wondering if this could be the answer to sore nipples as me and dd2 end up lying like this naturally after have forced self to sit upright and bf...seems to natural

have you tried it? do you let them just self attach?

I know brilliant idea cos lets face it.. it does

StercusAccidit · 10/03/2009 17:52

Because of this thread and the feeling i got (warm n fuzzy..) i just went and fed DS in bed.. funny cos he is normally squeaking away by now for playtime but he is sitting here so relaxed must do that more often lol

suwoo · 10/03/2009 21:43

I've just googled your name too- good one. Tis my favourite expression.

Thanks to all for the very useful info on this thread and for what its worth my 2.3 year old has never slept through from 11pm after a (formula) feed....but you really didn't want to hear that

liath · 10/03/2009 21:54

Such a shame this isn't more widely known about as I'm sure it could help a lot of women with the latch in the early days. I'd never heard of it but I remember when ds was very little I had him lying on my chest and then he woke up and started wriggling off boob-wards rather purposefully! I'll never forget what a lovely comfortable feed that was & I'd never have believed a newborn was capable of doing it physically.

It reminded me of seeing a nature program about kangaroo babies which are born incredibly immature grimly making their way up to the mother kangaroos nipple then just latching on and staying put for weeks .

StercusAccidit · 11/03/2009 14:30

Lol liath i remember a few weeks ago having little DS asleep on my chest and he did the same leaving a trail of dribble from the middle of my chest down to my boob

He also tries to latch on when we're in the shower hehe
I think its wonderful when i remember only a few weeks ago because of the pain caused by him being TT i couldn't hardly bear to feed him and hoped to GOD he would sleep longer

So much better now i could cry
And he does sleep through the night if he cluster feeds, last feed at 11-12 ush, then a short drive in the car maybe, then into bed, and wakes between 7-8
He's done this since birth with the occasional (very) 4-430 am wake up and feed in bed.

suwoo · 11/03/2009 16:03

My 2 year old still wakes up every 3 hours.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/03/2009 16:10

Does watching that video make anyone else broody all over again? DS is only 7.5 months old!!!

I'm going to give that position a try later, it looks so lovely and snuggly. My baby has NEVER been that still and calm during feeding, surely the little chap in the film is asleep?

StercusAccidit · 11/03/2009 16:17

Su don't worry i probably have it all to come..pride before fall and all that lol

Just enjoying it while it lasts

suwoo · 11/03/2009 16:24

Well, my third is going to sleep . I'm determined to breastfeed this one, so maybe it will contain a magic sleep ingredient.

StercusAccidit · 11/03/2009 16:27

Brandy

For medicinal purposes of course!

EachPeachPearMum · 11/03/2009 16:58

dinny- this is the position my bf counsellor showed me to feed in when I was in agony from ds' tongue-tie.
Worked for us, until he sorted out his latch.

dinny · 13/03/2009 16:06

and did you help him latch on or leave him to it, EPPM?

OP posts:
Peachy · 13/03/2009 16:11

I've been naturally feeeding ds4 like this for almost a year; its harder now as he is heavier but just about stillworks

Tis a amrvellous position

EachPeachPearMum · 13/03/2009 16:57

dinny- I just let him do it- he worked it out pretty quickly
I did put his mouth pretty close though- wasn't going to make him do that crawling reflex thing.

dinny · 13/03/2009 18:20

does he latch on well enough for you to avoid sore nipples?

OP posts:
EachPeachPearMum · 13/03/2009 18:47

Oh my goodness- yes! I wouldn;t still be able to feed if he didn;t- he is an utter milk monster- putting on 1lb per week
Once he'd worked out how to latch properly, I switched positions, to normal sideways holding- he is pretty big for 5 weeks, and this is better for us now.
We did have to do a bit of 'practising' - latching, me taking him off, him latching again... but we sorted it in a day.

When he went onto his growth spurt last weekend- I used it again, as nipples were getting sore with the amount of feeding- its definitely more comfortable nippple wise than other holds- no idea why really!

I really wish Id know about it with dd- she has torticolis (neck problem) and really hated feeding on the left- this would have helped enormously.

dinny · 14/03/2009 13:10

wow, well done!

was it painful initially when you let him latch onto sore nipples himself? am asking as the thought of letting dd loose on my sore side is a bit daunting!

OP posts:
EachPeachPearMum · 15/03/2009 14:08

erm- yes it was... but it stopped almost immediately.
They improved all the time tbh.

PinkTulips · 15/03/2009 15:11

i do this with ds2 as my let down on the rh side is too fast for him.

can't really let him self attach though as he latches on to the wrong part of my boob and bruises me!
