Low cal but satisfying snacks

Probably been done many times but can't see a recent thread and I am sure this is relevant for lots of people at the moment.

I've been really good at not snacking during the lockdowns but with the rain/snow am spending more time in front of the TV - and wanting snacks.

I try to have dips with carrot sticks, or fruit, but it doesn't stop me craving cheese/crisps/cakes/biscuits/crumpets etc. I've managed to resist buying them but I'd like some healthy but satisfying snacks I can enjoy without feeling guilty. (By satisfying, I mean really enjoy not just a 'well it's healthy but a bit shit' kind of snack. )

Le pain des fleur crackers are quite tasty and very low calorie, and you could have them with hummus or a very thin butter or low fat cream cheese. I quite enjoy them - they look like ryvita but taste much nicer.

Also Nairns do some nice oatcakes in flavours like ginger, berry, chocolate. 1-2 biscuits still come in less than a hobnob or something.

Homemade popcorn without butter/sugar/salt, or only a tiny bit of sugar sprinkled on.

If you like hot chocolate you might like cocoa - but don't add sugar (or if too bitter at first reduce the sugar in it bit by bit until there is no sugar). Obviously the milk (semi skimmed) still has calories, but it's fairly low-cal, quite filling, and satisfies the chocolate craving. Hot chocolate now tastes horribly sweet to me.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 10/02/2021 17:35

Thank you @WeirdlyOdd - exactly the kind of thing I am after.

I don't take sugar in any hot drinks so tend not to have hot chocolate but cocoa might satisfy a chocolate craving.
Thanks again

Miso soup is only 21 calories a cup. I get the Itsu sachets from Tesco. If you have a rice cake with it, that's only another 20 calories and I actually find it very satisfying...both in a filling me up sense and also "I've had a tasty snack" sense Grin

Rice cakes with Marmite on can also do when you're craving something crunchy and salty. Kallo does loads of flavoured rice cakes. The beetroot ones are absolutely lush, and at 40 cal a cake, would make a low calorie snack if I could stop at one or two Blush

I agree that those Nairns biscuits are lovely, especially the chocolate ones.

WeirdlyOdd · 10/02/2021 17:40

The Nairn chocolate biscuits are especially nice I think if you let them go slightly soft by leaving packet open a few days - makes them feel more chocolatey and like a 'proper' biscuit.

AprilThe8th · 10/02/2021 17:40

Propercorn popcorn.44 cal per bag

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 10/02/2021 17:40

@IToldYouIWasFreaky I've not had marmite for years but do like it so will definitely try that with rice cakes. Soup is a great idea - never had miso so will give it a go.
Thank you

A teaspoon of Marigold stock powder dissolved in a mug of hot water is tasty and filling. It is very savoury and really seems to cut through my sweet tooth cravings.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 10/02/2021 17:45

@Chottie we often used to have an Oxo crumbled into water when we were kids with bread broken into it - I suspect when food had run out at the end of the week. Another one worth trying, thanks

There's actually marmite flavoured rice cakes which are nice and I like them with cottage cheese
Low cal ice lollies like mini milk, loads available that are under 100 cals
Greek yoghurt and fruit
Popcorn with Nando's peri salt
Boiled eggs
10 cal jelly with berries and mini meringue
Cup a soup

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 10/02/2021 17:55

Brilliant @QueenPaw thank you, all things I would consider satisfying! So many good ideas from you all

Oh yes, Claudi and Fin frozen yoghurts are lovely and really low calorie - they're for kids but have a nice subtle flavour and don't have all the extra sugar that most frozen yoghurts have.

GintyMcGinty · 10/02/2021 18:04

Yogurts
Cup a soup
Oatcakes
Tin of sweetcorn

chichi19 · 10/02/2021 18:10

Fab Lollies are a low calorie sweet treat

Minnie16889 · 10/02/2021 21:20

I love rice cakes with a small ammount of peanut butter
Or apple and a little peanut butter

Tesco do low calorie salted popcorn, i divide the packet into 3 food bags (so i dont end up eating the entire packet Grin )

2 ingredient pancakes are my absolute favourite - 1 banana and 2 eggs. Mash the banana with the eggs, a little fry light in the frying pan. I normally top with a drizzle of honey and strawberries

As you can see I have a little sweet tooth Blush Grin

Natsel84 · 10/02/2021 21:25

I dry chick peas in the air fryer, for 5 mins , take them out , spray with fry light, add nandos peri salt and some garlic granules then roast for 20 mins .

UnderCaffeinated · 10/02/2021 21:50

Depends on your definition of low cal, but I absolutely adore the kitkat hazelnut spread, it's 107 calories and it's amazing, so indulgent and tasty and fits within my calories for the day. Love them!

I also 'treat' myself to pink lady apples, they're just SO much nicer than other apples I actually really really enjoy them.

jelly79 · 10/02/2021 22:26

Skinny whip bars are my go to now!!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 11/02/2021 07:44

Fantastic, thank you all. I second Pink Lady apples, definitely feels like a treat.

I have the following snacks -

Propercorn lightly salted
Boiled eggs
Soreen Apple lunchbox loaf
Clementines
Grapes
Raspberries (only 1 cal a raspberry!)
Quorn scotch eggs
Babybel

livingthegoodlife · 12/02/2021 12:24

If you use MFP there is a recipe on there for black bean chocolate brownies. They are 137kcal each but they are proper gooey chocolate brownies. I make these and then the whole family can join in and no-one is left out.

Also
Boiled egg chopped up
Apple
Muller light layer yoghurt

I try to stick to one snack a day.

jackieweaverhasauthorityhere · 16/02/2021 09:38

I find things that take longer to eat or have 'resistance' satisfy me more, say, celery and light houmous rather than a cracker or cucumber. A lot of low cal food is very light textured.

Light babybel are 42 cals and will head off a cheese craving.

Zero fat yogurt with cacao and berries is my go-to, chocolate and sweet fix without added sugar. If you use frozen berries straight from the freezer, it's like ice cream, takes longer to eat so more satisfying (admittedly nicer in summer!). Depending on the portion it can fit in as a snack if your meals aren't too heavy.

I also sometimes bake the yogurt with fruit on top (berries or tinned mandarins). It makes quite a dense cheesecakey pudding that I find quite filling and nice.

Sugar free jelly is very low cal.

FedNlanders · 04/03/2021 08:03

10cal jelly
Muller light
Boiled egg
Options hot choc
Snackajack
Pom bear

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 09/03/2021 22:48

Great thank you. Some of these are exactly what I was after. Seem naught but actually aren't
