I am trying persuade DH that we need to take our girls to a family festival this year - Camp Bestival is out due to other family commitments so we thought we might try Just So/

i am far to tight to buy rolls just for the bbq (and we have alot of bbqs when the weather is nice) so i make bread dough in my kenwood
700g strong bread flour
2 (7g) packets of yeast
380ml warm water
0.5tsp salt
0.5tsp sugar
1-2 tbsp olive oil
wizz it up for 4-6mins on speed 1 or if i dont use the mixer i have to do it by hand (10mins) , then take the dough hook out and leave in bowl for 30 mins/1 hr to rise (it has a splash guard so keeps it nice and warm)
then i just make them into rolls or flat bread and pop on the bbq when the meat is almost done so the bbq isnt so hot.
i have just gone on a wheat/gluten free diet because i have been ill but i have yet to try gluten free bread on the bbq (it was ok in the oven so i am assuming it will be ok on the bbq), when the sun finally comes out again i will try it.
i love making bread, its just so easy and smells so yummy and the kids love warm buttered bread.

anyway now i am worrying i am taking too much happyholidays, have i gone OTT? i am really sad, i cant do anything big without loads of planning and i do tend to take everything i can think off so i dont wish i had something or need something when its to late. TBH i am not sure what we will need. my two girls will want to dress as fairies for the weekend so i am going to take bits for that so i dont have to spend a small fortune over the weekend on shops there. i am not sure what the boys will want to dress up as, pirates or peter pan.

No I don't think you're taking too much, I think I'm just amazingly under-prepared. I think taking your own food is fab. I did actually camp for 4 months when I was 21 but that was a while ago now.

I have:

A tent
A mattress
A pair of wellies (for me, none for DH or DD yet).

I love the idea of the bread and we hadn't planned to take food or snacks but now will. It also dawned on me that I will be 7 months pregnant not 6 when we go so having mild panic about being comfortable for 3 nights.

Got the email yesterday saying my tickets had been sent which was very exciting Grin

If I think of anything to add to your list I'll share it Smile

mel2005 · 09/07/2011 08:50

oooo.... i am off to check my e-mail.....soooo excited

mel2005 · 11/07/2011 12:29

i have just been looking at the latitude thread saying about windbreaks and i was just wondering how windy it is on the just so festival camping field? anyone who went last year, should i pack a windbreak to give a bit of protection to the front door of the tent?
not got an e-mail yet about tickets..

scaryt · 13/07/2011 00:59

Got my tickets today...so excited.

HappyHollydays · 13/07/2011 09:21

Ooh I wonder if mine have arrived.

Go Outdoors have a sale on this weekend so I'm going to browse for the essentials.

How do you all plan to get things from the car to the site? Our roll up mattress is going to be tricky...

mel2005 · 13/07/2011 09:27

my tickets came tuesday but i didnt have an e-mail.
i was thinking about a collapsable garden trolley, i could also use it to pull the twins around the site, we have one of those step2 twin wagons but i will not be able to fit it in the car, but then i thought i would just take the phil and teds, take it all to bits to fit it in the car. the twins will not really need it, i hadnt planned on taking it but it might be handy as a trolley if i can fit it in. also might be good to pop them in on the way back from the campfire because they will be tired then.

mel2005 · 13/07/2011 09:29

they are going to have some kind of off road vehicle to help with peoples bags and tents, i also saw they will have wheelbarrows available

mel2005 · 13/07/2011 09:33

might be a wait if you get there when its busy, i thought i would get DH and the kids to help we with the tent and pick a spot to camp then he could take them off to explore while i put it up because the twins take the pegs out faster than i can put them in and they would be running muck in and out before its up or worse running over the canvas with muddy feet so we have to spend the weekend looking at footprints above our heads. then when its up i can wonder back to the car and get the rest of the stuff without worrying about the kids and the cars in the car park.

I've just bought tickets for the Just So Festival. It will be both our first festival and our first time camping as a family!! Shock Not quite sure what I was thinking, but it looked so nifty we really wanted to go to the fest.

So what happens? I'm getting the idea from this thread and others that you have to register for events that happen? Is this the case? Or will we be able to wander around in our typical last-minute fashion and find things to do?

troutpout · 17/07/2011 13:43

Last year they had lots of young volunteers to help you carry stuff to your glade. They also had wheelbarrows. I believe there will be trailers you can put your stuff in and follow this year too.... ( not sure if I actually read that last bit on the website or just made it up )
I wouldnt bother with a windbreak either esp if you are in a glade. .... Glades
are Quite small and sheltered. Plus it's very open and friendly... Windbreaks kinda spoil it? ( but then I'm not a big fan of em anyway tbh)

mel2005 · 17/07/2011 16:29

I am in the field so a bit more exposed, had a look on the satelite image but couldnt decide how windy it might be, not sure we will have enough room in the car TBH unless i strap a child to the roof.
there is some info about transport from the car park now on their facebook page, it was something about people helping for donations to charity, some vehicles and solid tyre wheelbarrows.

scaryt · 17/07/2011 18:45

Those of you that went last year, what was the price of food onsite like. Just beginning to work out what I need to bring in terms of cooking/food and a lot of it will come down to how expensive it is.

