i have noticed that formula is not eligable for club card points. is this to incourage breastfeeding. i have emailed them to ask but have no reply.

They won't. If they do, Tesco (or anywhere else) is breaking the law.

peppapighastakenovermylife · 18/02/2009 13:51

lol apostrophe, maybe we can get bar codes tattooed on them. That would definitely have the DM up in arms at rows of bf mums getting their boobs out at the tills...

pud1 · 18/02/2009 14:06

i have got a picture of a yound check out lad at my local tescos face if i did that

use sma progress and you will get the points as it is a follow on milk suitable from 6 months

islandofsodor · 18/02/2009 14:13

The law is designed so that parents don't decide which brand of formula to use based on special offers or discounts.

It is fine to have permantly reduced price formula, not fine to have a double points, half price, money off offer one week then the next week the mum finds the price has shot up.

pud1 · 18/02/2009 14:14

does progress taste different. i have been thinking about changing but cant see the point if she is happy on sma gold

Infant formula is not treated like ciggerettes or alochol. You do not pay extortionate rates of tax on infant formula, and as far I know people on income support cannot get ciggerettes for free.

Tescos are just following the law on the promotion of formula. I can't see what the fuss is about, its not as if its a significant amount of money.

pud1 · 18/02/2009 14:23

i think this is about more than money. its about freedom of choice and not being penilised for there choice

You are not being penalised - rather, you are not being incentivised.

Anyway, if its that important to you to get the clubcard points you can switch to follow on as your DD is over 6m.

MamacitaGordita · 18/02/2009 14:28

I can understand the frustration pud1 but like another poster said it has to be a total blanket ban otherwise the formula companies would seek out every tiny loophole to promote/advertise. They are keen to do so because advertising works- it is powerful stuff so IMO the ban is a good thing- even if it means no points!

i just dont think that making people who choose to ff feel guilty is the way to encourage breast feeding.
you dont get points on cigarettes and they are not advertised as they are really bad for your health and put a massive strain on the health service. this we accept but i dont see that choosing to ff is as bad as choosing to smoke.
my question would be has it improved the rate of bf since this ban

pud1 · 18/02/2009 14:47

am also pg with number 2 PregnantHedgeWitch. this may be why i am getting wound up

SoupDragon · 18/02/2009 14:47

How on earth is not giving clubcard points on infant milk making you feel guilty??

SoupDragon · 18/02/2009 14:49

As an aside, I believe the extra iron in follow on milk is a red herring as the baby simply excretes the majority of it, undigested and unabsorbed. It is a marketing ply pure and simple.

pud1 · 18/02/2009 14:51

well they are not allowed to give the points as it is seen as a product that should not be promoted. in banning promotion you are giving the message that it is not good thing to be buying

OP posts:
pud1 · 18/02/2009 14:54

just out of interest is there anyone here who thinks this law is right and also chooses not to breastfeed

OP posts:
islandofsodor · 18/02/2009 14:59

I totally believe that this law is right and I chose to formula feed dd from birth.

My decision not to breastfeed was based on misinformation and advertising that was later found to be flouting the law.

I don;t feel guilty any more, I feel angry that the system failed me.

SoupDragon · 18/02/2009 14:59

They don't give points on lottery tickets or gift cards either. Feel free to feel guilty about your purchase of those too

pud1 · 18/02/2009 15:08

maybe i stand corrected islandofsodor but what was the misinformetion you were given.

SoupDragon - lottery tickets i understand as it is gambling. but cards, i dont get either

OP posts:
charitygirl · 18/02/2009 15:12

It is in the public interest for as many women as can (and that is the overwhelming majority - 95% of women in some countries breastfeed) to breastfeed. That's all.

SoupDragon · 18/02/2009 15:12

It is because by giving you points they are effectively discounting the price. By giving points on a £5 gift card, you effectively pay, say, only £4.95 for it (no idea of the actual amounts BTW). Ditto for prescription medicines - they cost what they cost so you can't have a discount.

Infant formula is the same - by offering you points on it they would effectively be offering you a discount which they are not allowed to do.

It's not to do with the promotion aspect, it is about discounting the cost.
