Uh Oh, GMTV and Lorraine and breastfeeding in public...

Waiting for this to go wrong...So far GMTV are strangely trying to be positive with lots of comments about how women shouldnt feel embarrassed and its the most natural thing (saying that Penny wasnt there).

They are misquoting statistics wildly saying 2/3 of women dont ever breastfeed in public - rather than saying 2/3 of women who responded to the survey - which targeted negative experiences of breastfeeing - did not do so.

Anyway, apparently Lorraine is going to be discussing it on her show...there are lots of comments waiting for her...

Cynical me?

That anyone can suggest in public that you should feed a tiny baby in the toilet is absolutely disgraceful. When I'm prime minister I'll make it illegal to say stuff like that and woe betide anyone who does...

undomesticatedgoddess · 08/07/2009 09:40

My DH recorded the 6-7 slot for me this morning and I've just watched that now.

Andrew Castle has really gone up in my estimation saying he can't believe that people get offended by BFing in public as it's such a normal thing to do. I wonder if his wife BF?

Penny smith seemed to think it was OK as long as you're discreet

Did laugh though at the lady from mother and baby talking about mothers draping muslims over themselves.

The stats were crap and it's a shame they missed an opportunity to discuss the level of support women get. Their answer was to have more pictures of celebrities breast feeding - bizarre.

I am very tempted to e-mail gmtv. I'm quite sure that Lorraine doesn't have her dinner in a toilet!!!

alexpolismum · 08/07/2009 09:44

I'll vote for you, Chulita!

Let's email GMTV with the suggestion that Ms Kelly eat her lunch in the toilet - after all, that is what she is saying babies should do!

Kayzr · 08/07/2009 09:49

I've e-mailed them!! Feel quite liberated now!

StealthPolarBear · 08/07/2009 09:57

Maybe she could eat with others if she's discreet - no visible mouth movements, or visible "food going into mouth" movements? What do we think?

StealthPolarBear · 08/07/2009 09:58

taht second movement should be moment!

wahwah1270 · 08/07/2009 10:12

i had the misfortune to encounter a bus load of the disgusting lobby on a rural bus recently. The whole bus going on about how disgusting it was and how people should feed at home. I hate that this programme normalised their comments.

PortAndLemon · 08/07/2009 10:16

It's not exactly equivalent to suggest that LK eats her lunch in the toilet, though, because LK eating her lunch doesn't offend me.

Let's think of something that does offend me -- for example this kind of vapid offensive twaddle paraded across my screen as though it's actual journalism. I realise that I could just not look at it, but clearly it's a better solution for LK/PS to do it discreetly so they don't bother me. So all future GMTV interviews should take place somewhere very discreet, perhaps in a corner, and definitely NOT in front of any TV cameras (which aren't exactly discreet). The toilet would be a good spot for that if they can't find anywhere else sufficiently discreet.

HuffwardlyRudge · 08/07/2009 10:25

Lorraine Kelly, for example, is a twat.

dawntigga · 08/07/2009 11:54

Am sooooooooo glad I missed that - but are any of you really surprised? Just look who sponsers the weather

CynicalTiggaxx

Dalrymps · 08/07/2009 12:07

Who does sponser the weather???

Stretch · 08/07/2009 12:09

Nestle - lol!!

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/07/2009 12:21

Why can't Lorraine Kelly be more discreet. Such as buried on a channel that nobody ever watches, like the weather channel or summat.

Perhaps we can flush LK down the loo, Grange Hill stylie.

She is a twat, isn't she. And this is such a ridiculous, media perpetuated story. I breastfed everywhere in public and luckily nobody gave a shit. Or perhaps I looked scary .

TV shows like this piss me off because there are bound to be pregnant women who have watched it who are now anxious about bf in public.

And we have to have Zoo and Loaded at al at eye level in shops with various scrubbers with thier bazonngas flopped out (with a tiny star covering the nipple area) but feeeding a baby in public is disgusting. Daft sods.

Dalrymps · 08/07/2009 12:23

@ nestle!

smallblessings · 08/07/2009 12:34

LK annoyed me so much with the as long as it is discreet comments. I have enough to bloody do without worrying with I am being discreet. I am not going to start covering my baby's head with a blanket or re-arranging my wardrobe because of other people's weird views.

shonaspurtle · 08/07/2009 12:43

I don't believe that the vast majority of the mouth frothers have ever seen someone breastfeeding in public "indiscreetly". It's all in their odd little heads.

What is indiscreet bf anyway? Stripped to the waist spraying milk into your newborn's mouth as he sits in his car seat?

I suspect the loons think bf is indiscreet if they can in any way work out that a baby is being fed. They get all hot and bothered by the idea of the sucking. It's all in the mind.

Marthasmama · 08/07/2009 12:54

Aww Shona! You made me laugh and I woke dd up from her nap!

amidaiwish · 08/07/2009 12:57

I have seen mums bf children and be pretty indiscreet actually - boobs left hanging out while they finish their drink etc... and i do find it a bit offputting. Therefore i can understand the "discreet" thing, it's not about hiding away just not totally exposing yourself unnecessarily.

I bf both DDs in public, on trains etc... never had a horrible comment or look. Most people were like "ahhhh" or in cafes "would you like a drink" etc.

There was a thread a couple of years ago where a MNer who was actually ff had her baby in a sling in a cafe. A customer assumed she was bf and complained to the waiting staff that it made them "uncomfortable", despite (as the OP on that thread said) "having seen not so much as a flash of breast, bra or even heard a gentle slurping sound".

I think that demonstrates quite effectively that it's not actually discretion that some people are bothered about.

PortAndLemon · 08/07/2009 13:26

Here's that thread

christmasmum · 08/07/2009 13:53

I also used to BF everywhere and never felt uncomfortable, perhaps that's because I live in Scotland where it's illegal to ask a woman to stop?

However, one woman did used to make me laugh with her lack of 'discretion' she used to come along to a library story session and about half way through would whip her top off, pull out her boob, shake it at the toddler and shout 'come on, time for a drinkie'.

Cue mouths hanging open, more in amusement than disgust though...

sambo303 · 08/07/2009 13:54

good grief port... makes me more determined to bf out and about to try to normalise it. I did get some funny looks at my baby signing class as I bf'ed my 10 month old ds 2 weeks ago - not hostile just double takes as if asking what is she doing? only one other mother bf's there although many of the babies are less than 6 months, maybe it was ds's age rather than the bf that surprised them?

UpsyDaisyOne · 08/07/2009 14:16

LK is a ridiculous woman and should be ignored. When I was waiting for my dd to be born I saw an episode of her show where an upset woman was describing the general lack of support she faced during her dc's birth, and LK said something along the lines of 'oh that sounds awful, you must be so traumatised, of course I can't sympathesise because I had an absolutely wonderful birth in a private hospital' and then went on to suggest the woman would probably never bond properly with her baby because of the incident .
