Noom

I've seen something called Noom mentioned in a few social media places and wonder what it's like.

I read on the website they focus on the psychology of why we eat.

Does anyone have any experience with it?

I’ve just signed up to this today. I’ve 3 stone exactly to lose.

I’ve done SW in the past and lost weight but stopped going and put it all back on over 2 years. I felt there wasn’t much asking “why” about the eating and my group was full of people who had lost and put back on. I actually felt it gave me a bit of a complex about food that I hadn’t had before (such as avoiding group if I thought I might have gained) but I expect all that is for another thread entirely!

so I’m hoping Noom will make me look more at my behaviour and assess the when and why rather than just the what I eat. Big expectations for an app I know! I haven’t signed up any of the meal plans as I’ve found those restrictive in the past. The quizzes I took suggest I could lose the weight by September which would be absolutely wonderful.

Those of you who have been doing it for a couple of months or more - how are you finding it?

@Skythrill I've been doing Noom for a month now and I've lost 13lbs. It's really made me confront some shocking realities about portion size and snacking. I think I was eating 3000+ calories a day without even noticing. For example pouring double the amount of cereal and milk I needed and normalising huge portions of carbs/rice/potatoes without thinking. I think it's given me accountability via food logging and reading my articles every day. I'm perplexed at their marketing though. The whole "it cost as much as a pair of shoes" for 4-6 months is just weird. It's about £100. Don't know why they don't say so. Or say it's the cost of a takeaway pizza or 2 bottles of wine every month. In reality you won't be having these things ,or far fewer, if you're taking it seriously so it's cost neutral. I actually think it's saving me moneySmile

Skythrill · 23/03/2021 16:22

@Marylou2 thank you for replying to this thread and congratulations on your weight loss, that’s a significant amount of weight you have already lost!

I haven’t really seen any of their marketing but I think there was a show on ITV last year and it worked out, £pound for (lb) pound that noom was the most economic “diet” on the market.
I’m only on day 2 so haven’t got much experience of the app yet but so far with logging the food it has made me consider everything I’m eating and has made me evaluate some of my choices but it’s not much of a reduction in food or portion size so I’m not confident that the weight will come off as quickly as the app had initially predicted. I expect (fear) that I’m going to have to do more exercise...

It does seem a very gentle introduction and the in built pedometer is a great feature.

I personally find it shit. It’s basically an expensive version of a portion plate and a fitbit. Do 10k and fill half your plate with green veg and you have noom.
Skythrill · 23/03/2021 17:01

@GrumpyHoonMain I’ll bear that in mind.

MsBeliever · 31/03/2021 21:09

I have been on Noom on and off for the past year and a half I have found their approach really helpful, as it does make you look at the psychology behind your eating habits. I find the colour coding easy to work with. I lost a stone which was what I needed and have kept it off for the last year. I now just use the free version which doesn't include any coaching and articles, but keeps the food and exercise tracker.

ingeborg3 · 03/04/2021 00:01

I am also on Noom for the past two months. I lost 10 pounds. I move very little, due to sciatica. I am trying to stay at or slightly more than 5000 steps. I am eating around 1300 calories daily, sometimes more during weekend. Thanks

Viviennemary · 05/04/2021 17:20

I answered the questions then was very unimpressed when they asked for a donation. Big sneaky I thought so didn't bother.

MrsChicken89 · 05/04/2021 21:14

I've just signed up to see what it's about. I paid £8 for the 2 week trial, you can chose between £1-£15.
Then its charging me £127 for 8 months, but its billed in 1 go, no option to pay in smaller sums, so I'll see how these 2 weeks go. There's an option to pay for 12 months too, so it works out at £15 a month.

I was drawn in on the fact it works out why you eat, rather than focusing on whats good/bad food.

Viviennemary · 05/04/2021 21:30

I won't hand over a lump sum. Why don't they let you pay monthly. Sounds a bit of a con. I'm going to give it a miss. I've already had three e-mails today.

ingeborg3 · 07/04/2021 18:27

I am paying every month, about $45. I bought the Noom app through the App Store of my iPhone. I can stop anytime.

Astrabees · 10/04/2021 16:06

I started on 3 February and so far I've lost 23lb. I didn't want to weigh every day but I do and it certainly keeps you on track. 1200 calories is more than enough for me and I can make 3 good filling meals within the limit. You can criticise it but it does not cost that much per week (I'm saving loads on food ) and it really works. The mental exercises and psychology are so helpful.

LittleDoritt · 11/04/2021 13:13

I've just signed up for the two week trial. Then it will be £127 for eight months. I wish it gave a monthly option, that seems a very intimidating price for something that might not work. Interesting to hear everyone's opinions so far.

FoxgloveBee · 12/04/2021 20:07

I am two weeks in and I love Noom so far! I've lost 6lb.

I am sticking to the suggested calories (they give you half back for any exercise you do so my usual calorie amount is about 1400 and I don't eat them all.

If you want to change your plan, type "cancel" into the chat and follow the steps to get the option of a monthly payment.

LittleDoritt · 13/04/2021 21:10

Thanks for that @FoxgloveBee. I had a look in Settings as someone upthread suggested but I only had the option for 8 months or a year. I'll wait until my trial is almost finish and then press cancel. I'm liking it so far, although I am way over my calories every day.

FoxgloveBee · 13/04/2021 21:15

@LittleDoritt it's not in settings, even though you'd think it would be! If you message the chat robot thing at the top, just say "Cancel" and eventually you get an option to pay monthly. I got myself stuck on the four month plan so looked it up on Reddit!

@SisterJude can you not press the "easy units"/ "other units" at the bottom right of the food item?

Here's what it shows for me:-

Noom
tobee · 20/08/2021 20:55

And this when it flips

Noom
tobee · 20/08/2021 20:57

You get different units like ml, g, kilo, grams, ounces, calories, teaspoon, tablespoon, etc if you scroll on “other units”

ingeborg3 · 21/08/2021 02:25

There are two 'other units' on the right bottom side. If the first one does not give you the right measurements, click on the second one.

Coffeeonmytoffee · 21/08/2021 06:33

I joined, thought it was rubbish and got my money back. Then the next day they offered me membership for 90% off.

ingeborg3 · 22/08/2021 22:49

I use the free version to count calories. I did lose some weight with the paid one, but then I reached a plateau.
