GandTfortea · 12/04/2022 09:17

Or have things got to bad and I need a gastric sleeve or band .
It feels such a mountain to climb
I worked out the weight I want to be ..12 stone
And worked out a 12 stone woman needs 1700 calories to maintain her weight .
So if I eat 1700 calories I will eventually get to 12 stone ?..

Simplistically, yes.
Moving more will help, but that will just be for any average woman, genetics, metabolism, age etc will all play a part.
I have around 13 stone to lose Blush
I don't want surgery, I've not given up on doing it the old fashioned way yet.
I have started reading a book called "overcoming Weight problems" to try and change my mindset and learn ways to stop eating so much.
Good luck

Yes, pretty much! You could probably start on higher, maybe 1800 or 2000 and still lose as you are big. Try and keep active as then you won't need to cut down so much as you lose. If you have good will power Micheal Mosely's fast 800 is supposed to be v good for quick weight loss, and safe. Good luck!

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 12/04/2022 10:52

You dont want to lose too quickly as that can be dangerous so go and see your GP to discuss diet. Ask for a referral for a dietician.

You want to do this safely and effectively. it isnt just about the calories. The macronutrients matter. You need to be getting the right things so you dont become malnourished.

bigbluebus · 12/04/2022 11:29

Yes it is. I know someone who has done it but she has also very much changed her lifestyle too (lots of exercise).
DS knows someone who lost 10 stone and has put it all back on. That is the tricky bit. You need to address the reasons why you put on the weight in the first place and change that permanently otherwise you will regain the weight (and more!)

tackling · 12/04/2022 11:32

Yes of course, but it'll just take a long time to do it safely and sustainably. A good few years.

On the plus side as you get going you'll probably see benefits and feel more enthused about it!

So I found out today ,I can’t have gastric surgery due to the past bulimia.i feel crushed ,it was my last hope of ..well if I really can’t do this I can have surgery. I don’t understand why bulimia stops this surgery as they cut away most of your stomach anyway .

I think you need to adjust to a really slow and steady approach: a few pounds a week at most, no more.

Given your eating disorder history, and what's happened with past diets, I wonder if you should avoid thinking about calories and instead focus on the type of food you eat, and do more exercise? And think of it as a permanent lifestyle change, like a medication you have to take for life from now on.

For example, my approach was to "just" cut out processed food and sauces and so on. Once you've done that you find that you have to eat healthy whole foods (like fruit, veg, fish, chicken and eggs). It's fairly hard to overeat vegetables.

I also started regular cardio and weightlifting. I've lost and kept off the weight and more importantly I'm physically and mentally healthy and happier. I honestly don't miss the old diet, it doesn't satisfy me or taste as good as it used to when I do try it!

I am sure a healthier life could be achievable for you too. Please don't despair Thanks

Have a look at this book, and way of eating. I lost 4 stone following these principles - no calorie/carb-counting involved, but you do have to be prepared to change the type of foods you eat, for good.

A relation has just lost 5 stone in a year doing SW. She eats absolutely loads. Very determined and I know it gets slated a lot on here but it's worked for her. She sees it as a life long commitment which helps.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/04/2022 17:33

Obviously if she goes back to eating as she did then she will gain again.

Twizbe · 13/04/2022 17:39

Try Noom.

I've been doing it for a while and along with your calorie counting there is lots of learning about why you eat the way you do. It's focused on long term change not just weight loss.

I've also done slimming world successfully in the past (pregnancy led to weight gain again rather than just eating shit)

If you do Noom you can do the trial for £1. I then tried to cancel it and they reduced the price dramatically to keep me

MrsWooster · 13/04/2022 17:39

Don’t aim to lose 10 stone, aim to eat a bit better and exercise/move a bit more and lose a few pounds. Then just a few more…. 10 stone (or 4, or 5…) is too overwhelming a task in my experience so keep it small and steady.
Against lots of advice, I weighed myself everyday and recorded it on MFP and saw that a clear pattern develops over a couple of months-with definite ups as well as downs but the OVERALL trend was gently down and this gave hope on the days when nothing seemed to have an effect.
Every pound you lose is healthier, every time you have one biscuit, not three, is a way of caring for yourself and this self care mindset takes a long time to embed and replace the existing treat /punish mindset.

bigbluebus · 13/04/2022 19:29

If you're on Facebook, look up Rebelfit. In the last couple of days he's put up some posts explaining Set Point weight. Might help you understand why diets don't work and why you put weight back on after you have dieted.

motherofawhirlwind · 17/04/2022 19:03

I bloody hope so, because I need to do the same! Want to buddy up?

OhFatty · 09/07/2022 10:14

Dinogirl50 · 21/07/2022 16:52

Dinogirl50 · 21/07/2022 16:53

AngelicInnocent · 27/07/2022 19:56

Plenty of people on here who are losing steadily by calorie counting.

Use a tdee calculator (free on Google) to work out your base calorie requirement and then aim for 500 less per day.

Use something like the fitness pal app to keep track.

If you stick to it, it works

Katieeb24 · 23/08/2022 19:26

Yes, it’s possible. I lost 8 stone this way. I have put 2 and half back on though! Need to get back into it, I’m just finding it really hard this time around.

Webbedlife · 27/08/2022 12:22

I yoyoed by 5st twice with Weightwatchers over many years. More recently in the last couple of years, after a sudden Covid related weight loss I decided I would try again, but in stages of 5-10%, with periods of time on maintenance in between (as the NHS recommends).

I'm over 2st lighter than i was 2 years ago and have maintained for over a year, with some ups and downs but no prolonged regain. I think that's because my mindset was different- if i have to count forever, I am OK with that because the alternative isn't worth it. I am still overweight, but no longer obese and blood pressure is better, have less pain exercising etc. There are of course other ways of losing weight but I'm used to this and it's no real hassle. I have had trouble motivating myself to get back to another weight loss phase, but am getting there now.

So consider doing it in stages. Any weight loss, if you keep it off, will be better for you.

scaredoff · 14/02/2023 00:20

It really sounds like your problem is your psychological relationship with food, not the technicalities of calorie deficits etc.

I'd be looking into some kind of therapy. And in conjunction with that, a dietary plan with a modest calories deficit that is realistically worked out, according to your preferences, pleasures, lifestyle etc, so you can stick to it FOREVER. Rather than a "diet" for a limited period of time.

tackling · 14/02/2023 08:17

@scaredoff this post is a really old one, how did you find it
