Why are people scared of camping?

I'm off tomorrow. I am sooo excited. But if I mention it to some people I get the "ooh, I've always wondered about camping but..." But what?! Am I missing something!? What are people so frightened of? I know that camping has risen in popularity recently probably due to the recession but there still seems to be a bunch of people who would rather do nothing but spend their money on day trips to theme parks all summer rather than go chilling and camping. Is the showers? Would they like to be in a posh hotel or nothing? Very strange! Can anyone clarify? They don't know what they're missing!

Right now I love it as weather has been fab, last night when I was still awake at two am I hated it and a strange noise convinced me we were under alien invasion but today has been a joy but if I do not sleep tonight or dh we may eBay the lot lol. Sorry about lack of punctuation I can't find any on this phone .

ReasonableDoubt · 31/07/2010 18:24

glamping is camping for soft Londoners like me

ponceydog · 31/07/2010 18:27

But what is it, accomodation-wise? A static caravan?

expatinscotland · 31/07/2010 18:29

They can keep all the good pitches. Yuk. No, thanks.

ReasonableDoubt · 31/07/2010 18:30

The place I went had permanently erected tents, really big, with a little loo and proper beds. You still had to trudge through a field to get to the shower block, and spend hours trying to get the camp cooker thingie hot enough to boil a bloody kettle, so it was 'real' enough for me.

LynetteScavo · 31/07/2010 18:36

In this country, I'm scared of the weather. I have childhood memories of long miserable weeks in Wales camping in the rain.

Then I had no choice, now I do.

I also don't want to erect a tent [lazy]. If someone else will put up the tent, and guarantee hot, dry weather, then I might think about it. Then of course there is the cooking/washing up to be done (haven't seen a tent with a dishwasher yet)and the showers....I don't want to know about other people brushing their teeth- yuk yuk yuk!

I know exactly what I'm missing, thank you, as almost every holiday I had until I was 15 included camping (apart form the year my mum forgot the tent poles and we had to stay in a youth hostel YAY!)

It's not posh hotel or nothing, and I'm not particularly fond of theme parks, but buying a tent isn't hight on my list of priorities right now.

LilRedWG · 31/07/2010 18:42

Of course, if you camp in Kenya you get people returning to the hotel after only one night because the animal noises in the night scare them. I totally agree with the guides - the lions won't eat you, they can't open zips.

Camping in this country is great, but we are fair weather campers and would never stay for a week of rain because, "We've booked it and paid for it, so we'll endure it!".

But it's not that much chaper than a static caravan, which will have it's own loo, shower, sink and TV.

I live in Oregon and camping here is really popular. However where we live the campsites are all at around 5000ft and while it doesn't rain for the 3 month summer season, it is so cold at night. We went for 4th July weekend and it was -1 or-2 overnight and I didn't get a wink of sleep! Need to get another sleeping bag.

expatinscotland · 31/07/2010 19:00

I don't care how cheap it is. Brushing my teeth metres from someone doing a pongy shite just doesn't do it for me.

If I can't afford the caravan, we don't go.

notyummy · 31/07/2010 19:06

Hmm, camping in this country - the weather, the lack of my own shower and toilet.

Camping abroad - no air con, and the lack of my own shower and toilet.

Happy to do it occasionally as I know kids love it - but it is not a realy holiday to me. If it was all I could afford, then I would probably do it rather than not go away at all - but at the moment I can afford other options. DH is entirely in agreement with me.

I may be biased because having spent years in the military, I spent quite a lot of time in tents, and all this 'roughing it is FUN' malarkey cuts absolutely NO ice with me.

Csmping can be fantastic! Relaxed, easy-going, peaceful, beautifil locations.

Sadly however it is more often than not cold, damp and uncomfortable and bloody hard work!

I loathe the idea of a static caravan. They scare me. It's £6 a night where we're camping so £42 for the week (my DS is free). I have a lovely bed, portable DVD player, dongle. Lovely

notyummy · 31/07/2010 19:40

toilet and shower ladybiscuit?

And if its one of those grim portable toilets that you have to empty, then it doesnt count!!

notyummy · 31/07/2010 19:41

5 minute walk in the rain to have a pee at 4am.

That sentence sums up the whole problem to me.

OrmRenewed · 31/07/2010 19:42

Yes notyummy - I think you are right.

Goober · 31/07/2010 19:43

I like to shower in private and not have to que for showers.

I like to have a comy place to sit if it rains or turns cold.

I like to NOT have to wear wellys all day long.

I like to not hear my neighbour snoring/shagging/kid crying/dog barking in the night.

I DON'T LIKE CAMPING.
