Was it really necessary for Maria to say that she wasn't sure how much the baby was feeding and then for Audrey to say, 'ooh they say breast is best, but look at our Gail....'

It would be fantastic if the storyline did develop that way Rindercella. Tony is clearly going to do something mad, what with being the baby's dad's murderer and all .

I like Corrie but wish the Maria pregnancy and birth (and bfing) storyline had been a little more realistic.

Hi
Firstly - I am a huge Corrie fan and LOVE the show
However I was extremely disappointed to see the current Maria storyline and the very quick change from Breastfeeding to bottle feeding of Maria. All mothers who have sat up all night in agony and tears just home from hospital with a new baby who are trying to breastfeed her new baby must have been screaming at the TV on Monday night (6 July).
Baby Liam must be days old and Audrey is saying 'get him on the bottle', Tony was quick to get a steriliser on the go so Maria could then bottle feed, after mere days, of not even trying to breastfeed. Kirk's attitude was even worse! Surely the NHS in the UK cannot do anymore to promote discreet breastfeeding and yet his attitude was appalling!
Health visitors, midwives and doctors across the land must be so angry at Coronation Street by allowing this new mum who many young girls in real life look up to, to simply give up on Breastfeeding so quickly.
I seem to recall a similar attitude when Claire had her 2nd baby a few years ago - quick to go on the bottle to make everyone's lives easier!
I am a mother of 2 young children who by mere determination, willpower and gritted teeth breastfed both my children. I had plenty of Audrey's attitude from people around me but I knew breastfeeding was best for me, my baby and for society as a whole.
I totally understand this method of feeding is not for everyone but surely a responsible broadcaster like Coronation Street should think of the audience it influences. I can see many a girl this week - 'Ah well, stick him on the bottle- if Maria can then I suppose it is ok'.
And on another matter to see after a few days of giving birth - Maria is back in her jeans, with no sign of a bump - this is totally unrealistic indeed.
I was disappointed considering ITV 1 programmes such as GMTV, This Morning etc actively promote breastfeeding and yet in the space of a few minutes on Corrie - attitudes were regressed by 20 years.
I am sure other viewers would have felt this way but maybe due to extreme tiredness and breastfeeding exhaustion will not have the time to email in their frustration at what they saw!
Yours

I was really angry when I watched this. I realise a lot of women bottlefeed, but the way it was presented was just so negative towards breatfeeding. GRRR!!!

Ileach · 08/07/2009 11:58

Hi Andrea, great comment - similar to mine from yesterday!! I feel bad for the potential breastfeeders out there who may have been influenced by this, I will be complaining too. It is a subject that never should have been touched on unless it was going to be fair to both breastfeeding and bottle feeding mums alike. A real life breast feeding story line would have been good though to highlight the many potential hurdles that a breastfeeding mum has to get over, and for bottle feeding mums who had their heart set on breast feeding and exhausted all means of doing so. even now after 4 months me and my son have bad days, its not 100% easy but so enjoyable and rewarding.

It would be great if they could just treat breastfeeding as run of the mill everyday stuff, with no big deal made of it.

Ileach · 08/07/2009 19:50

ye that would be ideal

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 08/07/2009 21:02

Has anything come of this yet? Missed tonight coz I was on here.

I struggled with BFing with DS and put him on FF after a wk but want to BF this time round. Was quite 'hrrmph' with corro even though I generally can't be doing with those who push for everyone on earth to BF or feel guilty.

I can't see the point in the whole scene. I thought Maria was going to be strong and tell audrey where to go with her old fashioned 'do it my way' talk but she didn't.

Maybe it was showing Maria is easily influenced with her new baby and in the end this will have consequences? It could be some kind of foregrounding for a build up of new mum anger.

Or maybe Tony will encourage her to do thing his way because she is easily led by even weakling audrey.

Does anyone see what I'm sayin? or am I talking crap?

JoesMummy09 · 09/07/2009 00:49

Update

No more specific breastfeeding references in the next episode. But there are a couple of scenes with Maria and Tony which feature a conversation about feeding and there are some bottles shown.

Maria finds Tony with the baby. He hands him to Maria and says she can "finish feeding him" whilst he goes to make coffee.

The later scene with Tony shows Maria holding 2 baby bottles with the remains of formula milk in them. (I'm assuming formula rather than expressed breast milk as that would still be very yellow and this was def white and quite lot of it)

So I think we can assume no more breastfeeding, no trying to breastfeed and absolutely no bloody point to the slagging of breastfeeding on Monday.

If they had not had that scene on Monday I would have no problem, but in light of this episode it is just completely unnecessary.

JoesMummy09 · 09/07/2009 12:51

I've had an email from Coronation Street. Here's their email with my reply. (The email is reproduced as it arrived in my inbox... including massive paragraph )

Thank you for your email David.

