking small plastic type carton - haven't seen milk in a tetrapak for years round these parts!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/05/2012 23:05

I suppose they are all bottles these days. I must be an arrogant posh boy GrinBlush

You've got to admit though, a tetrapak thing would be perfect for making pancake mix whilst camping. I'm amazed they never considered these things when phasing them out.

thenightsky · 12/05/2012 23:09

Years ago I had a fab thingy from tupperware... it was a tall plastic beaker with a tight fitting lid (pop on type) but also had a 'blade' that dropped in first.

DH killed it by boiling it in the dishwasher Sad

thenightsky · 12/05/2012 23:12

oooh...

found it

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/05/2012 23:28

Now that would be perfect! I may get one myself. Smile

Kbear · 13/05/2012 08:06

bargain

topbannana · 13/05/2012 09:43

Camping and pancakes on one thread, can a sunny Sunday get any better?! :o

marmiteandhoney · 13/05/2012 13:49

They often do that shakey shakey pancake mix on offer in the supermarket, and when they do we snap it up. I think it's just add water or it might be just add milk.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 13/05/2012 17:37

And is it nice? cos tbh that's what I was thinking of

OP posts:
LordFlasheart · 13/05/2012 18:29

We use the shakey shakey mix from supermarket. Its fine and v easy!
