Noom

I've seen something called Noom mentioned in a few social media places and wonder what it's like.

I read on the website they focus on the psychology of why we eat.

Does anyone have any experience with it?

AmIAWeed · 19/01/2021 07:42

I started 2 weeks ago.
I've mixed feelings - I'm not yet in a 'group' so only have what feels like a chat bot coach.
For me, the push notifications to log meals is perfect, and the little 'tasks' distract me when I want to eat.
I like seeing the calories and checking a meal or adapting it to make it fit my count. I like the breakdown of red, yellow and green foods.
After my 2 week trial the full 3 month subscription came out of my account - no reminder for that!! I think had I had a months trial I'd have probably quit and started logging meals with my fitness Pal instead once I'd got in the habit but I have lost 2lbs and entering my third week

MooseBerry · 19/01/2021 08:23

Ha! I was about to start a thread on Noom. I'm in the two week period you get for about £15 (I'm sure there might be cheaper ones!) but I quite like the log of calories, meals, snacks etc. The different coloured foods give you something to think about but doing 1200 a day is quite difficult if you want a treat. I think Noom tries to teach you, however, that you can "slip up" and then just get straight back on it the next day or to make better choices for the rest of that day. I have combined it with a more relaxed 16:8 and doing 14:10. So basically I only eat between 8-6. It seems to work for me. I have lost 5lbs since the 9 January. You so weigh yourself every day at the same time and I think that helps too. It's nice to see the weight come off the scales each morning when I get up. If you try it, good luck!

UsernameFail · 21/01/2021 18:52

Hi, sorry for delay coming back to this thread.

It's a bit naughty to remind you the two week trial is over so thanks for the heads up with that.

1200 calories is not a lot. Are you able to adjust that amount?

OP posts:
Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 21/01/2021 18:57

I started at New Year and have lost half a stone. I've got a lot to lose.

The 1200 limit is the same for everybody. However the attitude isn't all or nothing, if you go over one day just crack on next day. It's definitely changing my attitude to eating..

I've been interacting with my group which is nice.

MooseBerry · 21/01/2021 19:23

@Wrongsideofhistorymyarse when do you get a group? Is this through the app?

I'm not sure if you can adjust the amount. I assumed it calculated on your age, sex, weight, and type of activity level (I'm fairly sedentary) but maybe not?

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 22/01/2021 00:50

Hi Moose through the app. I think it was day 16 or so.

Jigglemonster · 29/01/2021 10:22

I've been doing Noom since September and have lost just over 10.5kg. I really like it, found it better once I got assigned a coach and a group. I have to say though that I ignore their calorie suggestion, I think on the slowest weight loss setting it gives me 1400 calories which isn't sustainable for me.

I started by giving myself 2200 calories a day (was breastfeeding full time), now moved to 2000 (breastfeeding less) and the weight is still coming off slowly but consistently. I have another 12kg to lose and may need to reduce my calories further at some stage but is working well for now.

I didn't change any settings to change the calories, I just aim for 2000 a day now, which you can see in the counter and told my coach that I was aiming for higher.

UsernameFail · 29/01/2021 13:35

Thanks @Jigglemonster that's very helpful to know as 1200 calories for me is not sustainable.

How do you feel about weighing yourself daily?

OP posts:
Jigglemonster · 29/01/2021 17:49

Initially I wasn't keen, any other programme I had tried (Slimming world, WW etc.) had all said not to obsess about the scales and not to weigh daily. But what I have found is that it has almost de-sensitised me to 'the weigh in'. It's now a habit and I don't get stressed when I see that it's higher than the previous day because I know that there are so many factors affecting weight and that my overall trend is downwards. With SW I used to skip weeks if I had been 'bad' because I was worried about weighing in. But now, when I choose to have a less healthy meal (e.g. every Friday night I have a takeaway) I don't mind weighing myself the next day, in fact it's interesting how weight fluctuates and how water retention makes such a difference to the numbers.

UsernameFail · 30/01/2021 07:54

That's makes sense @Jigglemonster . I too have done SW and like you would skip weeks if I felt I'd been bad so can understand the process of daily weighs to desensitise the process.

What are the coach and groups like?

OP posts:
Jigglemonster · 30/01/2021 21:04

The coach is good considering the cost, they check in every week and can answer questions or give you ideas when you're struggling to stay on track. Most useful in my view is the automatic notifications and text message you get when you don't log in/log meals etc. for a certain number of days (the trigger is chosen by you, mine is if I don't open the app for 3 days in a row). This has really made me veer back in the right direction several times, ending a run of bad days!

The group I in is good, it depends on what you're looking for. I post occasionally and often reply to other people's posts whether they are looking for advice or recommending something that worked for them. The same dozen or so of us post/reply semi-regularly but I find again, it helps me stay on track and get back into it when I fall off the wagon.

Some people use the recipes section, I have barely looked at it because I get Gousto and have lots of favourite low calorie meal websites already but it's another thing to get access to.

