Serious accident at primary school

When I picked my son (Y5)up from school today, I noticed he was wearing his hoodie pulled tightly over his forehead, even though it wasn’t raining. When we got home, he started to complain and said he wanted to be homeschooled because he does not like school.

He is usually a very energetic child, but this afternoon he went to bed around 5 pm — very early for him — and said he had not slept well the previous night.

When I woke him at 7 to check if he wanted something to eat or drink, I noticed that the front of his hair had been shaved very closely. At first, he would not talk about it. Later, he said he had done it himself, but this seems unlikely — we do not have a shaver at home, and the cut looks very even, as though it was shaved.

I am very concerned about what may have happened and

Your headline is very misleading!

Zonder · 15/09/2025 22:30

Id email school and ask for a call back. But I would also try and speak to him again. This sounds very odd.

padronpepper · 15/09/2025 22:30

Do you think his hair was cut against his will at school ?

LIZS · 15/09/2025 22:31

Surely it was not an accident! Just ask his teacher whether they had access to scissors or similar? He might have done it himself and either been egged on or teased afterwards.

Ana19755 · 15/09/2025 22:35

Yes. I do not think he cut it.

What did his hair look like first thing today when you took him to school?

Spend time gently getting to the bottom of things. Ask him to show you the razor he used at home, so you can put it away. Speak discreetly to the teacher as you drop him off and ask if she/he noticed anything yesterday. Also explain he came home with a shaved patch asking to be home schooled and taking himself off to bed early.

Ana19755 · 15/09/2025 22:38

It looks like as it was shaved.

Sorry, but serious accident? Where's the accident?

RitzyMcFee · 15/09/2025 22:41

So you didn’t see him without his hood up from when you picked him up from school until the next morning?

4forksache · 15/09/2025 22:43

Tell him he’s not in trouble even if he did it himself, you just want to understand what happened.

Be calm whatever he tells you.

No, the OP woke him at 7pm to offer food.

it was fine. We will go to the school and talk, and we will hide his head under a hat—it looks awful. If this happened there, I do not want to send him back. His hair is really bad, and I need to take him to the barber before going anywhere

NerrSnerr · 15/09/2025 22:46

What was his hair like before it was shaved? Could the issue actually be that he was being picked on for his hair so he shaved it when he got home? Could his hoodie have been up to hide his actual hair?

If it happened in school it means a young child is walking around with a razor in his pocket I assume? If so you need to tell the school ASAP as it could lead to an actual serious accident.

Hi I did not notice, I gave him snack and he went to bed after at 5 PM.

Don't send him to school tomorrow talk to the school first and get to the bottom of it if someone has shaved his hair through force against his consent thats really serious

My main concern is someone is a primary school has a shaver or sth else and feel my child is not safe in his school.

That sounds really stressful OP. Poor boy. Something weird is going on, that’s for sure! Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Thanks so much. I wasn’t expecting anyone to reply at this time of night. I want to know if this has happened to anyone else child? His hair needs a barber with a #0 or #1 clipper. 😪

OP, you're going to have to talk to him or get someone else he trusts to. If you go to the school the first thing they're going to do is ask him what happened because they almost certainly don't know - a staff member would not have cut his hair. If he gives them the same answer he gave you they'll be stuck.

Assure him that he's absolutely not in trouble and you're not angry, but you need to know if someone else cut his hair or put something in it that he cut out because you're concerned he's not safe at school.

IkeaKallax · 15/09/2025 23:32

Why didn't you pull his hoodie from his face when he was hiding this? Are you absolutely certain that he hadn't done this to himself before he left for school with a house razor?

Are you saying a child in school has a razor or shaver? If that's the case you need to ring the school asap. But it would take a very skilled primary age child to take hair off in a straight line with a razor or a shaver. This feels very unlikely.

Are you certain his hair had no changes when he went to school? Why are you assuming this wasn't done with scissors?

I'm sorry this sounds so negative but this feels like it's something that you really need to be clear on the facts for.

He told me that someone did it during lunchtime, but it happened so quickly that he just felt sth on his back. His friend then told him that his hair had been cut. He felt something fuzzy on his head, went to the toilet, and discovered that his hair had been shaved... I have to wait till tomorrow and ask the school and his friend.

i would try to stay calm and help him feel better about his hair. Keep reiterating that hair will grow back and definitely sort a trip to the barber asap if it's needed to make it look as good as it can. Speak with school first thing tomorrow. If he is upset (going to bed at 5pm sounds a bit worrying) then I would consider a day at home while you get it sorted and raise the issue with school. If he can go in though, it might stop other kids speculating and avoid attracting etc attention when he does return.

why would he only feel something on his back if the front was cut? It still sounds like he isn't sharing the full truth / details for whatever reason. Hoping you can get to the bottom of it all asap.

Littletreefrog · 16/09/2025 00:09

So was it the front or the back OP? because the location could very much determine whether it was done by someone else or your son or wether it was with his knowledge or not.

And the teacher did nothing when they came in after lunch with a chunk of hair cut out and nobody informed you. You need to put a serious complaint in against the school