Is anybody else camping in the field?

scaryt · 17/07/2011 18:46

Sorry, just noticed that you're in the field mel. Having never camped before Confused what do I need to be looking for in a pitch?

acsec · 17/07/2011 18:50

Looks lovely - too far away for me though :(

verybusyspider · 25/07/2011 22:25

just got email about camping Grin getting very excited - what kind of fancy dress is in order?

also need some advice from those who've been before - is it any good for a rumble truck/pull along wagon for getting the children around? like this www.gltc.co.uk/pws/ProductDetails.ice?ProductID=2539 (only a cheaper and borrowed one!)

KellyKettle · 26/07/2011 07:13

scaryt I've been told that food was reasonable but not given any examples.

I think we're going to do a combination of cooking for ourselves and eating on site.

I am looking at getting a kellykettle so DH can make me a cuppa in the morning Smile. We're going to take a bucket BBQ but I haven't thought of what we'll eat.

(name changed sorry - I was happyhols).

My camping pack arrived yesterday too but I haven't read it yet. Too small on my iPhone - I gave up!

KellyKettle · 26/07/2011 07:14

verybusyspider the truck looks like a good idea, if you can fit it in then I'd take it.

mel2005 · 26/07/2011 10:21

we have been looking at the kelly/storm kettle, it looks fab. it looks like they have porridge and bacon butties in the morning on site so i am hoping a coffee. i am gluten free so i will just take my usual rice cakes and loads of coissants/brioche rolls for the kids (DH will have a bacon butty when he gets the coffee).
it says you can have canopies, shelters and awnings if camping in the field but not in the glades which is great so i can really test my tent wing on my bell and as its probably going to rain the kids can welly/waterproof up there instead of the tent.
going to get some new sleeping bags today because i am worried about how cold it might be and i dont have room for all the blankets and duvets we have been putting on the readybeds for the kids.
i am wondering what to dress they boys as, the girls want to be fairies ALL weekend. peter pan?? pirates??

KellyKettle · 26/07/2011 10:39

Oh I am avoiding thinking about fancy dress. DD has a peppa pig costume with detachable fairy wings so I might take that. Or just get her some cheap fao=iry wings on elastic.

I found a handy recipe for fast just-add-boiling-water-porridge so I am going to take some of that ready made and just add hot water. We'll also take a cool box for milk etc.

I have no clear plans on the sleeping arrangements at the moment. DD is 2.7 and cosleeping and I am 27 weeks pg. I can't see an airbed being much good and I dread being cold. I am going to take a fleecy sheet though and try to find DD some fleecy pjs.

KellyKettle · 26/07/2011 12:41

Here's my porridge "recipe" stolen from another forum

Blitz porridge oats in a blender till it looks like "ready brek"

Put 4 tbsp in a food flask with 2 tbsp skimmed milk powder and 1 tbsp of brown sugar. You can add boiling water to this to get the consistency you want and costs pennies to make.

I plan to take some in a sealed tub for easy, warm breakfast.

mel2005 · 26/07/2011 14:24

thats a great idea, i will have to try it for the kids, we have quite a few food flasks we use for soup.

mel2005 · 26/07/2011 14:24

we are going to have to get a storm kettle now

verybusyspider · 26/07/2011 20:48

mel - I have 3 boys so generally try and avoid fancy dress that makes them want to tear arse round or hit each other - for the time being I've band pirates, I'm thinking of accessory fancy dress rather than full on costumes - ds2 (3yrs) does want fairy wings and I did spot some cute animal head bands, the kind with ears on (mine are just 5yrs, 3 and 2) maybe native american headbands... peter pan hat... maybe just facepaints

now off to google this kettle you are excited about!

mel2005 · 26/07/2011 22:56

now i am wondering if the other children there will be costumes for the discos its 50 and 60s on friday, 70s on saturday and 80s on sunday. might just let them go in either a party dress/shirt and trousers or what they are already wearing. i am not sure i have the energy to make up some disco costumes. i have ordered some glow sticks but TBH mine will probably be in bed by the time it gets dark.
