with ds1 i used an Avent manual breastpump, it was borrowed, so i cant be sure if the squeakiness and stiffness was down to that or that particular make. what do you use and how have you found it. i found bfing very stressful 1st time due to a number of factors and i gave up at 7 weeks. i want to make a real go of it this time so having the right equipment will hopefully help me do this.

I was an Avent manual pumper for both children and was very happy.

trixymalixy · 12/03/2009 17:04

I had an avent manual which was good, but the electric version was much better.

Mini medela was crapola!

breaghsmum · 12/03/2009 17:08

so it was possibly just that particular pump that was playing up then?

I had a Tommee Tippee manual which was fine, and then an Avent manual which was slightly better.

BarrelOfMonkeys · 12/03/2009 17:27

I personally found the Avent Manual made me v sore, although that may have been down to my impatience over-enthusiastic use. The Mini Medela was much better for me, more comfortable and productive. I'm currently using the Medela Pump in Style (double pump) which has been fine - double pump is good if you intend to pump frequently. I've heard good things about Ameda pumps though.

breaghsmum · 12/03/2009 17:31

thats very helpful, i had initially decided to avoid the avent one but i might get it now and allow it to redeem itself.

I have got a tommee tippee manual pump which is fine, easy to latch on and comes with 2 attachments for the different sizes of bottles (Didn't realise that at first and felt like I needed 3 hands to balance the bottle!!)

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 12/03/2009 19:42

Tried with dd1 was rubbish with hand pump and gave up v quickly.

With dd2 I had started using hospital grade machines, then switched to a medela swing which was fab (worth every penny imho)

More importantly I also had proper advice on how to express properly!!!!

crabby · 12/03/2009 19:58

What was the adice on how to express properly,DIAPD ?

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 12/03/2009 20:16

I'm definitely probably not the best person to rely on for advice as it was nearly 20 mths ago and dd was nil by mouth, so not the average pumping problem, but it worked for me even when we left the hospital.

But basic things for me included having having a picture of her or her very close by to encourage let down.

And a process of starting on one breast for a few minutes (5 iirc)then swopping breasts then 4 minutes either side then 2mins and then 1min.

With dd1 I'd put her down for a sleep (usually away from me)then have ago,try for a couple of minutes get frustrated without any let down apparent and give up thinking I was rubbish at expressing...

The ability to increase the suction on the swing (like the hospital models) also helped as did the stimulation phase. (To mimic the babies first gulps (not very scietific i know!!)

Don't know whether this is what is advised for other babies (not NBM)so please don't take as gospel as I would hate to put anyone off.

Good luck with your choice

Avent manual

bluebump · 12/03/2009 20:22

I liked my Tommee Tippee handheld one the best, I did go through about 3 of them but it was always reduced to about a tenner in Tesco and Asda. I did have a Medela mini electric one but I found it noisy.

FenLondon · 12/03/2009 20:44

I had an Avent iQ, found it did nothing in electric mode, was ok as manual but I was getting very sore hands. Hired a Medela symphony which was brilliant - not the cheapest option but I think it kept me going an extra three months.

Wolfcub · 12/03/2009 20:56

I had a tommee tippee handpump which was actually better than my avent electric one but it didn't survive more than 10 weeks of ex[ressing!

Ineedsomesleep · 12/03/2009 20:59

Avent Isis was terrible

Ameda Lactaline was fab. Would recommend it to anyone.

misspollysdolly · 12/03/2009 21:04

I used a medela electric pump first time round, and it was OK but v noisy. Then invested in the medela swing, which has been fab! Seemed a lot of money at the time, but it has been the best pump I've tried.

pushmepullyou · 12/03/2009 21:53

I've got an Avent ISIS elctric - love it, but dropped it and it broke. Bought a cheap mothercare hand pump and its fine too - hands are hurting though.

I had one Avent Isis manual that didn't work very well, whereas the replacement did, and it was my favourite pump of all.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 12/03/2009 22:15

Ameda Lactaline is awesome - dd couldn't breastfeed so I pumped full-time for her for 6 months and the pump kept going and in fact has since been used by two friends - a real investment.

luvaduck · 12/03/2009 22:26

medela swing is great

medela mini electric sounds like a vibrator (not that i've tried the latter sadly, but 'tis VERY loud)

tigerdriver · 12/03/2009 22:28

Had an Avent manual. Used it for about a year, incessantly. It was very good, but I don't suppose many of us get a chance to do a real road test on several!

SausageRoleModel · 12/03/2009 22:35

another vote here for the medela swing. about 80 quid but does the job quickly, efficiently and painlessly every time. The only one thats supposed to top it is the lactoline, but i think its more expensive again.

Babbity · 12/03/2009 22:38

Avent manual - good but not for large volumes
Ameda Lactaline - brilliant. bought on ebay sold on ebay for a profit!

amidaiwish · 12/03/2009 22:42

i used avent manual for DD1 but was only expressing occasionally. it did the job but could get squeaky, i had to express at 4am - it poured out of me at that time, other times of day it was just too laborious.

after DD2 i got the medela swing and it was brilliant. i pumped much more and for longer as she had allergies so moving her to formula was a nightmare. stopped and started bf quite a few times and the medela swing was worth every penny.

i've heard lansinoh have brought out a manual pump - i wonder if that is good?
