I'm bf-ing. thoiught it was going ok - despite zero confidence, having not managed 3 times before. ds was doing loads of dirty nappies, but now none since thu night. should I worry? Lots of wet nappies and he's not got sunken fontanelle or ath

sorry abt typing - one handed

I wouldnt be that worried. Ds quite often went 10 long days. I take it the wee one doesnt seem in distress or anything?

waitingforbedtime · 06/03/2010 20:52

PS you could always call la leche league / nhs for advice

Dumbledoresgirl · 06/03/2010 20:52

No that sounds normal to me. They are all different and I was taken aback when my fourth breastfed baby didnt poo for days on end, but that is as normal as a baby pooing every feed (which is what my first baby did).

itstooruddycold · 06/03/2010 20:53

Don't worry, quite common with bf babies.

My DS didn't go for 4 days once when he was about 5 wks, I worried too, but then had a lovely explosion on day 5 and even now at 6 months whilst he usually goes once a day, every now and then we get nothing for 2 or 3 days.

Totally normal, don't worry
And well done for BFing!!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 06/03/2010 20:54

Up to a week between dirty nappis can be normal for bf babies.

As long as he seems well otherwise (like you say he does) I wouldn't worry. If you are worried though, give NHS direct a call, or your OOH Drs.

itstooruddycold · 06/03/2010 20:56

Oh and if you want him to go, like i did before his christening when he hadn't gone for 3 days and i was imagining the state of the white gown; bicycle legs and tummy rubbing!

OhFuck · 06/03/2010 20:56

While it's true that breastfed babies can go ages without pooing, I think at 10 days you might still be expecting quite a lot of poos, so bumping til one of the experts to come along. Well done you for doing so well thus far!

thisisyesterday · 06/03/2010 20:58

actually the not pooing for days is normal, but really only for an older breastfed baby (like, post 5 or 6 weeks)
at 10 days you would really expect him to be doing at least a couple each day.

tbh he probably IS fine, but if I were you I would ring one of the BF helplines for more advice.

preggersplayspop · 06/03/2010 20:58

Agree with the others this is normal. My DS went 4 days without pooing when he was a few days old and now (he is 14 weeks) he probably goes every 2-3 days.

His elder brother used to go more frequently and their poos even have different consistency, which surprised me a bit at the start (as its obv the same breast milk!).

Megletwantsittobesummer · 06/03/2010 20:58

I had the same when I was bf. DD had a lovely phase of only poo-ing 2/3 times a week. Lots of wee and otherwise fine, just less mess to deal with.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

thisisyesterday · 06/03/2010 21:02

just googled and found this from LLL which is useful in knowing what's usual for a breastfed baby

TiggieWiggle · 06/03/2010 21:04

My DD did this too and I was really worried but she was fine - it was an explosion when it arrived though, I remember phoning DH at work with the happy news!

PotPourri · 06/03/2010 21:12

Right, will try to stay calm.

I'm really fighting myself over how things are going. I'm worrying about everything. I feel there is practically no milk there in the evening, but am feeding 2 - 2.5 hourly in the day. spend AGES getting latched on well and he readjusts himself so that it is a bit nippy - not unbearable, but worries me that either no milk or not getting the hindmilk etc

I so want this to work this time so will keep going and get some help from bf support worker on Monday - will also be discharged to hv then.

fingers crossed for an explosion soon!

My DS passed meconium, and after he had gotten rid of all that (by end of day 2), he didn't go for about 12 days! He was BF and although it we heard it was pretty normal, we were referred to the Paed at hospital.
He was being examined when he decided to let out his first proper poo...
When got our coats and left...

preggersplayspop · 06/03/2010 21:16

Sounds like you are doing great.

thisisyesterday · 06/03/2010 21:18

potpourri, whereabouts in the country are you?
it sounds like you're doing fine. a lot of mums worry about evening milk supply, possibly because many babies like to feed a lot then! but honestly, if you are feeding him on demand then i am sure he is getting enouhg, and esp if he is having lots of wet nappies.

I would give one of the following numbers a ring now though, to put your mind at rest

National Breastfeeding Helpline 0844 20 909 20

Association of Breastfeeding Mothers helpline 08444 122 949 9.30am to 10.30pm every day

Breastfeeding Network Supporterline: 0844 412 4664 9.30am to 9.30pm every day of the year

La Leche League Telephone Helpline: 0845 120 2918

National Childbirth Trust Breastfeeding line: 0300 330 0771 8am?10pm, seven days a week

PotPourri · 06/03/2010 21:41

Thanks all. DH keeps telling me i am doing well. And I know I must be as i haven't considered formula and its already day 10.

thanks for your supportive words. Hope i will still be on this forum in 5 or 6 months!

Potpourri - fwiw I found breastfeeding one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life (and rewarding too) . It wasnt just the relentless feeding and no sleep it was the lack of 'control' - with a bottle you can see they have had X number of ounces but with bf you just have to go with it unless shown otherwise (signs of dehydration etc). It takes a while but you'll get there and always trust your instincts - ime you'll know when you're really worried and know when you're just panicking a bit iyswim?

BikeRunSki · 06/03/2010 22:03

Our health visitor's local record for a baby not pooing is 11 days! And then the poor child exploded on HV's scales in clinic one day.

thisisyesterday · 06/03/2010 22:06

sorry to repeat myself, but this is NOT normal in such a young breastfed baby.

please ring one of the helplines for more advice.

chances are your baby is absolutely fine, but the not pooing for days is not really something you would expect in a 10 day old

5yearsto40bob · 06/03/2010 22:22

thisisyesterday - it is perfectly normal for a bf baby (of any age)to go without a poo for days, sometimes they can manage not to poo for over a week. It's because bf is full of 'good stuff' that they need to grow and develop, so there is very little waste.
FF babies poo all the time, because formula has a lot more waste in it.
Op you are doing a fab job, don't worry.

thisisyesterday · 06/03/2010 22:26

no, it really isn't

after about 5 or 6 weeks yes. but it is not normal really before then
of course some babies do it and are fine. but it is not the normal course for a 10 day old.

tiktok · 07/03/2010 00:11

It isn't normal for a breastfed baby not to poo at 10 days.

It does not mean anyone should hit the panic button, but it does mean this baby probably needs to be weighed, and the whole situation assessed by the midwife or HV (ie not a telephone helpline, because they will, or should, say the same thing....get the baby assessed).

Babies beyond newborn may go several days without a poo. This is not what's happening here.

This baby may be fine, but no one on a talkboard can tell if he is.

PotPourri, you need to call the midwife.

tiktok · 07/03/2010 00:13

And I'm going to say it: no one on a talkboard can say a baby is fine and that someone should not worry. You can't tell!!

NotQuiteCockney · 07/03/2010 07:39

As several others have said - irregular poops before a month isn't normal. Before a month, a breastfed baby should really be pooing a couple of times a day. Any less is cause for concern. As tiktok says, not a 'panic stations' thing, but something worth investigating.

After a month, irregular pooing, if everything else is normal, is fine. Ok, they say it's ok after 6 weeks, but either way, it's not normal at 10 days.

It may well be normal for your baby, but as others have said, you should get him weighed, to be sure.