Its not cheap for an app (I didn't even do the cancel thing to see if I got a discount) but given the amount I've spent on WW/SW and lots of clothes in bigger sizes I figure if it helps me lose the weight and change my eating habits then it's worth it.

theonlywayisup33 · 09/02/2021 15:58

Is it worth paying upon enrolement £39 for the coach and meal plan bundle?

tobee · 10/02/2021 00:41

Anyone doing Noom with thyroid issues?

Akire · 10/02/2021 00:51

I tried for two weeks paid £5 was suggested £15. But you could choose your price. I found it irritating written in some young cool language which got very boring after awhile. Lots of (ha ha we thought you like that) !!! (Only kidding) Noom-tastic!!! x20 times a page.

Lessons blasted you with information and new names for things Frog, Grazer and random other names and lots of quizzes. Which I could never get all right.

When set up it asked if you had any physical limitations and when I said Yes, asked me no further questions. But keeps asking me log 2000 steps a day when I’m a wheelchair user Grin

It gave no suggestion what the yellow foods wear supposed to be and nothing I logged counted as yellow. Even though supposed to be a third of my meals.

I might have tried longer but it was two weeks to cancel or pay for the whole year. So cut my loses.

UsernameFail · 11/02/2021 22:32

I signed up.

I'm unsure whether the coach & meal bundle is worth £39 - what they've sent meal wise is fine. Ish.
I a don't know if there is a list on the standard sign up of what makes up green yellow or red food or whether you only get the list by signing up the bundle.

I haven't looked at the exercise section properly to comment.

These always take me a few weeks to get my head round

OP posts:
UsernameFail · 11/02/2021 22:37

I have to agree with you @Akire the hipster speak is annoying! I find it makes me skim the pages.

I also think that the standard 1200 calories is unrealistic and unsustainable. Everyone is different and there should be a way of changing that amount. I'm trying to stick to 1500 which by my level of food enjoyment is still low

I will be interested to see what happens when they assign a coach and group

OP posts:
Chucklebum · 14/02/2021 12:41

Hi @Akire are you saying that if you don’t pull out after the initial 2 weeks, you are stuck paying for an entire year? Also, I read in Choice Magazine that they do not publish their prices because they base their costs on what the applicant puts down in the information in the sign up. So charging people different rates. Does anyone know if this is true?

GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 15/02/2021 19:55

@Chucklebum - look under Your Account on the app. It will give you an option to Manage Subscription and from there you can work out whether you want to cancel or continue. The options I get are 2 month/4 month/6 month subscription. I had been put on the 2 mo subscription which was more than the 4 months!! So I swapped. It’s £59 for 4 months for me. I will see what happens at the end of that....

Akire · 15/02/2021 19:59

Yes it said on sign up you had to tell them you were leaving in the two weeks or else they carried on charging. Was easy to do I must admit that’s something.

Marylou2 · 25/02/2021 10:33

I've signed up to the two week trial and I think I'll definitely proceed to the next 6 months for £99. Not too pleased by the lack of transparent pricing but I like the app.
The meal logger is easy to use and it's definitely brought it home to me how much I've been stuffing down without thinking for so many years. I need to lose 60lbs and this could be the jolt I need. Tubby, lazy and menopausal sums me up! Not sure if I'll interact with my group when I get one. Hoping they might have a similar amount to lose and not be trying to drop the last half stone. Nothing wrong with that of course but I might find it demoralising Smile

Nanniss · 26/02/2021 11:55

I've just signed up for this and will proceed for 2 months in the first instance to see if it works for me. I quite like the meal logger - I'm going to try and stick to 1200 calories Monday to Friday and will see how the weekends go! If I lose 10kg in that 2 months I'll be very happy.

SimplyGrateful · 27/02/2021 12:55

I’ve just signed up for the two weeks. I’ve joined on-line groups before and have not got anywhere at all. However, I have already list a little bit of weight so feel quite motivated at the moment. If it keeps nudging me, that might work.

Good luck to everyone trying to shift some weight.

PaddingtonsHat · 07/03/2021 17:04

I’ve been doing this for three weeks and am actually losing weight. This is notable because I never stick to anything for three weeks, and I find it hard to lose weight and keep losing. I am a convert and will keep going

Calyx72 · 13/03/2021 09:59

I am doing Noom too. Signed up for 2 weeks for a pound, lost 2lbs to my surprise (maybe just the weighing daily and logging my food and snacks and drinks)
£69 came off my account last week and I now have a group. I am suspicious that each person's profile pic looks professional ConfusedGrin

I decided not to have Prosecco last night instead I had gin and light tonic (was on a zoom with my bridesmaids to be!) and instead of being up 2lb this morning I was DOWN a lb!

Calyx72 · 13/03/2021 10:02

Also was cooking a sausage and slice of haggis for my breakfast as we like cooked on Saturday, checked the roll's calories and it was 200 and a 'red' food so didn't have it, had a poached egg instead for 80 cals and all are 'yellow' foods. I feel pleased!
