First thread so be gentle please!

The tent-addicts and campervan people have their own quiches; so I thought we caravan types might like a place to hang out too.

So far, DH, DS and I have been away 4 times this year in our Adria - we are trying to use it at least one weekend a month, on a cheap m cheerful sote where possible, with 2 longer breaks over the summer.

Come tell tales of central heating, an almost-proper bed, and inside toilets ;)

Shoshe Witches Craig is too close to me for comfort - just a few miles from home, so I havent stayed there but our in-laws did 2 years ago while they were dodging around Scotland in the summer and loved the site. Its really good for public transport links from either Stirling or Alloa, and theres a park and ride at Springkerse about 3 miles from the site if you dont feel like paying to park in Stirling town. Would agree with PurpleFrog and advise you not to drive into town if you don't absolutely need to - the one-way system is a bit "novel". . .and the signposting is a bit confusing.

Purple we are going to Millarochy Bay where we have tented before, and DBro was there a few weeks ago and gave it rave reviews. We've so far avoided the further up stretches of the eastern shores as the road has a tendency to turn into a car park the minute the sun comes out. Havent tried Lomond Shores yet as CCC sites are a bit cheaper skinflint tendencies here

I'm so looking forward to Wine on Saturday night and trying out my pound-shop bargain candle holders.

DH comes from Tullibody, so we will be visiting in laws (at least now with the caravan we dont have to stay with them Grin, so he knows the area well, although last time we were back, the road systems had changed a lot from when he went to school in Stirling.

Jins · 28/04/2012 13:53

I'll settle down over here with my tiny 12 year old Bailey 4 berth. We're in our third season now and have been away 4 times already this year. We even had a week in feb when there was snow on the ground.

We are Ex tenters - wouldn't entertain a tent ever again though. I've got the van just right and there's no going back Wink

Thinking about upgrading to a two berth Pegasus in a year or so.

CavemanDaveHasNeverBeenToWales · 28/04/2012 14:12

Funnily enough RubberDuck, the window cleaner has recommended Nodes Point this mornng which is IOW. Looks a bit full-on, entertainment-wise but he said its right on the beach .

DistantShip · 28/04/2012 14:24

Shoshe as a Tullibody child (of the 70s and 80s) - I will remain silent on the topic of in-laws Grin, and simply recommend the butcher in Tron Court for your caravan sausage, bacon and egg essentials. They are essentials in our van and apologies if you are vegetarian.

RubberDuck · 28/04/2012 14:34

Nodes looked great - but we left it a bit late and they don't have any availability for the weeks we can go, sadly :( That was my first choice. We did look at Whitecliff Bay but that was the one with the really bad facilities reviews.

Shoshe · 28/04/2012 14:55

Distant, you probably know my DH, he joined the army in 86 (OMG what if your related, will hasten to add INlaws very nice, just like own space!!!!)

Order already in at butchers, we fill the freezer every time we go to Scotland :)

DistantShip · 28/04/2012 15:22

Shoshe, probably would know him and I can assure you we are not related - I only have one DBro and I just happen to know where he is; yes you've guessed it Grin

OP posts:
Shoshe · 28/04/2012 15:26

aha will have to ask DH if he knows the butcher then :)

Shoshe · 28/04/2012 15:28

Justasked DH, and yes you would know my MIL Grin

QOD · 28/04/2012 15:55

We have 5 berth something or other, dinettes turn into beds at each end, dd has the smaller bedded end (which has a single bunk you can pull over too) because it has a slide across door/wall which is a god send as dh and I wake up early and she festers wakes later.

We've had one weekend this year, just us 3, bloody shower tappy thing failed and we flooded the. Bathroom cabinet every time we used the kitchen or sink. £99.50 only yesterday for a new tap and shower hose. Grrr
However, necessary for our trip next weekend to a CL with decidedly minging facilities, we're going with 2 other couples cos its cheap n cheerful.

We've booked our first alone sort of boggy, 5 days at the Centeniary Caravan Club site in the new forest in August. Friends have announced they are going to camp there while we're there :o they can't camp in our actual site as its vans only, but nearby and we are quite happy so we get a bit of company for Kevin the fecking miserable teenager.

QOD · 28/04/2012 15:56

Boggy? Holiday!!

Jaffacakeeater · 28/04/2012 16:11

Hello caravanners! We are proud owners of Elddis Crusader. It's a six berth with triple bunk for aged 3 (twins) and 1. Our first one and we love it! Such a relaxing escape from real life. Been away once this year to South Wales. Can't wait for next trip.

PurpleFrog · 28/04/2012 16:37

DistantShip - we have tried really hard not to drive through Stirling but have failed miserably. Blush I also discovered our AA road atlas had too many tourist symbols printed on the town and it was impossible to work out where the roads actually met each other!

Millarochy Bay looks nice - we went past it on our way up to Rowardennan one day. It was fairly quiet as we were there the week following Easter weekend. Good luck towing the caravan - especially if it is busy. I really wouldn't fancy the right hand bend with vertical steep slope leaving Balmaha!

DistantShip · 29/04/2012 17:45

Shoshe you're too sharp! DBro lives there and is not the butcher Grin

New caravan is ordered Grin Grin Grin
Yep another moment of madness Wink

hairyqueenofscots · 29/04/2012 21:42

hi, just bought a five berth caravan.
Its all new to me, anybody recommend any good sites in ayrshire?

Jins · 30/04/2012 12:22

The caravan club site in Ayr is great and really well located a short walk into town.

DistantShip · 01/05/2012 19:46

QOD hope your boggy holiday isn't a prophecy Grin

Hi Jins whats special about that site in Ayr - we are looking at that area for a weekend later in the year with 3.5yo DS?

We are all wondering what delightful shiny new caravan you have ordered in one of your manymoments c'mon spill the beans . . . .

Looking forward to Saturday when DH will be negotiating the sheep tracks to Millarochy Bay, as I'm relegated to navigator role. Been teaching DS to say it - tis quite a mouthful Wink

Off topic we have a hotel voucher (xmas gift) to be used up - any recommendations for a night for just DH and I in Scotland? We are too close to see the wood for the trees iyswim.

QOD · 01/05/2012 19:59

Oh I hope it's not boggy lol, I think we're gonna be out of luck though!

LeeCoakley · 01/05/2012 20:09

Oooh just booked Craigie Gardens for a week in August. Please don't say anything bad! Now just need a CL or similar for 2 nights before and 2 nights after because can't imagine DP driving from the South East in one day!

Jins · 01/05/2012 22:12

It's location is the best bit. Right in the middle of parkland but an easy walk to town. It's got a small playground and a decent shower block.

I just found it really chilled Grin

LeeCoakley · 02/05/2012 08:20

Good to know thanks.

Theas18 · 02/05/2012 08:32

Can I joint a caravan quiche??

I might not be allowed......

I have a Dandy folding camper (I know! i'ts not a van and it's not a tent! it's the best of worlds IMHO!). We have fixed beds, heating and and no leaks ever (it's made of lorry siding type PVC with insulation. the awning is not insulated though and rains condensation if the kids sleep in there so now they have a tent!).

I love it. DH tolerates.....

We mainly now use it to allow us to go to places and do courses etc that we couldn't possible do with 5 paying for "proper" accomodation!

DistantShip · 02/05/2012 20:00

Lol at Theas18. Yes we will allow hybrids to join the quiche Grin
