bit "out there" this one - but would anyone consider donating breast milk for my friend who has terminal cancer?

Really hope this doesn't offend anyone but she is only 37, has 4 and 2 yr old ds's and has stage 4 cancer. She is trying the raw food diet and everything she can to try to hold the cancer where it is and get as much time with her boys as possible.
We've read research about the curing powers of breast milk and in the US it seems it's possible to buy breast milk on the internet. Haven't found any similar UK sites.
It occurred to me it was worth asking mumsnetters if they had any spare breast milk??
thanks

Starlight, I think you are right that they may not let you have any, but they might be prepared to help with the collection / heat treating. When I donated (2007), they told me they sold it to UCH for £100 a litre as it was in such short supply and the blood testing and heat treating was expensive to organise.

nikki1978 · 27/11/2009 19:56

Can't help I'm afraid but has your friend read this book?:-

www.amazon.co.uk/Your-Life-Hands-Understand-Overcome/dp/0753512041/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=12 59351735&sr=8-1

The lasy who wrote it overcame cancer (terminal as well) as is a scientist so is worth a read.

deaconblue · 27/11/2009 20:00

thanks for the recommendation, will pass it on. Must go and put ds to bed, friend just phoned and said she feels "overwhelmed and humbled" that so many people are willing to help. She deserves any shot at a bit more life that she can get and I'm so grateful to you all for you offers. Will be back to organise pick ups etc tomorrow, thanks again

I am very close to Peterborough, although useless to you as not breast feeding anymore. Why don't you post this on the north and south cambs boards on netmums (I know sorry) but you will be able to contact local people there who may well be able to help

misdee · 27/11/2009 20:05

shoppingbags, i am going to start expressing extra milk for my 1yr old soon, and am in herts. i cannot donate to milk banks due to dd age.

IF i have any excess (probaby a few oz a week to start) she would be welcome to it.

misdee · 27/11/2009 20:06

am in herts

stressed2007 · 27/11/2009 20:31

post on the local board on here - if you can't work out the one for peterborough on here just shout and someone will be able to help I am sure

chocolaterabbit · 27/11/2009 20:53

Hi, am bf DS atm and am expressing a few ounces a day to get pissed at Christmas in case its needed. All frozen atm and happy to donate. Am in Oxon but could get it to london without a problem if that is any help.

I have quite a bit in my freezer from when ds was in scbu and I was pumping for his tube, but its 8 months old now. Its recomended that its used within 6 months but our freezer is a commercial one. some of it is collostrum and some is from when my milk came in. Its all from 2-6 days after delivery. I had a crash section so it will have traces of morphine and antibiotics in it. There is probably over 500mls. I live a couple of hours away from cambs but my SIL visits her parents in Spalding quite often a weekends if someone could pick it up from there or find a way to post it then she is welcome to it.

Taramuddle · 27/11/2009 21:57

I've some in my freezer which is a couple of months old. You friend is welcome to it if you find a way to transport as I'm in Dorset.

Could pump some more if needed.

cwtchy · 27/11/2009 22:08

I can help if you find a way of transporting it. I am in Cardiff so could maybe combine with spiderlight earlier up the thread if you do.

saintlydamemrsturnip · 27/11/2009 22:13

You probably want colostrum. Well I would in her situation. You can buy cow's colostrum online (some people with autistic kids use it, so if you can't find it type in autism biomedical and you will find some help) - it might be worth trying, in a 'nothing to lose' type way.

I haven't had a child in nearly 5 years so I have no colostrum; I would have gladly sent it to her if I did (I gave it to my other kids each time I had a baby).

suwoo · 27/11/2009 22:15

I have colstrum- posted above.

Lilyloo · 27/11/2009 22:16

If it's frozen surely it could be sent by courier ?
So sorry has been 6 mths since i bf dd , am so sorry for your friend.

motherlovebone · 27/11/2009 22:35

im in surrey.
cant travel but can donate.
you can cat me.

Feelingforty · 27/11/2009 23:10

I stopped bf Dd in January, but still have milk - well I do when I squeeze nipples. It might be possible that you are able to provide her with milk. Have you tried expressing ?

I'm too far I'm afraid, or else I would have given it a go.

Good luck.

StealthPolarBear · 28/11/2009 08:36

so sorry to hear about your friend

Longtalljosie · 28/11/2009 09:32

I have some in the freezer, I am in St Albans, not too far for her sister to come and collect?

PercyPigPie · 28/11/2009 13:20

Sorry to hear about your friend.

Shopping, I think you could lactate again - I am sure I have read about adoptive mothers lactating with the right stimulation.

bronze · 28/11/2009 13:32

hmm
now
I'm feeding my 7 month old I havent tried pumping this time
but
like 4 and not out I wouldnt mind trying*
plus we live very close so a combined sending of milk might work

I think you need to find a way to send frozen goos so you can let us know

  • this is close to home to me as a friend of ours died of cancer last year. She had breast cancer that went to her bones and she hadnt noticed any lumps as she had been continuously breastfeeding for a few years. I know it upset her that she had to stop feeding so she could have some treatment to prolong her life
pofacedandproud · 28/11/2009 13:56

Have just read about CV247. It may not help but harmless and may be worth trying. Have also read about benefits of curcumin [from turmeric] and zingerone [derived from ginger root] again harmless to try and may be worth a go. And vitamin d3, 5000 IU a day [obviously all as complementary not alternative therapies]

Best wishes to your friend.

pofacedandproud · 28/11/2009 13:56

this
is about CV247

peppapighastakenovermylife · 28/11/2009 13:56

I am in swansea but could get it to cardiff to combine?
