Calorie-counting

Noom but putting ON weight

Saysaysaythree · 12/02/2022 10:42

I’ve been doing Noom since I put on a stone over lockdown and friends have had good results with it.
I’m 5’5 and now weigh 64kg, usually I am 58kg. I can’t fit into most of my old clothes, I know I’m not overweight but this is bigger than I am comfortable being, and the biggest I have been in 15 years.

I’ve been limiting my calories to even less than Noom allows, around 1000 per day. I have a very active job on my feet all day. Every day the scales are just inching up. I’m 36.

This is getting me down and I don’t really understand what I’m doing wrong. Maybe fasting days? It’s just crazy to me as I am so active anyway and calorie intake is tiny.

😢

You’re not eating enough!!

If you pay for Noom, use it. It works but you have to follow it and not make your own rules.

Saysaysaythree · 12/02/2022 12:20

I am using it. And I’m following the rules which are calorie deficit.

Not eating enough is nonsense.

I've used noom and thought it was bollocks tbh.

The only thing I've ever in my life succeeded to lose weight with is putting everything into mfp or the Fitbit app, and actually measuring portion sizes.

You could be putting into it 1 serving of pasta/cereal/rice, but unless you're measuring it you could be having the equivalent of 3 servings.

Weigh your food, make sure meals are 1/3 protein and 1/3 veg, and keep tracking it. Including drinks like tea, coffee, juice, alcohol.

I didn't used to realise that I could be adding 700 calories a day in lattes and orange juice, but I was.

Measure everything, record it, and stay in a deficit.

A580Hojas · 12/02/2022 13:02

Hmm. Gaining weight on 1000 calories a day sounds very odd.

Ask your GP for a blood test to check your thyroid out.

ElleGB · 12/02/2022 14:27

No it isn’t. 1000 calories a day is not enough. I didn’t say that would be why the OP is gaining weight because of course it isn’t, but 1000 calories a day is not enough to fuel your body correctly.

Apologies if my original post sounded snippy OP, I just read it back - I was rushing out the door and it wasn’t intentional. You’ve increased your deficit by more than Noom advises which is why I said to follow it exactly and see if it works for you.

Gardeningdream · 12/02/2022 14:31

Please ignore rhe advice to eat more, it’s silly and you’ll gain more

Can you detail exactly what you’re eating and drinking, including any treats of a weekend? The only reasonable explanation is you are consuming more over an average week than you think.

PurpleDaisies · 12/02/2022 14:38

How long have you been doing it? I often need a week or two of following a healthy eating plan before seeing changes on the scales.

I agree with others that only eating 1000 calories a day isn’t enough.

Saysaysaythree · 12/02/2022 15:07

I’ve only been doing it for around 10 days. I know I need to be patient, but when weighing myself every morning it’s really demoralising to see the scales creeping up each day when I feel like I’m logging and thinking about weight loss all day.

Thank you for your advice. I will give it more time and really think about portion size and measuring out. It’s really helped me to realise that I don’t eat as much fruit and veg as I thought I did.

My weight does fluctuate hugely with my period. But I’ve been cycling 10 miles two or three times a week too so I just feel like I’m doing as much as I can! But it’s a learning process.

Thanks for your insights and advice 😊

I'm 5'5 and weigh about 64kg and I'm also trying to lose weight.

There's no way I would eat as little as 1000 calories daily as well as exercise.

1400 is a very small deficit for me and on days I exercise I usually eat a bit more. Not loads, but something like a banana or a muesli bar so it would take me over 1400 before exercise.

Everyone is different, but I wouldn't restrict myself to 1000 calories on a regular basis. Some days I'm not that hungry so I might come in about that but I wouldn't aim for it

Grandville · 12/02/2022 17:53

10 days is nothing. Hormonal fluctuations, water retention and digestion changes can account for weight changes by up to 5lbs or sometimes more.

I once was regularly dropping 2.5lb a week and weighed myself to find I'd gained a pound. I was outraged but later went for a massive poo and the next day was down 5lb! I also regularly gain 3lb or so before a period so I'll gain or maintain for a couple of weeks then 'suddenly' lose 6lb.

You are much better off tracking average weight loss over a month or more as a woman. Track it on a line chart if that suits you and you'll see small ups and downs but an overall downward trend.

Zampa · 12/02/2022 17:56

I’ve been cycling 10 miles two or three times a week too

I don't think 10 days is long enough to judge but could you be building muscle from the additional exercise?

gingerhills · 12/02/2022 17:58

10 days is too soon. Hormones, time of day of weighing, mild inflammation after sport can all cause weight gain/water retention.

I'd eat more - 1,200-1,400 so you can sustain it. 1,400 with plenty of exercise should see results.

IME Nothing at all happens for two weeks, then a pound comes off, then it's almost as though my body catches up and goes, 'Oh shit are we on a diet? OK,' and the weight starts rolling off.

TibetanTerrah · 12/02/2022 17:59

1000 calories a day is not enough to fuel your body correctly.

Ffs so then her body will use its fat stores for fuel!

Op its unlikely you're really only eating 1000 calories a day unfortunately. Its so easy to miscount.

AntennaReborn · 12/02/2022 18:03

Not being goady, I don't know how Noom works and how the plan is set out, but how do you know you're eating 1000 cal if you're not measuring your food?

And yes 1000 would be extremely low for most people, but it is very individual and you would really need to work out your TDEE to know how many calories constitute a deficit for you.

Ok yes you’re right I do apologise.

1000 calories a day on top of an active job and cycling three times a week is perfectly healthy!
UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 12/02/2022 19:01

Give it time. If you have only been doing 10 days it's not enough to say if it's working or not.

Cyberworrier · 12/02/2022 19:04

What are you eating differently to normal? If you've actually put weight on since starting Noom?

SchoolFraud · 12/02/2022 19:08

Also doing Noom, about 3 weeks in.
Lost then put on around my period and now losing again. Could you cycle be affecting you?

Grandville · 12/02/2022 19:18

No you need to be in a calorie surplus and training hard to build additional muscle. However, when you start exercising harder than usual, your muscles get damaged slightly and heal back stronger - this is why you feel sore after a workout and it's a good thing. When your muscles do this, they retain some more water than usual and this can account for a small amount of weight on the scales. It'll go when your body gets more used to the exercise.
Ribenery · 12/02/2022 19:18

I'm a bit older than you but it always takes me 6 weeks on any diet to lose weight properly

Are there vitamins, fibre and all the other things your body needs in body fat? No? Then she needs food.
LemonSwan · 12/02/2022 19:24

No idea what Noom is but do the cracker test and check your mouth enzymes for whether your body needs carbs or not.

I am high in the enzymes so I need to eat a lot of carbs; when I dont I pile on weight.

thekingfisher · 12/02/2022 19:27

I'm doing Noom and it really is slow and steady. Follow the guidance measure honestly and accurately and focus on whole foods fruit and veg. It's really helped me reset some relationships with my food. I'm 6 weeks in and have lost 5lbs without any real feeling of a diet plus exercise 3-5 times a week (might be ½ hr work out or a long fog walk depending on the day).
Stick with it and be patient !
