"But in my ideal world, human milk (the lifeboat) would be available easily and cheaply for exactly this sort of emergency."

And in my ideal world too. But we live very far from this ideal world. That was my point about some people having to use planks of wood to survive instead of life boats.

Obviously, it shouldn't have to be that way but often it's a case of as needs must.

standanddeliver · 16/04/2009 17:22

You don't need an ideal world - just one where formula isn't ubiquitous.

Babies whose mothers have been unable to feed them have had/still do have access to breastmilk in other cultures which are far from 'ideal'.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 16/04/2009 18:16

Ah, didn't know this was Desert Island breast feeding!

Right, in an ideal world, I would have a vegan mother donating to said milk bank for those babies who are severely intolerant to cow milk protein. (did try going dairy free myself for a month, but there were still traces of it in my system and he got ill )

Beachcomber · 16/04/2009 18:26

If nobody was allowed to make money from "life saving" formula then I'm pretty sure that we wouldn't be in the dire situation that we are in at the moment.

Selling planks of wood, and promoting them as being as good as free lifeboats, whilst making tons of cash, is immoral and should have no place in our society.

WinkyWinkola · 16/04/2009 18:51

Who said planks were as good as life boats?

standanddeliver · 16/04/2009 18:58

"Planks of wood".

"Inspired by lifeboats".

WinkyWinkola · 16/04/2009 19:01

But if you don't have a lifeboat, wouldn't you be glad of a plank?

I need to lie down.

StealthPolarBear · 16/04/2009 21:58

definitely WW - but that's not to say I'd call it a lifeboat or think that the plank provision was adequate.

StarlightMcEggzie · 17/04/2009 09:07

pmsl standanddeliver

Note written on side of plank:

'Our course, a lifeboat is best, but you will need to ensure have led a healthy lifestyle in order to drive it safely.'

'For those worried about their health, a plank of wood might be considered. It requires no driving and has added varnish for extra protection'

tiktok · 17/04/2009 09:11

LOL @ Starlight

But just to keep the analogy correct - the lifeboat is the support system including human milk banks for women finding bf difficult. The plank of wood is, as you say, formula!

Breastfeeding is the ocean-going liner - but a better quality one than Titanic.

StarlightMcEggzie · 17/04/2009 09:17

Oh, - yeah - ta!

Plank of wood claiming to be adequate alternative to huge ocean liner

Think the titanic was alright though, it was a good ship, just it just hit a great blimin iceberg and didn't have enough lifeboats.

Remove iceberg or add life boats, or ideally, - both!
