Was Tesco a bit thoughtless in choosing this Image for newborn nappies packaging?

There has been some debate on the Politics of breastfeeding facebook group regarding and I am not sure if I want to raise it with Tesco. Or dismiss the issue, as likely to raise resentment from some quarters about oversensetive 'wimmin' whining on about breastfeeding and making other women feel bad about their choices etc.!

Still I don't know how long Tesco have used a picture of a woman bottle feeding a newborn on this nappy packaging so maybe it's old news!??

I would be interested in other views on this, cheers.

I agree with prammymammy - really who gives a shit?

SouthMum · 08/01/2010 11:41

Puzzlerocks: It is tiresome that others get so defensive, as though it is an attack on their decision to formula feed. It is categorically not. It is a little unpleasant to pop up on threads like this simply to sneer at peoples efforts.

Wind your neck in Puzzle, I am pro-BF as it happens.

And sorry for 'popping up' next time I'll announce my presence

CarrieDaBabi · 08/01/2010 11:52

why say who cares or who gives a shit?

i care about mothers and babies therefore i care about this.

franch · 08/01/2010 11:54

Well said Carrie and tiktok

catastrojb · 08/01/2010 11:57

what tiktok said.
Whether or not this image is conscious cynical marketing (I don't know enough about marketing to say either way, so I bow to those that do and assume that there was no active hidden agenda) we are bombarded with enough images of bottle feeding for it to become so normal that we don't even notice them anymore. So it feels like the "normal" way to do things.
If the same were to happen with breastfeeding then the pitifully poor breastfeeding rates in this country would be improved - not by pushing it on those that for whatever reason need to or want to bottle feed (I try and stay out of that debate as most of my friends bottlefeed), but by encouraging those who want to breastfeed but feel under pressure not to or who don't know how.
Partly for those reasons and partly because I find the image totally unnecessary on nappies I have e-mailed a very rational e-mail without reference to conspiracy theories .

Ivykaty44 · 08/01/2010 11:57

tesco sell formula it was done on purpose - sorry but don't trust tesco at all

BadRomance · 08/01/2010 11:59

Do you seriously think a woman is going to give up breastfeeding just because the appies she buys show formula feeding

'oh what a good idea- maybe I'll do it'

tiktok · 08/01/2010 12:05

BadRomance you said: "Do you seriously think a woman is going to give up breastfeeding just because the appies she buys show formula feeding"

Read the thread, do.

No one sensible thinks that.

FFS.

MarineIguana · 08/01/2010 12:05

No BadRomance not at all - but in general the image says "bottle feeding is fine and dandy and great for your baby" and that's the worry. It reinforces the widespread idea that that's just what you do when you have a baby. Someone who wants to BF is extremely unlikely to be influenced by it. But the argument is that responsible makers of baby products should really reflect the facts - that BF is better for your baby and should be more the norm.

franch · 08/01/2010 12:12

Missed the point BadRomance!!!

Bigmouthstrikesagain · 08/01/2010 12:17

Okaaay Bad romance - you are either crediting anyone who expresses any misgivings about this picture on the nappy packet with very little intelligence or think we credit anyone who may buy or see these nappies on the shelf with little intelligence. Wrong wrongity wrong.

it is not about decisions on how to feed a baby made by any individual - it is about an inappropriate image on a pack of nappies for newborns. In a culture that normalises ff over bf - as has been stated many times in different ways on this thread.

If it was a photo of a four month old baby being fed a jar of baby food would there be the same response to it, do you reckon?

MarineIguana · 08/01/2010 13:52

On here there would!

Earplugs · 08/01/2010 13:57

So what about the mumsnet logo then? Was that a bit thoughtless?
Should we start a campaign, is there a hidden agenda?

They do after all accept money from advertisers, perhaps this was a way of promoting formular feeding after a backhander from SMA?

No? Riduculous? Absolutely. Rightly or wrongly we associate bottles with babies, the images crop up quite innocently everywhere. Is it something that should be changed, maybe. But is it always the result of some evil corporate giant trying brainwash you into buying formular, no.

Yes Tesco do sell it, along with every other supermarket. And as its all branded, they do not make huge profits from it (is it priced that differently from other retailers I wonder?)

The image was just one of those things, a seemingly harmless image to a 20 year old graphic designer. And if you don't believe me, just ask the one who designed the Mumsnet logo!

catastrojb · 08/01/2010 13:57

particularly by us marginalised BLWers......

catastrojb · 08/01/2010 13:59

x-posts with earplugs....i was referring to ghouls' post.

Earplugs · 08/01/2010 14:42

Just a thought, perhaps Terry Leahy is starting a thread somewhere as we speak titled 'Was Mumsnet a bit thoughless when they chose this logo for their pro BF parenting web site?' Lets hope he doesn't 'demand' for this to be changed before he considers changing the packaging on his nappies

nicolafromtesco · 11/01/2010 15:41

Hi there. I work for Tesco and I thought it might be helpful to explain what happened with the use of this image. As some of you guessed, the image was used in error ? as soon as we realised we took immediate steps to correct the problem.

No more nappies have been produced using this packaging and replacement stocks with new packaging should be appearing in our shops very shortly.

We are sorry for this and would like re-iterate that it was in no way an attempt to promote any particular feeding regime or product.

If you have any other questions, you may find it easiest to call our customer service number on 0800 505555.
