I've just remembered that despite fires not being allowed, the last time we went to Gillside there was a group having a massive campfire just yards from our tent Angry
They were drunk and a bit yobby and I was too scared to say anything and I was awake until two in the morning petrified that at best we'd get holes melted in our flysheet by sparks and at worst we'd all get burnt to death.

That's why I haven't gone back and probably wouldn't go again unless it was very off peak. It does get really crowded.

My favourite Lake District site at the moment is Rydal Hall, which does have one fireplace that can be booked (hope to do so when we go with friends later this year).

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 18/02/2012 22:34

rydal looks LOVELY. friends are a bit dense about religion though but hopefully it won't be too off-putting.

TunipTheVegemal · 18/02/2012 22:39

you don't notice the religion at all. DH said to say he's a full-on Dawkins-style class 7 atheist and it doesn't bother him.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 18/02/2012 23:47

excellent. that's precisely the reco they would need. it really looks perfect.

The group bits are quite rough n ready, which is why the site pictures don't really tell all. We hired the field for £450 for a week last year and 11 families came. The price would have been the same if there had only been 6 families, or if there had been more (I think). Worth a phone call if you're interested....

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 19/02/2012 00:22

see there's only three families so it's just not going to be worth it for us i think. shame.

i was very pro grizedale and rydal but both have been rejected on grounds of 'too far' ness. boo.
has anyone been here? www.hollinsfarmcampsite.co.uk/

OP posts:
roisin · 19/02/2012 15:12

Grizedale isn't far. The A590 is very quick these days.

TunipTheVegemal · 19/02/2012 16:29

but Hollins Farm is way further from the M6 Confused

BlackCatsAndPurpleDogs · 19/02/2012 17:38

Aitch can you update everyone on this thread wondering what happened to you Grin

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 19/02/2012 20:47

lol at it being further away... that's what i thought but you knwo what these things are like to organise with chums. now 'low wray' is being mentioned? near ambleside, apparently. looks really nice. and takes campervans (another confounding factor)

bouncysmiley · 19/02/2012 21:00

Rydall Hall....they have yurts too!

MrsMc82 · 19/02/2012 21:00

not been myself but A friend of mine with a vw camper adores low wray..... hth

TunipTheVegemal · 19/02/2012 21:01

we went to Low Wray last summer.
It's ok but tick-infested so I guess it depends what time of year you are going and whether it's tick season.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 19/02/2012 21:01

oh that's good.
i have rydal marked for myself, fear not.

OP posts:
AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 19/02/2012 21:02

TICK-INFESTED!!
wtf does that mean?!

OP posts:
AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 19/02/2012 21:02

that sounds A Lot Worse than midgies.

OP posts:
AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 19/02/2012 21:02

early june we are going. for the jubbly.

OP posts:
TunipTheVegemal · 19/02/2012 21:04

It means the children look very picturesque frolicking in the long grass but then you find ticks on them. And on yourself. And you have to get them out with a tick-removing gadget and dh is secretly delighted because you laughed at him for bringing the tick removing gadget.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 19/02/2012 22:00

is the jubbly during tick season? i am wholly unfamiliar with ticks? don't they give you lupus?

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 19/02/2012 22:10

Ticks give you Lyme Disease

I have no fear of ticks now because of The Death Socks

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 19/02/2012 22:13

that doesn't sound nice. what's lyme disease? and why do we not have ticks up here? do the midgies scare them off?

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 19/02/2012 22:19

It's not. Lyme disease. Yy you have them oop in Scotland. Trews tucked into socks (death or not) and you'll be fine. And tick tweezers as Tunip said.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 19/02/2012 22:19
OP posts:
TunipTheVegemal · 19/02/2012 22:22

you do. The special tick removers were bought for a trip to Scotland because that's where dh has had most of his experience of ticks.

Most campsites don't have them because they keep the grass short. I think it's because Low Wray is quite low-lying and damp, too.
