here

Open the shiny saucepan.

Remove gubbins

The legs go in click click click click

The gas cylinder goes in. Turn and click.

Turn knob. Press knob. Click and whoooooooooooomszsvsvsvsvsvsvsvsv [gas burning noise]

Put handle into saucepan click

And away you go.

The saucepan lid can actually click down onto the pan and is has little sieve holes in so you can drain away freely and casually with one hand and quaff wine with the other.

So big old stove is OUT. stove legs are OUT. Massive gas bottle that is a bastard to pack OUT. Natty bag of multiple self stacking saucepans OUT. Sieve is so out it is not true.

Nantcol waterfalls near shell island is fab.

The clicks in rl are even better.

Slubber - your handy cooking gizmo there - how heavy is it? I mean I can see from the link how heavy it is but could it do carless camping do you reckon cos thats how hardcore we are. Though we're not so hardcore that the lack of morning tea isnt beginning to get us down. Grin

SlubberOnlyInATentCapacity · 28/06/2011 18:17

har for a moment there thought you had written careless camping, was thinking wtf is she going to be sitting on it by accident?

OK carless camping. mm tricky. It's not an itty bit of kit. it probably weighs as much as mm maybe an obese guinea pig, or a moderate rock or two mallets, small mallets.

If you are back packing then I would look at those jet boils, they are AWESOME, or look at the stoves by go-system uk or MSR. Much lighter, smaller and more powerful....you'll still need a saucepan though.

scaryt · 28/06/2011 18:19

ooh yes, does the gas canister fit in the saucepan or does that have to be carried separately? (This would detract from the natty bijou-ness of it slightly Wink ) How much do they come in at? Could you use the same canister for a light? Or are there better ways of getting evening light (without EHU?)

SlubberOnlyInATentCapacity · 28/06/2011 18:20

It would fit in the bottom of a proper ruck sack, but i wouldn't want to carry it up Moel Famau.

SlubberOnlyInATentCapacity · 28/06/2011 18:25

No gas canniser doesn't fit in saucepan. It takes 3 different sizes of camping gaz cannister iirc, the smallest being handbag sized.

yes you can fit a lamp to the cannister thus

We have a pre charge/wind up lantern. Won't use gas in the tent.

scaryt · 28/06/2011 18:39

Thanks for that.

Yes, see your point, gas in the tent...not good. Was trying to be streamlined!

scaryt · 28/06/2011 18:42

Nantcol Waterfalls looks fab, just what I'm after.

Now just to persuade that lovely DH of mine it won't be a daft waste of money.

SlubberOnlyInATentCapacity · 28/06/2011 18:44

oh no. If you get the weather is the most wonderful thing to do ever. You will be filled with joy. there will be even More Joy with the clicky legs

SlubberOnlyInATentCapacity · 28/06/2011 18:45

can stream line with head torches. they are vv serious minimalist

scaryt · 28/06/2011 18:51

Hmmm I've never been referred to as a vv serious minialist! You never know, it could happen.

I'm loving the idea of joy and More Joy with those clicky legs Grin how could he possibly NOT be convinced.

Now to stop the boy building a dry stone wall so I can put him to bed. Now camping with dry stone walling (for a 5 year old), that would be perfect.

SlubberOnlyInATentCapacity · 28/06/2011 19:00

dry stone walls a plenty at Eskdale campsite in the lakes. there is Much Joy there also (and v nice beer and sausages in the shop fridge)

scaryt · 28/06/2011 20:55

Not even considered the lakes, that's opening up a whole new world.

I keep gazing at the bivouac kit online, tis sad.

SlubberOnlyInATentCapacity · 29/06/2011 15:03

No not sad.

Sometimes decisions such as these need to be taken slowly with much thought and quiet contemplation.

[soft and faintest echo of the click click click]

scaryt · 29/06/2011 15:41

I've been ill today and the contemplation time (when not sleeping) has been immense.

So much so I have now seen this Eldorado, when I was getting ready to get the cheapest (but still sensible) tent I could.

SlubberOnlyInATentCapacity · 29/06/2011 18:13

What a pretty pyramid. Do it DO IT. We can be in the Pyramid club and taunt the bell enders.

scaryt · 29/06/2011 18:22

So, so tempting Slubber. There is something lovely about the canvas and the pyramid design. But there is a voice at the back of my head saying "But you've never been camping before and your lovely husband already thinks you've lost the plot." Need to work on convincing arguments. I'm assuming you own a lovely pyramid then?

Can just see the sleek Cobb, and petite bivouac sitting just outside the door....[wistfully dreams]

But really, does the living space at the front look too small for those days/evenings it pees it down? Or is it totally fine as we won't be spending huge stretches of time in it?

SlubberOnlyInATentCapacity · 29/06/2011 18:34

You've never been camping at all? Ever? Not even with the Guides?

SlubberOnlyInATentCapacity · 29/06/2011 18:34

I do own a beauteous pyramid but will hold back on the sales pitch.

scaryt · 29/06/2011 18:38

Um, OK...I wasn't in the guides but I did do Duke of Edinburgh, I camped a couple of weekends as a child and once as a teenager. Now we mainly have the caravan. But I do want to do some weekend camping with the small one and it always helps to do things stylishly!!!

Go on, hit me with the sales pitch. I'm confined to my bed and need things to dream about!

SlubberOnlyInATentCapacity · 29/06/2011 18:45

Ok phew. Was worried about you buying all this stuff and then turning out to be one of those weirdo freaks that doesn't like camping.

OK pyramid. 20 mis to put up. Storm tent so won't blow over. Smells nice. Sounds nice. Quiet in the wind. Cooler in teh heat, warmer in the cold. looks cool. Standyuppy bit at the front where it opens out (unlike bells). All round fabulous and that is a GREAT price for a canvas tent.

Sorry to hear you are poorly.

scaryt · 29/06/2011 18:56

It all sounds good. The canvas does have a lot going for it. Still worried about that space at the front, but need to let go and think 'it's camping'.

I'm one of those people that does a lot of research before finally plumping for something. We've pitched the caravan at Ashbourne in South Derbyshire and will spend most of the summer holidays there, hence the desire to do the odd 2/3 night jaunts around North Wales using the caravan as a base. So all equipment needs to be fairly compact and fit in my fairly small car.

I do like the look of the quechua base seconds 4.2 (I can feel your shudder from here!) and the whole it can be up quickly thing. I also like the fact it looks a little different to the norm. Hence liking the look of the Eldorado. I'm thinking that will last longer though and be an all round better tent than the quechua.

Which pyramid have you got?

SlubberOnlyInATentCapacity · 29/06/2011 19:14

We have a Cabanon Guadeloupe.

Oh I hate to do this, to piss on your canvas ardour but small this tent isn't. Well mine isn't. 22kg is only 2 kg lighter than ours.it takes up at least a third of our fairly big estate boot.

The Quechua is great. Love pop up tents and have two myself. I would deffo recommend although you need to check they will fit in your boot at although flat are quite a big round flat things.

scaryt · 29/06/2011 20:24

The Guadeloupe looks loverly. I really like the shape of the Pyramids, particularly when taut!

All being well, going on a tent hunt tomorrow to Decathlon and Go outdoors just to see what's out there.

But I really do like the look of the Eldorado. I read somewhere that it packs up to 1m long 38cm wide. So I'll see what that looks like in the flesh.

Will also measure my puma's boot.

SlubberOnlyInATentCapacity · 29/06/2011 21:01

Good luck with your hunt. Always best to see them in the flesh.

I'm with you, love the shape of pyramids but the main downside of canvas is weight and pack size.
