Why are people scared of camping?

I'm off tomorrow. I am sooo excited. But if I mention it to some people I get the "ooh, I've always wondered about camping but..." But what?! Am I missing something!? What are people so frightened of? I know that camping has risen in popularity recently probably due to the recession but there still seems to be a bunch of people who would rather do nothing but spend their money on day trips to theme parks all summer rather than go chilling and camping. Is the showers? Would they like to be in a posh hotel or nothing? Very strange! Can anyone clarify? They don't know what they're missing!

That's another disadvantage. If you drink wine to blunt the edges of the misery you then have to get up several extra times for a wee. And then don't have a quick supply of water to drink so end up with hangover.

Am off camping tomorrow and can't wait. Only three nights but book, wine and good company is enticing.

expatinscotland · 31/07/2010 21:39

This is probably why I always used to smoke weed whilst camping, back in the day, rather than drink.

Hungover, no sleep, desperate for a pee and no ready water.

Light bleeding through the damn tent at stupid o'clock so kids up and running about, demanding things.

Shared toilets and showers.

Idiot, inconsiderate people all around.

I'd rather stay home, tbh.

LadyBiscuit · 31/07/2010 21:55

I've never had to queue for showers. The sites I go to have lovely portaloos about 30 secs walk from the tent. Okay if it's pissing down, that isn't that much fun but if it's pissing down you wee in a bucket in the tent.

I like being close to nature, to being woken by birds and going to sleep when it gets dark. I like the Ray Mears aspect of it. And kids absolutely love camping and their excitement is an added bonus.

There is something about doing battle with the elements which is really fun (if a bit bonkers).

I can't explain it really

I find weeing behind the car at 3am saves the trudge to the loo block

BeenBeta · 01/08/2010 18:06

Once went camping with DW when we were students. The fact we are still together owes much to the fact we never went again.

expatinscotland · 01/08/2010 20:30

Amen, Beta. That was brave of you.

The glamping thing looks a little better, but that no shower thing.

And the no real walls thing.

I think I'd rather go for the caravan in October, tbh.

About £200/week. Another £80 for food. £120 for spending and diesel. Job done.

DH was of the I hate camping and like weeks in Vegas ilk

Then he actually tried it

Now he is an addict!

We're middling with gadgets: small fridge but don't always book EHU (usually don't), stick to sites with decent toilets (even baths at the last one!), have a Cobb and burner for cooking and spend evenings in restaurants if raining which is hardly penance

muggleWump- Quechua basecamp pop up my dear, would suit you a tee

SanctiMoanyArse · 01/08/2010 20:43

I even know a site where you can hire a private bathrroom close to the pitch I undestand (never bohterred meself)- broadway House in Cheddar

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 01/08/2010 20:50

my dh has always been reluctant camper so i have to book sites v carefully with loo awards and a bath to use and no noisy club house attraction that would attract rowdys. This morning when we awoke in our tent before coming home he actually suggested we stayed another night - i think i have finally cracked him! woo hoo! We came home though as we had both ran out of clean under crackers

For me camping was what I did when I was young - bownies, guides, music festivals
when it was just me I had to worry about and prekids I didn't need to pee in the night
going with the kids now doesn't sound any fun at all
I'd probably cope with one night

Cabatach · 01/08/2010 23:12

I think camping makes you appreciate your own house more when you return!

hmc · 01/08/2010 23:15

I camp - under duress because the children enjoy it...and yes, I am more at home in a 5 star hotel (which mercifully the children quite enjoy too).

Camping isn't really a holiday - it's a bit like self catering in a cottage "same shit, different place" except without a dishwasher.

expatinscotland · 02/08/2010 08:55

A week in Vegas sounds FAB!

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 02/08/2010 09:02

My dc were so excited about washing up outside they did it all (age 3 and 7) they also were obsessed with filling the water bottle. But yes coming home yesterday to a carpet and a dishwasher and just flicking on the kettle - bliss!

SanctiMoanyArse · 02/08/2010 11:22

xp it does (we had it booked for homney, moon but changed it as I had been so ill with DS1 and we thought a cruise would be better, and I never made it there yet) but I like camping too

If it's not freezing cold and I have winre, family and decent food I can like most anything mind

bronze · 02/08/2010 11:31

Did you have fun Nikki? We were there a couple of weeks back. The works nextdoor had an alarm that kept going off in th emiddle of the night, sounded like my alarm clock if I don't turn it off.
