tommee tippee anti colic bottles vs dr browns?

duende · 11/10/2009 13:31

we are currently using the tommee tippee anti colic bottles for my 9 week old DS but he is still suffering horribly with wind. we screams during feeds and is in awful discomfort - painful to watch I was wondering if the dr browns bottles could be better, or do they work in the same way as the tommee tippee ones with the vent system? has anyone used both? I am desperate to help my baby

I have used closer to nature but nit anti colic- which gave dd loads of wind. Dr brown are brill - gives less wind than BF.

Dummies- dare I suggest helped my dd's wind espeically the farting

Also i put gripe water in the bottle sometimes which really helped

good luck I know how hard it is x

thrifty · 11/10/2009 13:45

have you tried infacol to get the wind up? all the anti-colic bottles have a vent system, whether they work or not is down to personal preference,I think.
we had mam ones, they were a right pain in the bum to wash, sterilise and put back together, they often leaked if yo didnt get it quite right.
infacol is good for getting the wind up or dentinox.
if wind is not really the problem (endless screaming evening/night) then suggest you try colief (quite expensive but worth it!) or if on formula try onmeo comfort (it has less lactose in it - if they still make it - ds is 4 now but had horrible horrible colic/lactose intolerance)

duende · 11/10/2009 14:01

thanks for your suggestions.
we have tried infacol and dentinox - don't work. gripe water helped for a little while but now just makes him very sick. he's on colief and this has definitely reduced the evening screaming sessions. now he only really screams when being fed and it sometimes takes forever. he cries so much he goes all purple and forgets to catch his breath, I need to shake him or blow in his mouth to make him breathe again. very distressing

if the colief is working and your ff have you tried a lactose free formula? we ended up using sma lf. its quite dear but you may be able to get some on prescription. its much less of a faff than colief, and we found ds thrived on it.
the breath holding is a bit worrying at that young age (ds did that when older 9months on) have you seen the doctor? could signify low iron levels.

tethersend · 11/10/2009 18:20

My DD was exactly the same- we switched to Dr. Brown's bottles and to Aptamil easy digest formula.

I'm not sure which one worked, or whether it was a combination of both, but overnight the problem disappeared.

If you switch to an easy digest formula, make sure you go up a teat size, as it is a bit thicker than other formulae.

Good luck

duende · 11/10/2009 18:35

I have asked my GP about putting him on LF formula but she said she saw no reasons to do it, and that if he was lactose intolerant, he wouldn't be gaining weight.

tethersend, I will try dr browns + easy digest. just one question - when you used easy digest, did you always mix the powder with very hot water? I've read somewhere that if you mix it with room temp. water it doesn't mix properly because of the starch.

tethersend · 11/10/2009 18:42

Mix the formula with a small amount of boiling water and top up with cooled boiled water- I think the guidelines state that that is the way to do it, as the formula is not sterile and germs need to be killed.

Having said that, I mix boiling and cooled boiled water together and then add the powder. As long as the water is not stone cold, it will mix fine. I take a flask of boiling water out with us to top up the cooled boiled water in the bottle.

That is only the way I do it, please don't give me a flaming for not doing it as per the guidelines!

Hope it works- reading your post brought it all back to me

tethersend · 11/10/2009 18:44

Oh, and another great tip I got was to stir in the powder, rather than shake it up- prevents air bubbles

duende · 11/10/2009 18:45

tethersend, thank you. I was asking for practical advice, not official guidelines ;)

I am praying it works..

MaM Ultivent bottles are also very good. I prefered them to the Dr Browns.

mumandlovingit · 11/10/2009 19:07

please do not rely on the "if there is lactose intolerance the child will not be putting on weight" its c**p.

our son threw up every bottle violently, screamed 24/7 when awake and was constipated. the classic signs that are supposed to be with lactose intolerance are diarhoea and not putting on weight. my son cannot have dairy it turns out, even though he put on weight and was constipated. it was still the lactose in the milk that was making him scream and constipated. he didnt get on with the lactose.

we've been advised to use dr browns or similar and also cow and gate comfortor similar milk for more settled digestion.

it is thicker and you need a faster flowing teat and the water needs to be hot to mix it or it doesnt mix right as it is thicker. the hot water also breaks down more of the lactose or something like that.

good luck, i hope your little one is settled more soon.

teatank · 11/10/2009 19:17

hi duende i use dr brown bottles and there brilliant. my ds used to throw up sma powdered milk so we switched to aptimal which was much better.

