I use Yazio but I’m not in the UK. The database is very international and I sometimes have my daily log in four different languages.

safetyzone · 05/02/2024 15:02

If you don't mind subscribing (it does have a free trial), and you're tracking macros as well, I highly recommend Macrofactor. It calculates your TDEE based on the food you eat (if you track honestly) and the weight you want to lose, and it adjusts your calorie intake each week from that data and your progress - so if your weight loss slows down it adjusts the calories downward. It's much more intelligent than any other tracker, the food database is not as good but it's really easy to create new foods.

gettingfitinmenopause · 06/02/2024 08:14

I have just restarted using mfp after using fatsecret and I like it. The only thing I don't like is you have to pay to use the bar scanner. It does what I need it to do, and that is track my calories and exercise.

It been a real eye opener for me that working from home I am so sedentary, so it has motivated me to keep going to the gym 5 times a week.

FrontBoom · 08/02/2024 19:04

I recently found the "Calories - AI Photo Nutrition" app for iOS. You just snap a photo of your meal, and the app provides all the nutritional info you need to keep on track. It's great!

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 16/03/2024 09:40

Nutracheck has a nice interface but do they tell you things others than macros, ie how much fibre, vit c, iron and so on you're getting? If so I can't find it, it's the only thing MFP is better at.

everycowandagain · 16/03/2024 11:42

Fibre you can track, yes. You can customise your diary view to add up to 4 things so I have cals, protein, carbs and fibre.

Vitamins/iron etc I don't think you can.

I must admit that while I use nutracheck for all my food, I do still track weight in mfp because you can see your history over a longer (and customisable) time period whereas in nutracheck it only shows you the last 7 weigh ins.

Seawren · 24/03/2024 12:58

Hi I’m a calorie counting newbie, age 60+. For any of these trackers, what’s the best way to log home made meals and portions, eg a pot of own recipe soup that I eat over a few days? And to jump onto the same question is there a better app for home made things?

everycowandagain · 25/03/2024 21:35

@Seawren either find something in the database that's very similar, lor log it as individual items (half a pepper, a quarter of an onion etc) or create a meal with all the ingredients and log your portion ie 1/5 of the entire recipe (or set how many servings the entire thing makes).

In nutracheck I have the things we eat regularly logged in 'my meals' and you set how many portions it makes.

MsFogi · 27/03/2024 10:16

When everyone says 'Nutracheck' here does that mean Calorie Counter + on the App store?

Seawren · 27/03/2024 12:38

@everycowandagain that was really useful thank you! I’m starting to get the hang of it. Portion size is my main downfall.

everycowandagain · 27/03/2024 14:20

@MsFogi yes that's the one

everycowandagain · 27/03/2024 14:22

@Seawren it's all about portion size. I eat largely the same food whether I am trying to lose weight, stay the same or get heavier (ie add muscle), I just tweak portion sizes and vary the proportions to fit my goals.

Veggielove84 · 10/04/2024 10:58

Another nutracheck user here lol

gem71 · 16/04/2024 11:17

Nutra check die hard here. Totally worth it; so much easier to use than my fitness pal, which I had used religiously for 4 years before switching due to pricing. Didn't have hopes but wow- def recommend nutra check

mum2flossie · 22/04/2024 09:28

Nutra check is a lot better imo and I'm pretty sure it's cheaper for the full version too?

Mynewnameis · 28/04/2024 19:15

Can nutracheck users tell me if you get it to sync with a fitbit? Myfitness pal does which is useful. But the app isn't as good so I end up using all 3 apps.

Yes you can, but it just brings the total across not breakfast/lunch/dinner.

And sends your steps, exercise and weight over to Nutracheck.

I've been using it on and off for 3 years, I find it so much easier to use than MFP and happily pay the subscription. Plus if they do special offers, you can take advantage even if you've still got months left and the extra time gets added on.

soupfiend · 28/04/2024 19:47

I use MFP because Ive used it for years and I have a lot of recipes saved which I wouldnt know how to transfer without typing the whole lot out

However, I do have my gripes, so much of the information must have been entered by blind people, how they have managed to get the information wrong so badly I do not know

Things not coming up in the search when they are clearly there

When you add in something in a recipe, you cant then remove it, without saving the recipe and going back into it to edit, this is a major nuisance if like me I cook most of my own foods becuase when you're picking something for a recipe, lets say Asda coconut milk, I cannot tell you how many of those people that literally cant read a nutritonal label have entered 247 versions of Asda coconut milk and THEY ARE ALL WRONG, but MFP wont show you the nutritional information of that while you are loading it into a recipe, that functionality doesnt work (only works when you're looking at just logging it for a meal for the day).

I also cant bear that lots of items come up as 'per serving'. I measure everything per 100g or 100ml, even barcodes come up like that but I think thats because manufacturers do it per serving and that is annoying and inaccurate.

So for those who do use another calculator, how is the functionality with 100g measures and putting in recipes?

soupfiend · 28/04/2024 19:49

Oh and another of my gripes about MFP is that the phone and the laptop dont sync that well, I use my phone during the day to keep track, particularly of liquids otherwise I forget and when I get home it doesnt load it properly and often the phone app measures revert back to an earlier amount and forget the amounts Ive added, that is annoying

However Ive never seen any adverts, either on the phone or laptop, I dont payt for it.

Mynewnameis · 28/04/2024 19:51

Thank you @WhatsitWiggle .
Mine doesn't seem to pull the data over. Will have to investigate as the app looks so much better

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 28/04/2024 19:55

MFP is what I use because I've used it for years, but it's definitely nowhere near as good as it used to be - frequent foods I use will suddenly disappear, which is really irritating. I hate how many inaccurate food entries there are on there.

oh I thought that was just me.

On my laptop, the list of my foods only goes back 4 pages, so I have re search for something if its older than that, very annoying, particularly for things which have lots of wrong entries

The phone has a mind of its own, I have it set to most recent but currently the top foods are those that were used about a year ago, I know this becuase we went on holiday and bought some M&S foods that we dont normally buy and there they are at the top of the phone list of foods. Its bizarre.

I've had mine set up for years, but you might have to link it in both apps - so permission in nutracheck and fitbit. It's a common question in the nutracheck forum!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 28/04/2024 20:07

I was about to start cc and downloaded last week. I cook most of our meals from scratch and use leftovers for lunch etc. I rarely weigh things as I cook, so I just can’t figure out how on earth to get started.

Likewise we ate out last night, I have no idea how I would put those things in the app.

Am I missing something really obvious?!

ts8789 · 28/04/2024 20:11

Another vote for Nutracheck. There is a free version but you can only add I think 5 items per day and you can't use some of the features.
I did the first week free trial, then a week with the free version, then paid for a full year.
