Uh Oh, GMTV and Lorraine and breastfeeding in public...

Waiting for this to go wrong...So far GMTV are strangely trying to be positive with lots of comments about how women shouldnt feel embarrassed and its the most natural thing (saying that Penny wasnt there).

They are misquoting statistics wildly saying 2/3 of women dont ever breastfeed in public - rather than saying 2/3 of women who responded to the survey - which targeted negative experiences of breastfeeing - did not do so.

Anyway, apparently Lorraine is going to be discussing it on her show...there are lots of comments waiting for her...

Cynical me?

I don't understand this. This is at least the second time in as many years that GMTV have made an issue out of breastfeeding. What is wrong with them? Are there no real stories to cover?

I agree: Lorraine Kelly, for example, is a twat.

She should come on here for a webchat. I'd love to know why she has such strong feelings about breast-feeding and, horror of horrors, breastfeeding in public.

belgo · 08/07/2009 14:25

Good idea Kayz, let's all email GMTV suggesting Lorraine Kelly has her packed lunch in the toilet.

Maninadirndl it's also a bit of a non issue in Belgium as belgians are far too reserved to comment on a women bfing in public.

But really, 'titty time'?

verytiredmummy · 08/07/2009 14:46

I never had any negative experiences when feeding my little one (except from my mum who was massively embarrassed every time I fed him in public!). So I kind of wonder if it's an issue at all. I think women don't breastfeed because it's really, really difficult and no one helps you even when you leave several teary messages on your midwife's answerphone begging her to ring you back because your baby isn't feeding... (and breathe.)

I HATE the suggestion that women should feed in the loo. Apart from the whole yuckiness of it, do people not realise how long it takes?! My son used to feed for 45 mins at least. I certainly wouldn't have sat in the loo for that long.

What a lot of rubbish. Always liked LK before but have gone right off her.

Alestorm · 08/07/2009 14:47

Has anyone noticed that they've suspended the comments on the GMTV website? Did war break out while I was at my LLL meeting?

bella21 · 08/07/2009 14:54

We should arrange a MN mass bf outside GMTV

Marthasmama · 08/07/2009 15:15

Only if we do it in the indiscreet manner suggested by Shona.

bronze · 08/07/2009 15:16

Lets use the power of mumsnet

they have a section for viewers pictures on the gmtv site
has anyone got a picture of themselves breastfeeding they would post and we can all vote for it. (I would but would have to wait for dh to come home to take pic)

bronze · 08/07/2009 15:17

oh my goodness just looked at some of the pics yet she has the cheek to talk about discrete bf

PuzzleRocks · 08/07/2009 15:23

Lorraine Kelly, for example, is a twat.

PortAndLemon · 08/07/2009 15:32

I've never had any negative comments either, by the way. And nor have most MNers any time the subject comes up.

Stretch · 08/07/2009 16:06

I have a bf picture. Full boob or half boob??!! Where do we post them??

bronze · 08/07/2009 16:40

erm...

bronze · 08/07/2009 16:41

here

undomesticatedgoddess · 08/07/2009 17:01

I've now read what's on the GMTV website. I'm not sure how the 'research' was carried out and there may have been selection bias with people who have had negative experiences being more likely to respond.

But what is really interesting is that the authors claim that Mums felt most confident feeding in public in Scotland.

It's a real shame this is a magazine survey rather than robust research. It may have been a useful tool in the argument for extending the Scottish laws to the rest of the UK.

dawntigga · 08/07/2009 18:01

Maybe it's because I asked the following questions about the survey

Did the women in the survey who weren't ever going to bf:

ever see a woman bf'ing in public, if so what was their reaction?
know anyone who bf'd

I never watch GMTV any more.

I've been annoyed too many times by a load of judgemental, boring, made-up piffle.

confusedfirsttimemum · 08/07/2009 18:51

I've just read that link to GMTV. Responses to that survey were clearly very self selecting by people who have negative views of breast feeding. It says that 65% of women feel so awkward that they don't intend to even try to breastfeed. UK breastfeeding rates may not be great, but many, many more than 35% of women attempt breastfeeding...

thegingerwhinger · 08/07/2009 20:36

Lol at Lorraine I'm-going-to-wear-the-lowest-top-I-can-to-flash-my-bosom-to-the-nation Kelly talking about being discreet.

"I don't mind people breastfeeding as long as it's discreet". I bloody hate that phrase with a passion. It's right up there with "I don't mind gays as long as they stay away from me" and "I'm not racist but every black person I've met has mugged me".

I'm so thankful to all these people who allow me to feed my baby the way nature intended, so long as they don't see my boob. So generous of them.

Having said all that, I've never had a negative comment. In fact last month I had a little old lady come up to me while I was bf and comment on how lovely it was to see. I'd love someone to try to turf me out of somewhere! My dd is coming up to 12 months so I imagine I'm pushing the tolerence levels!!

It's always the same on GMTV. Makes me mad every time.