I do not disagree with any of the characterisations - yes those things do happen. I also realise it is dramatic fiction (baby with no umbilical cord? No one able to just get married, or just have a baby without drama) But, it was just not realistic that there was absolutely no support on offer.

At no point does Maria suggest a bottle - so Tony did not "agree with her". She is obviously trying to breastfeed. It could all have been so very different if the "solution" had been to suggest a call to the midwife (which would have been drummed into her before she left hospital that that is what they are there for). Midwives and midwifery assistants also visit new mothers several times in the 10 days after birth to offer support, including for breastfeeding.

Perhaps if Maria had gone to anti-natal classes she would have known that babies feed very little in the first few days as all that is produced is colustrum, and it's not until day 3 or 4 that the milk kicks in?

Breastfeeding is really difficult. But there is support available, breastfeeding cafes, midwives, heath visitors, NCT telephone helpline... loads.

I suggest you have a look at the link I sent you to see real live mums reactions to that scene.

Also, where were the helpline details at the end of the programme? If these had been scenes of someone with an eating disorder, or suffering domestic violence there would have been contact details for support.

Regards

Thank you for your e-mail regarding Coronation Street and I?m sorry to read that you were unhappy with comments made Audrey, Kirk & Tony in a recent episode. Successful drama such as Coronation Street relies on realistic portrayal and characterisation. Our responsibility as Producers is to strike a balance between the realities of life and an awareness of the transmission time and potential audience. In the many situations addressed in Coronation Street we never set out to encourage unfair or prejudiced attitudes however there must be moments when inappropriate things are said or done, if no one ever demonstrates human frailty or ignorance it is impossible to identify with them. Audrey?s comments about breast-feeding were totally within the character that we have built over the past 30 years; she has always been a self centered, selfish and highly opinionated woman who has confessed to being a rubbish mother on many an occasion. Her remarks about putting a baby straight on a bottle are just the sort of thing she would say as she would never give so much time to looking after an infant; as she said she put Gail on a bottle from day one. Kirk comments about him being uncomfortable about seeing women breastfeeding are again just the sort of foolish thing he would say and Tony, in his besotted state will agree with Maria no matter what his real thoughts are.

Notwithstanding, we are very sorry you were offended and I can assure you that we have taken your comments on board and hope that this issue will not spoil your future enjoyment of Coronation Street. If you would like to take this matter further you can contact our regulatory body Ofcom at Riverside House, 2a Southwark Bridge Road , London , SE1 9HA .

Yours with Best Wishes, David Nugent, Coronation Street

They have sent me the exact same email!

JoesMummy09 · 09/07/2009 13:04

No! How rubbish is that?!

KingRolo · 09/07/2009 15:22

I have had the exact same email from Mr Nugent too!

His comments about the characters are spot on - Audrey is self centred, Kirk is stupid, Tony is besotted / stark raving mad, OK. But that's not the point is it?

Arrgh!

Anyway, I have also emailed ofcom so we'll see what comes of that.

If ofcom get 10 complaints about a show they have to investigate so the more people who drop them a line the better.

KingRolo · 09/07/2009 15:27
KingRolo · 09/07/2009 15:28

Ahem, that's Kev, not Ken.

God, Ken and Molly would be even worse!

PuppyMonkey · 09/07/2009 15:41

KingRolo - I think Ken and Molly would be just as believable actually.

Glad I saw this thread as now I know who to contact to complain about them dropping the Wednesday night episode from the week after next.

KingRolo · 09/07/2009 15:49

What? They are dropping Wednesday's episode? Oh no! Wednesdays are shite enough as it is, Corrie is the only thing that makes them bearable.

PuppyMonkey · 09/07/2009 15:50

I know. They're moving it to Thursday night. It's just not right - after 50 YEARS on a Wednesday!!!

fifitot · 09/07/2009 16:15

I got the same e mail too. I like your reply though Joesmummy.

KingRolo · 09/07/2009 16:22

Yes, Joesmummy's reply is great.

I'm going to reply too and tell him I have also written to ofcom.

They are obviously hoping we will just go away.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 09/07/2009 16:34

Interesting. Am going to write to OFCOM too.

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 09/07/2009 19:42

yep, ofcom it is, that is a bullshit answer. i'm sure some of their characters are casually racist too, but we never get them popping in line about the colour of someone's skin without their being some comeuppance.

what's the email address?

KingRolo · 09/07/2009 19:56

Ofcom complaints page here

Or write to Ofcom, Riverside House, 2a Southwark Bridge Road , London , SE1 9HA .

AitchTwoOh · 09/07/2009 20:01

shall we start a new thread with a, er, better title?

KingRolo · 09/07/2009 20:14

Good idea.

I wonder how many people have clicked on this thread hoping for some light-hearted Corrie banter only to be bitterly disappointed .
