The Hairy Bikers seem to do ok with their Cobb oven! I'd love one, but can't justify the cost.

I would also like to know!
We are going camping in a couple of weeks with our sparkly new bell tent and dutch oven.
We spent quite a bit of time researching which cooking option to go for but never once did we read/hear anything about cadac or cobb ovens.............. (largely because at the time I was having a MN break!)

So given that MN is full of people that love both the options we overlooked Im feeling slightly nervous that we went for the wrong thing!

Lovecat · 21/05/2011 09:54

I would love a Cobb, but DH would murder me if I bought one... so we're taking this away with us as a cheapy camping bbq option while I save for the Cobb. Apparently you can stick it on a table/grass/the beach and it won't burn the underneath, so we are roadtesting it this coming weekend.

Ok, you can't cook an entire roast dinner in it, but for weekends away it will do until I can justify a Cobb to DH....

Slubberdegullion · 21/05/2011 10:40

I think they are worth it. They are pretty versatile so you can use them very much like a standard bbq/grill and fry all your sausages and burgers on them (although you won't get a smoky flavour as the fat doesn't drop down onto the coals/cobblestone).

You can also roast stuff in them. Can't remember how many times I did roast chicken in mine last year (a lot) but it comes out lovely and moist. You can also wrap veg/spuds in foil and put them in the moat and then get roast veg, jacket spuds etc.

i also have the wok saucepan thing which is the biggest cooking receptacle I take away with me. perfect for big stews, curries etc.

Have yet to do anything fancy schmancy like bread or cakes, but will be attempting a pavlova at some point with which to enter the mn cobb off.

We use the cobblestones, pricey but you can start cooking on them almost immediately and they will give you a good 3 hours cooking time, perfect if you are doing a lot of sausages on the beach or want to cook a main course and then a hot pudding.

It comes in a natty carry case and isn't very heavy so deffo can take it down to the beach.

Everything Slubber said but there is no way I am whisking egg whites for a pavlova by hand. I may however try a cake of some sort. The wok thing in particular get more use than anything else. Its perfect for paella or risotto, noodles stir fries and other quick stuff.

I don't use the stones because of cost and stick to charcoal briquettes and half a fire lighter. Easier to light than the stones as well.

HonestyBox · 21/05/2011 22:41

This is something that you have in addition to some gas burners right? You don't boil a kettle on this?

Quenelle · 22/05/2011 06:55

I wondered the same HonestyBox

Do you heat your baked beans etc on it?

Posted twice. Damn BlackBerry

Slubberdegullion · 22/05/2011 09:48

yy we have a gas burner too for boiling water/ kettle on.

When the Cobb is going it is going and save pouring water on it it will keep going until it burns itself out. Not a quick on and off job.

You mooch with a Cobb. If the Cobb came with a soundtrack this would be it. Sparkly jacket optional.

Slubberdegullion · 22/05/2011 09:53

OH FGS

Just ignore the stupid joke. It was only Lionel Ritchie anyway

Excuse me while I get this shitting link right

Slubberdegullion · 22/05/2011 09:54
Slubberdegullion · 22/05/2011 09:57

Ok good there he is.

Sorry, link fail was NOT a good metaphor for how easy a Cobb is.

ChippyMinton · 22/05/2011 10:20

Here you go, Slubbers.

DS1 entered a Cubs camp cooking competition and came 3rd, so he is in charge of holiday grub now...on the Cadac obviously.

Slubberdegullion · 22/05/2011 10:46

Thanks Chippy mate
[weakSmile]

I knew someone would come along and mention the cadac. I have not the strength or mental capacity to rise to it this morning.

ChippyMinton · 22/05/2011 11:15

I feel mean now, giving with one hand, taking away with the other.

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2011 11:22

i have one of these

it's very transportable, has a burner and a barbeque, and Doesn't Use One Of Those Terrifying Gas Bomb Things.

Slubberdegullion · 22/05/2011 16:47

That looks good Aitch, and very unexplodable.

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2011 17:45

thank you, your benediction means a great deal to me. Grin [seriously]

MisSalLaneous · 22/05/2011 18:14

Warning: I have no manners.

Laura, will you please do a thread re dutch oven brilliance (or otherwise!) after your camp? Dh would of course kill me, but hey, we all have to go some way or another.

As you were. :)

MilaMae · 22/05/2011 18:23

Right whilst you're all here, can anybody tell me which bits I must have. Is just the Cobb enough or are other bits essential if so which? Is the recipe book any good?

TIA
