Photo of DS2 today has gotten me worried... :( Come and re-assure me!

Hi all,

Can you all please do me a favour? Come and look at the two photos of my two very beautiful DSs that I have posted on my profile and tell me that DS2 looks healthy? I took the photo of DS2 (I've been taking photos of both DSs in same clothes at around same age for comparison) today and having posted it next to photo of DS1 at the same age, it has gotten me worried!

Background: I tried desperately to BF DS1 and limped to the six-week mark before giving up. I have a medical condition that fucks up messes about my prolactin level so it's difficult to tell if that played a part in it though the BF-ing counsellor seems to think so. With DS2, I gave up a lot quicker (at week 1 ) due to my medical condition still persisting and that I suffered a prolapse on day 2 so just couldn't struggle with BF-ing on top of everything else and I told myself I was going to enjoy DS2's baby days a lot more...

DS2 is a lot more contented and smilier than DS1, just an easier baby overall. But he is so not interested in his milk. I was obsessed with DS1's weight and he was weighed every week at the baby clinic. Again, I told myself I wasn't going to stress so much about DS2 so the last time he was at the baby clinic, he was 10 weeks old and 10lbs 6ozs. He's just turned 16 weeks. At the moment he has 4 bottles of milk (I make up 5oz each time) and hardly finishes each bottle. He will then wake up once a night to have a 3/4 oz bottle. So he is having anything from 20-24oz of milk a day, which I just don't think is enough...

I've tried everything - feeding him more often (not interested, clamps his mouth shut); giving him a dream feed (again, not interested, clamps his mouth shut and 'fights' off the bottle), changed formula (made not an ounce of difference). Now being pressured to give him baby rice by MIL. Arghhhh!!!! Can you please come and hold my hand and tell me he looks healthy and happy? DS2 is such a sweet little soul. He is alert, happy and poos once/twice a day and plenty of wet nappies. I am going to take him to the baby clinic on Monday and really dreading it... But he just looks so dinky next to DS1 (can't believe I used to worry about DS1's weight!). Thanks!

Ahh Angel1976 they looked perfectly fine (beautiful) my dd's are the same dd2 is a wee tote and pailer in comparison to dd1 at the same age

dd1 always wear the next size up in clothes and dd2 is 3 and still wears 2-3

Lemonmeringue · 26/02/2010 22:55

Same here - I have a big, sturdy girl and a little elf. The elf is now 9, wears clothes that her sister wore at 6, eats well, is healthy, happy and energetic.

Both of yours are lovely.

angel1976, My DS weighted the same at one month as my DD weighted at three months.

There is still not much difference in size between them despite being 2 year gap in age !

In general breastfed babies put on more weight faster than formula fed babies in the first few months. Then the breastfed babies slow down whilst the formula fed babies continue to grow at a more constant rate.

It is inaccurate to say "FF babies are usually obese". What she should of said is, as a formula fed baby is more likely to keep sucking and take a full bottle, even if that is more than they need. Mothers need to watch their babies closely and stop the bottle feed when the baby has had enough, which I bet you do already.

It is not possible to overfeed a breastfed baby, they control the amount of milk they take it. So they can be fed on request for as long as they like.

The other thing to think about Angel is how big you and their dad are. Are you both Oriental/Asian, or is it just one of you? Are you or DH/P tall or small? Slim or Heavily built?

A colleague of mine was under immense pressure to "get more weight" on his daughter, he and his wife were both Indian, both small, (he was about the same height as me) and very slightly built, so needless to say their daughter was a wee baby (just under 6lb at birth, full-term) and grew accordingly. But because she didn't gain 4-6oz a week their stupid HV got all flappy and stressed and tried to get them to supplement etc. COmpletely ridiculous, the baby was chubby and healthy and growing and gaining weight, she was just a naturally small baby as she had come from small parents.