mumandlovingit · 11/10/2009 19:27

just read my post back, my son is now 8, not still on bottles! we've been adviced to use the other milk/bottles for our next child. cow and gate comfort is sold in asda, tescos and other general places and is around £7.95.

duende · 11/10/2009 19:55

teatank, did you find that using dr brown bottles reduced the wind and throwing up in your LO?

mumandlovingit, thank you. i will look into cow &gate comfort or aptamil ED.

just popping in, not wanting to confuse matters but je sounds exactly like both my ds's. Describe abit mpore what he is like during the fed? It could be silent reflux?ds2 is now 10months and dr browns have always been the best, he still has reflux.

duende · 11/10/2009 20:08

mad4myboys, he will start feeding, and stop after a couple of minutes. he then starts screaming, arching his back and often stopping to breath looks very scary he will scream and scream until we manage to get the wind up, then start feeding again. sometimes the same scenario repeats a few times. I have been wondering about reflux, especially that he brings up a lot. we also had 2 episodes of projectile vomitting. (again, my gp dismissed this as he is gaining weight. I know that some babies with reflux thrive and gain weight but I didn't have enough ammunition to fight with her :/ )
have these bottles helped with your ds's reflux?

DS was exactly the same and it almost sent me to the loony bin as I couldn't make him happy!

Wanted to kill mums/health visitors who thought that 'every baby crys' or 'colic will improve at 12 weeks' would fix my trauma.

I have used NUK bottles with DD and they are fantastic for minimising wind and teat is like nipple so good for mostly breast fed babies but strangely unavailable (small chemists).

All I can say is GET SECOND OPINION from many GPs and don't rely on Health Visitors. Persue and persue it. I didn't and it ruined my experience with DS so much I almost didn't have DD.

DS improved when weaned on solids and still hates milk so I wouldn't be surprised if was a lactose intolerance but he gained weight well and never threw up, just thrashed about during feeds and after. Was only happy when asleep. Maybe silent reflux....
Other thought was that my milk was so abundant that it can out too fast and caused gulping=wind... A friend with same problem now on second child is expressing off the first bit to reduce pressure of initial flow. If you think this is the cause, also try feeding lying down...

With DD I have found Gripe Water Mix (Boots version) very handy at relieving pain.

mad4myboys · 11/10/2009 20:18

yes, they are def the best for mine. Pain to wash and take apart but worthit IMO. Does sound like reflux to me. DS1 had reflux andwould projectile vomit EVERY feed but always 'thrived'. Ds2 has silent reflux so he isnt very sick but gets all the pain from the osophagus being burnt by the stomach acid. I had a nighmarewith ds1 and the doctors. I was in and out if doctors etc and i took till he was 3 months old for them to do anything. They both have/had it very bad. ds1 on meds till he was 1 and ds2 still on meds. Get a second opinion if your not happy. First thing they would do is give you infant gaviscon which is a powder you mix with the milk. You can buy that yourself so you could try that before going back to the gp?

facebookaddict · 11/10/2009 20:20

Ah just read again and realise you are fully bottle feeding so ignore the breast feeding tips... BUT... are you sure the teat flow isn't too fast for him? Maybe try going down one size (I know it seems odd advice but perhaps feeding is taking a long time at mo as he is gulping then stopping then gulping)...

Really wish you the best - this bit (rubbish screamy first bit) of babyhood goes quick even though it doesn't feel it and you will survive!

mad4myboys · 11/10/2009 20:20

just read facebooks post not sure if you thought OP is breast feedind? OP if your LO does have reflux never feed them laying down, it will make it 100 times worse for them.

mad4myboys · 11/10/2009 20:20

oooh x post!! sorry facebook

facebookaddict · 11/10/2009 20:23

Have you had ears checked? Baby might have ear pain and be unable to suck properly.

But does also sound like a speed/flow problem to me.

You said you didn't have strength to fight doc - find that strength and make them do the reflux test (I think there is a test isn't there?) and get some baby gaviscon from them. Follow your instincts.

mad4myboys · 11/10/2009 20:24

the test is a barium xray. Will take about 6 weeks to get the referral to the paed (depending on area)

facebookaddict · 11/10/2009 20:26

no probs Mad4myboys.

This baby problem guessing game is soooo stressful for poor mums. I have to say having had a nightmare with DS and a dream with DD that I wish I'd known about MN first time for the support. I felt I was doing something wrong and stupidly listened to the platitudes from docs/HVs. 5 months of hell.

mad4myboys · 11/10/2009 20:30

same here, i was clueless with ds1 with no support. ds2, have been on here and had so much support with his health problems
