wondering if this could be the answer to sore nipples as me and dd2 end up lying like this naturally after have forced self to sit upright and bf...seems to natural

have you tried it? do you let them just self attach?

Bump for you

suwoo · 08/03/2009 15:05

Found a thread about it on the la leche forum here. This is another thing for me to add to my 'breastfeeding folder'.

foxytocin · 08/03/2009 18:21

yup. with dd2 i could latch her easily on my right nipple but not my left one so I did biological nurturing and she 'showed' me how to latch her onto my left.

dinny · 08/03/2009 19:30

foxy, can you tell me how you did it? just lay down and let them latch themselves?

have done that with dd for the last couple of feeds and the initial latch hurts less than in cradle position

just so wary of doing further damage to nipple....

I was very keen before I had DS2 and watched a dvd etc. When it came to it DS2 kept falling off me and absolutely hated the whole experience every time we tried. He never did self attach. Lovely idea though!

Dinny on the dvd I watched they talked about biological nurturing as the answer to sore nips so it has to be worth a try.

I can't get my computer to play the link, so can't really see what this is, but fwiw, my first was vvv hard to feed the way I was taught, and with my 2nd and third I lay down and fed and coslept when feeding and we were all much happier as a result.

foxytocin · 09/03/2009 06:09

you can start out semi reclining in bed bolstered by pillows. leave baby in nappies, you unclothed on top. Lay the baby tummy to tummy (longtitudinally rather than horizontally) with his head on your chest. Your baby should be fairly settled and alert at the start. (If he is too hungry he may become frantic before he can achieve a latch.) Give him time to make his way to one of your breasts then nipple. Your role is to keep him safe from rolling off one side or the other.

hello, all - thanks for the posts

right, have been doing this position for the last 24 hours and dd really seems to like it and just latches herself

I'd always preferred to feed lying down with ds and this feels even better

in fact, we spent a lot of the night like it as she was really wakeful

nipples seem to be healing, though initially latch is still painful it's not as bad as when trying to cradle and somehow easier to cope with when lying down!

ps. tell me the mw I saw yesterday is totally wrong saying a week-old bf baby can sleep all night with just one feed at 11pm....

felt so undermined and like I am doing it all wrong, ended up in tears later (even though I KNOW she's not right)

Ha! My 5 month-old won't go through the night with one 11pm feed! Although perhaps you don't really want to know that.

I love the look of the nuturing position - something to try this evening I think, when DD2 gets a bit grumpy and tired.

BCLass · 09/03/2009 16:54

Dinny - your midwife is a loon (but you knew that I think!!)

Poledra · 09/03/2009 16:55

My 8 mo doesn't go through the night on one 11pm feed.......... not sure that you want to hear that

oh, ds shared a bed with us feeding all night till 2.5 years! was just so surprised to hear someone actually say a week-old bbay could be put to bed and not wake for more than one feed!

the position is SO comfy though, it's lovely

Dinny my week old BF baby would have slept through the night with one feed at 11pm but it was a bad thing...he was jaundiced and too sleepy. So I set an alarm and fed every 3 hours anyway. It is not normal or good for them. Your MW is a dangerous loon.

I am so glad that BN is working for you. I thought it looked brilliant but my DS2 is a very odd baby and doesn't do any of the things I thought normal babies did, eg feed all night etc like DS1 did.

dinny · 10/03/2009 15:30

dangreous loon, lol

saw my usual mw today who said all the things I thought - feed on demand all the time, they feed all night in the early days, let her etc etc

dd still jaundiced, but she says she's getting there

sweetkitty · 10/03/2009 15:35

My 8 month old does not go through the night on one feed either.

Am going to try that position now, I prefer feeding lying down too, preferably asleep

dinny · 10/03/2009 15:47

I'd say it'd be great with an older baby who has perfected their latch, Sweetkitty

let us know how you get on!

OP posts:
Beantin · 10/03/2009 15:54

I was told to try it due to let down being too quick and sore nipples. However, he doesn't seem to latch as well as cradle posiiton. I lie back with cradle instead. If lying down too much, he seems to pull on me - I have small breasts though, so don't hang.

dinkystinky · 10/03/2009 16:05

Dinny - I was told to try it (due to ferocious let down making DS2 choke). It did help with DS2 abit but he kept falling asleep in it after 5 minutes (too comfortable I think!). It is very comfy though and great for night time feeds when you want them to be sleepy.

Oh, and your midwife is a loon...

dinkystinky · 10/03/2009 16:05

P.s. and I did let DS2 self-attach when he woke up again; he's pretty good at latching on properly...

StercusAccidit · 10/03/2009 16:08

Nothing better than lazing in bed with DS feeding happily IMO.
And nature dictates that you protect them from falling off the bed or rolling on them.
Never BF DS1 like this due to all the co-sleeping doom mongers but do with DS2 every night and every morning, and when ever else i get the chance. Its lovely
Feel like a chilled out pig or dog with piglet/puppy attached lol
