Hi all, just tried to respond on the previous thread here

and found it was too big, so thought it might be worth starting another in case anyone else wants to continue the discussion.

In response to Cakes, two points.

First: the entire topic of weaning and milk is quite a complex one, moreso if you start involving dummies. I've never had an issue with an older child having either a bottle or a dummy - indeed my first child had a bottle of milk as his replacement for breastfeeding from about 18 months, and continued to do so, preferring milk to 'proper' food till he was about 3. I'm not certain why - perhaps my dodgy cooking played a part - but there were efforts made to encourage eating and he didn't really want it.

I've been massively flamed on here for allowing him a bottle at pre school, and a dummy which he still has on occasion at 7 (though will not in public - his choice). I see NOTHING wrong with that...he is insecure sometimes and it comforts him.

Anyway...enough about poor old ds1.

The other point was about the word 'Boobie' which you suggested some EBFers 'teach' their child to say as opposed to 'milk'. I am baffled by this assertion.

There are as many names for it as there are women who breastfeed, short term or not - I shan't go into the variety of words I have heard used but I really, really have never heard of a policy of EBFers to use the word 'Boobie'. And really, I don't see why they shouldn't - but please do try and remember that kids often choose their own word, it isn't usually a case of the parent deciding what they call the breast.

For what it's worth, ds2 is limited in his language still but my breasts are known, somewhat inspiringly, as 'This one milky' and 'That one milky'

On that note I will abandon this thing to the mercies of anyone else as crazed determined interested as I am in the whole topic...back later.

"'curtailed breastfeeding' for those who wean earlier " That has made me giggle. A lot. Thank you!

CoupleofKooks, my Dd does this too...I'm forever saying 'ouch! you're hurting me' or 'open your mouth wider' and she moves, but she pushes on my breast whilst pulling with her mouth iyswim? I don't know why she hurts me(I'm feeding now and wincing), but at least I've no broken skin . If I did get that, I'd pop my Silverettes on and I highly recommend them for super fast healing. Expensive, but soooooo worth it.

I'm 35 tomorrow. This is significant...

My 14mo DD has been ebf and I've every intention of continuing. We both adore it. However, I'd like to have another baby and my periods haven't returned yet - no doubt because the Dairy Queen's night wakings fluctuate between zero and six. Twice so far she's slept through for a week or two and i've had mucus changes, PMT and even backache - but no actual period. Has anyone else had this experience? I wouldn't stop feeding her just because I'm ttc, and I conceived naturally last time, but I do have a history of PCOS and would rather not hang around now that my early thirties are over...

CoupleofKooks · 08/07/2010 19:03

solo that's exactly it - like a bird tugging a worm out of the ground or something

well all is much much better today with the new regime of 'open wide' before latching, and also our old friend lansinoh
i am still finding the lying down night time feeds a bit dicey, but this has inspired me to see if i can settle him in different ways during the night and once or twice he has just gone back to sleep, so maybe this could have a silver lining

btw i mentioned this to a group of friends yesterday and they all say they are prone to get sore during the night feeds, sounds like lying down / half asleep / bad latch problems are common

Elpis sorry I don't know the answer, but didn't want to just ignore you

Elpis - Ihave a 14mo DS I'm 37yo and hoping to start ttc from next month. DS has significantly reduced his feeding though to just first thing in the morning and bedtime. My periods returned in May.
How many feeds does your DD have a day? IT is possible to continue to BF and ttc. There is a support thread here

Elpis · 13/07/2010 22:59

Thanks essenceofSES - she generally feeds at 7.30am, I either express around 230ml for her at work or feed her a couple of times during non-work days, then a snack at 6.30pm and another at bedtime. And she usually wakes once during the night. So around 5-6 times. I could substitute cows' milk at this point, I know, but I do enjoy feeding her and obviously it's a better food for her.

Good luck with ttc!