Thanks all. Poor DS2 is ill with a bug and has been throwing up his milk today. Sigh The worry never ends! But he seems happy enough. That poor little bubsie!

Babieseverywhere I wish DS2 would continue sucking! That boy just isn't keen on milk. He has a couple of ounces and he's done.

GreenMonkies I guess I am petty small. I'm the Oriental bit, only 5' 3" and 8.5 stone while DH is British but not tall and fairly slim either. It's just DS1 is a chunky monkey (can see he is still smaller than most other boys his age but he feels solid iykwim) so DS1 is looking tiny. Gotta stop comparing! Argh! Will definitely update on Monday when I find out DS2's weight. I'm hoping he is at least 6kgs... Fingers crossed!

They both look healthy and beautiful. You are a lucky lady x

TulipsInTheRain · 27/02/2010 19:27

Maybe it would help if you thought of it in terms of 'Ds2 takes less because he's smaller' rather than 'He's smaller because he feeds less'

I had two very sturdy babies and then ds2... who is what the doctor could only desribe as 'wiry'

it's a bit shocking when i compare pics, or when i realise he's just growing into clothes at 1 that ds1 grew out of at 6 months, but he's healthy, happy and developing fine.

So glad to hear there are other mothers in my shoes... Thank you all for taking the time to post. I was thinking about this today and I did wonder why I am so surprised by them being so different. I think it's because a lot of my friends who have two kids of the same gender, when they post pictures up of their kids, it's always about how similar they are. For me, because I knew I was going to have two boys, I just assumed they would be carbon copies (no idea why!). And everyone said how similar DS1 and DS2 are when they are born... Now they just seem to look more and more different by the day! Weird!

Right... Just took DS2 to the baby clinic and his weight now is... 5.55kgs or 12lbs 4ozs. Argh, he's dropped to the 2 percentile line. Didn't help there was a massive baby at the clinic that was his age. But the HV didn't seem worried and says he looks really healthy and happy (he was smiling away and kicking). The mother of the big baby says she was really impressed with DS2 as he held up his head really well while her DS couldn't even hold up his head as it's so heavy (her words, not mine!). DS2 has been vomiting the last two days though because of a cold and he seems much brighter today so I guess he is just my little elf.

ooohh they both look gorgeous - just different people!

SiriusStar · 01/03/2010 13:40

If your 2 boys were not related and you were looking at them, you wouldn't think anything other than what lovely healthy looking lovies they are. But, because you are their mummy you compare. It's natural but can send you a bit mad.

angel1976 · 01/03/2010 20:54

Sirius - You hit the nail on the head! Have to stop comparing... Have to stop comparing... Have to stop comparing... Have to stop comparing... Have to stop comparing... Have to stop comparing... Have to stop comparing... Have to stop comparing... Have to stop comparing... Have to stop comparing... Have to stop comparing... Have to stop comparing... Have to stop comparing... Have to stop comparing...

Your boys are lush....

1st piccie - oh look at him, just want to squidge his cheeks and tummy!

2nd piccie - oh my god, he is adorable, just want to squidge his cheeks and tummy!

Glad it went ok today - even if he is even more diddy, you said yourself he has been unwell..

I always think as long as they are interested in the world around them (and you can tell from his eyes that he is!), there isn't much wrong!

Congrats on two such beautiful, and different, little men xx

angel1976 · 02/03/2010 20:47

Thank you Skillbo. They are very gorgeous, in my eyes of course! DS2 is drinking really little milk at the moment... Not even really finishing an 4oz bottle. He had his injections yesterday though so I hope it will pass. He is such a sweet little thing...

Oh gosh - you have gorgeous children! Lucky girl!

Buzzybb · 15/03/2010 19:17

Am so jealous of his hair my little one is still a baldie baby.
He looks perfect and happy and healthy
Ask at the clinic if you are worried or keep a log for a few days so you see exactly what he drinks but tbh if his nappies are wet he is prob fine.
Congrats on your beautiful DC
