I saw real life biological nurturing for the first time the other day.

I know all the theory, I have seen the videos, but I was completely amazed to see my sister's new baby doing biological nursing for the first time last week. Round these parts in the hospital, they are calling it laid back feeding which I think is quite a cool name for it.

Anyway, baby hadn't latched for about the first 17 hours, so I showed my sis the laid back way and the baby was on in less than 5 mins!

I am just blown away at seeing it for real. I so wish I had known about it when I had my ds.

and you're pretty cool yourself mawbroon for kickstarting bf for you sis and niece.

ForeverOptimistic · 26/04/2009 19:01

What is it? I have never heard of the term before.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 26/04/2009 19:04

How wonderful

AnnieLobeseder · 26/04/2009 19:04

So what's that then? Never heard of it....

AnnieLobeseder · 26/04/2009 19:04

Very cool that it worked so well for your sister, though.

humptyNdumpy · 26/04/2009 19:06

yy what is this?

Confuzzeled · 26/04/2009 19:09

When I had my dd I got out the pool and the midwife told me to lay down on some bean bags. She said that my dd would probably try and feed, I could just leave her to it.

After about 20 minutes my dd managed to wriggle over to my boob and latch. I was amazed, I'd heard bf'ing was hard and expected it to be painful.

I was then moved to a different room and was told to feed my dd sitting up. I then had days of latching problems and bleeding nipples. I didn't even think about lying back and letting her do it by herself again. I wish I had and I will do with the lo in my tummy now.

sweetkitty · 26/04/2009 19:12

I did it with DD2 the minute she was born, MW put her on my tummy covered her with a towel and she wriggled to my boob and had her first feed placenta still attached.

Wanted to do the same with DD3 but the afterpains we so bad I couldn't even hold her

Greensleeves · 26/04/2009 19:13

i did this with ds2 (before the pph started and the shit hit the fan again

it was so precious and special, so different from having ds1 and not being allowed to hold him at all

Pollyanna · 26/04/2009 19:16

I did it with ds2 for a long time as it was the only way he would latch on properly without causing me pain. my bfc showed me a dvd. It was amazing. I wish I had known about it for my older children.

Well done you for showing it to your sister!

warthog · 26/04/2009 19:19

never heard of this!

how does it work? are they lying faced down on your breast?

ruddynorah · 26/04/2009 19:27

yes my midwife had me do this as soon as dd was born.

ForeverOptimistic · 26/04/2009 19:28

Oh this was suggested to me but it didn't work as I felt so out of control lying down.

pottycock · 26/04/2009 19:29

We also did it this way, it was a lovely 12hrs!

pottycock · 26/04/2009 19:30

You just lie with them warthog, and let them get on with it.

foxytocin · 26/04/2009 19:39

here a baby as old as 6 wks still is able to do this.

there are 17 natural reflexes at work guiding the baby. only 3 instincts when mothers latch the baby.

many women struggling with latch in the early days would be helped by this.

giveusabreak · 26/04/2009 19:52

Awww! I had seen the DVD but lost my nerve when the bf counsellor suggested it (too impatient and stressed). I think it's a great thing to try and must be amazing when it comes off

mawbroon · 26/04/2009 22:03

Thanks for all your lovely comments.

Being around this new baby is making me seriously broody.

aww that's ace. am planning on giving it a go with db3 when s/he arrives.
seen some lovely vids on another forum I use and it's so amazing

PussinJimmyChoos · 26/04/2009 22:29

That is lovely! Would def like to go down this route if have another DC.

Does anyone else agree that going back to nature as it were with some aspects of the birthing process i.e breastcrawl, is more in line with how the birth actually should be..i.e the blueprint of nature...iyswim??

neversaydie · 26/04/2009 23:06

Wow - DS did this. I had no idea it had a special name, but it was an extraordinary experience. It took us a long time to get it as 'right' again.

doulalc · 26/04/2009 23:43

Wonderful that you were able to help your sister out! Unfortunately "biological nurturing" was lost by many over the years, so many women are not familiar with it, but it is how many women have always nursed their babies. Studies were done on this many years ago.

Babies instinctively know what to do...when given the chance, "we" sometimes often mess them up without even realising it.

Have to be very careful that breastfeeding does not fall into the same pattern of being overly medically managed as labour and birth have become.....but the pendulum is slowly swinging back the other way....as it always does....

mawbroon · 29/04/2009 23:37

Just to update. The laid back nursing worked a treat!! Baby is now 6 days old and has regained most of the 8oz she lost.

Yippeee.

i knew about this but didnt know it had a name if you know what i mean. DS2 was a very traumatic birth and i didnt hold him for a few hours so feeding didnt get off to a good start. we had a bath together about day 4 and as we were laying in the warm water, he just sort of crawled up me and latched on. from then on breastfeeding just sort of clicked. even now he prefers to feed lying down

jfa99 · 01/05/2009 23:09

I had problems with my milk supply and the infant feeding team told me about biological nurturing. I was shown what to do and spent 2 days in bed with DD and it worked really well. It was pretty amazing watching her root and find the nipple successfully. It's being educated to HV's and midwives since November.
