We have a 2 ring gas stove to cook on.

I'm thinking of taking our slow cooker with us when we go camping for a week in June.

Please inspire me with some recipes!

chippy tea! Grin

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 08/05/2012 21:41

Pub lunch.
Pub dinner.

Ratbagcatbag · 08/05/2012 21:42

All of the above, plus cafe breakfast!! Although I can just about manage bacon butties when I'm camping!!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 08/05/2012 21:43

While I'm not opposed to buying takeaways or eating out we can't afford to do that for the whole week!

Ok being more serious, I tend to stick to soups, beans, spaghetti hoops etc for cooking on the stove, with lots of bread, I don't really do anything else, but normally only camp for long weekends so pub tea is normally order of the day!

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 08/05/2012 21:45

i make a tomato pasta sauce then freeze it so it's an iceblock for a while, then dinner. voila! my pal always does this with chilli and serves in nacho boat things, very popular.

Ratbagcatbag · 08/05/2012 21:47

Breakfasts range between boiled eggs and soldiers, beans on toast (we have a grill) bacon and egg sarnies (with mushrooms if wanted). Lunch is something as aboce (so spaghetti hoops etc). Tea I've done some lovely steaks in butter in a big frying pan, served with some boiled new potatoes and salad, disposable BBQ's are fab, burgers and sausages or grilled fish on it are all yummy!

Ignore them. They're just being mean Grin.

I do all our own cooking when we camp and it's bloody hard work .

Camping stew:
Fry a sliced onion and garlic in oil. Add sausages and fry gently till brown. Cut sausages into inch long chunks (frying them first means they stay together when cut). Add a tin of baked beans and one of tomatoes. Simmer whilst you cook some pasta, rice or cous cous.

If you are mad really commited, you can make some naan breads by mixing flour, salt, plain yoghurt and water, leave for an hour then shape and cook in a dry pan for about 4 minutes each side. They go nicely with the stew.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 08/05/2012 21:53

and don't discount pasta and pesto either. maybe with some green beans (chop and toss in same pot as pasta) and a can of tuna mixed in, if you're feeling flush.

amistillsexy · 08/05/2012 21:54

(I meant ignore the ones who said they eat out, obs).

Another favourite is Chilli - fry onions, garlic, chilli. Add mince and brown. Add tinned tomatoes and kidney beans. Simmer.

Serve with...Chopped lettuce; chopped tomato; chopped avocado with a squeeze of lime; sour cream; grated cheese; coriander sprinkled on top.

Eat with nachos/dorritos/tortillas (fry these in a dry pan for 1 min each side till they turn golden, but watch them-they burn easily!)

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 08/05/2012 21:54

That's more like it but the nan breads are a step too far! - thanks and please keep them coming!

We usually take the BBQ. Also make pasta, have pub lunches and take cereal etc for breakfasts and stuff to make sandwiches.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 08/05/2012 21:56

I think a small gas barbeque would help - I'm not good at cooking on charcoal!

Oooh, yes, Aitch,
Pasta salad:
Cook some shaped pasta and boil some eggs (separate pans!).
Add chopped tomatoes, cooked French beans, chopped cucumber, tin of tuna, eggs, and a healthy squirt of mayonnaise ( or try Lidl's own delish Remoulade- mayo with herbs- perks up anything!)

amistillsexy · 08/05/2012 22:01

I just asked DH what we cook when we camp...he answered 'Well, there's camping stew...and...erm...stew de camping ..and Ze stew of Ze camp '.
He's a bucketload of help, really! Grin

mamij · 08/05/2012 22:11

Risotto as an alternative to pasta. Fry some diced bacon and onions. Add a packet of ("instant") risotto and cook according to the packet. Add mushrooms when almost ready.

Macaroni and cheese is a fav with DD1 and it's quick and easy!

Stir fry (pre-packed) with noodles is also quick, easy and tasty!

Sausages with mashed potatoes and veggies.

Breakfast tends to be fried egg and beans with bread. Lunch tends to be sandwiches with ham, salad, olives, hummus, deli stuff mainly.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 08/05/2012 22:13

Pasta salad sounds great except that I don't like cucumber, ds1 doesn't like green beans and ds2 doesn't like tuna!! I'm sure I can find enough acceptable ingredients to come up with our own version though.

OP posts:
amistillsexy · 08/05/2012 22:23

Grin it is one of those 'chuck in whatever you like' things! It's easier to pick out a green bean than the tuna taste, though. When I'm feeling kind I make a tuna-free version for DS2. When I'm feeling mean he has to like it or lump it Grin.

OOH! I've just remembered bacon! Bacon is your camping frind!

Bacon hash:
Boil potaotoes (any type-not fussy!).
Fry an onion and some garlic (don't have a recipe that doesn't start like this!).
Cut bacon into pieces and fry along with onions.
Deglaze pan with a splash of wine and drink the rest.
Add potatoes and simmer in winey juices.
Serve with green salad (no cucumber) or green veg (no beans)!

amistillsexy · 08/05/2012 22:24

Bacon is, of course, your camping friend, not frind. I don't even know what a frind is Wink.

BountyCack · 08/05/2012 22:27

Tin of corned beef
Tin of baked beans
Put in same pot and stir
Serve with buttered bread (and about a pint of water each)

Yum yum!

scotlass · 08/05/2012 22:29

We always bbq on a small gas barbie when we're away camping.

Picnic stuff

Pasta and sauce

seeker · 08/05/2012 22:33

Panfried scallops and asparagus followed by roast lamb with new potatoes and braised vegetables. But that's because i have dp and you don't!

stargirl1701 · 08/05/2012 22:40

Love lots from the Cool Camping Cookbook. Have eaten and enjoyed:
Jerk chicken
Thai green curry
Lemon chicken tagine
Spicy sausage penne
Camper's cassoulet (with the goose fat!)
Baked berry apples

Delicious!

issyocean · 09/05/2012 07:30

Our favourites are baked sweet potatoes and baked apples stuffed with chocolate raisins (cooked in fire) and chilli served with salad and crusty bread.
