Oh no, not again... HOW do you answer the question 'are you still breastfeeding'?

I'm sure we've all had comments such as 'are you STILL breastfeeding' and 'how long are you planning to breastfeed for'. And there have been many threads on here about this recently (and I'm sure, in the past). But I guess I feel I've had one too many questions like that... my father asked me (in a very kind, nice, non-accusing way: but actually very awkwardly / clearly feeling uncomfortable): 'so, how's the feeding going'. 'Fine', I said, 'DS is now eating solids very well, gradually increasing them'. 'And are you still also breastfeeding him' asks my father. 'Well yes, but the solids are increasing quite a lot' (not true, they haven't increased THAT much), I answer, trying to sidestep the issue. 'But apart from the solids... you're still breastfeeding, aren't you'? said my father, clearly not happy to let go of the issue.

Just for background. Point one: my baby is 6 months old & one week. Point two: my father has always been supportive of the breastfeeding (theoretically) but in practice VERY awkward & embarrassed about it. I basically know that both my parents are now waiting for me to announce that the bf is over, & then they'll relax. Whenever they have an opportunity they make comments about how 'tiring' it must be for me, or how 'big' the baby is, perhaps needing other milk () The thing is, I've ignored it in the past, but now that it's over 6 months of bf, I'm more & more uncomfortable about it & don't know how to respond.

So: how would you respond? I'm tempted to lie... but isn't that completely silly & wrong on so many other levels?

I'm sick of the expression too. I think your response would be great (variemai na s'akouo allo). But I'm usually not courageous enough to say things like that

"Yes, but she'll be finished in a few minutes. Why? Did you want me to do something?"

Good one Alice

My DS is nearly 13 months and I am still feeding and getting all those comments to which I reply
"yes I am and I will do until he wants to stop although I might have to rethink if I am still feeding once he gets to 15" its the same response I have given since he was born and it makes people either
a - laugh
b - think I am completely bonkers

At the end of the day my view is that the decisions you make about breastfeeding are nothing to do with anyone else.
Sounds like you are doing a grand job.

Maria - Ok, what does 'variemai na s'akouo allo' mean? I did about 15 minutes of Modern Greek for my work at one point, and fall somewhat short of being able to order a meal!

My MIL has asked me 'How long do you think you'll feed him yourself?' almost every time we meet, since he turned 5 months. I smile (through gritted teeth) and usually say 'Until either he, or I, get fed up with it!'. Now my SIL (who is a GP, ffs!) has started asking me too. DS is 11m. Can I just say 'I refer the Honorable Member to the answer I gave some moments previously'?

neenztwinz · 15/02/2009 22:05

Whenever anyone asks me I am PROUD to say yes I am still BFing (it has never occured to me that it is a criticism )

Can't your mum explain to your dad that it is OK or is she a bit funny about it too Maria?

Maria2007 · 15/02/2009 22:10

'den variesai' means 'why do you bother' (or something like that).
'variemai na s'akouo allo' means 'I can't bother listening to you anymore' or 'I'm bored of listening to you anymore'

MamaHobgoblin, as for your MIL & SIL...what can I say, you have my sympathies. What is it about bf that makes everyone so anxious, I wonder ...

Neenz- my mum is also a bit funny about it (probably more than my dad actually)...

Not read the whole thread, but I live in an are with a low feeding rate / classed as 'economically challanged area' , so I get this a lot when out, especially at if I am at the family centre, I always answer:

"yes, it's great, isn't it? the ultimate convienence food"

If pressed:

"well, if I feed to a year I don't have to faff around with formula, plus no periodsso really I've every reason to continue. Besides it's my only chance to sit down with a coffee"

vlc · 15/02/2009 23:03

If I'm ever asked, I'm plumping for blunt honesty;
"Oh, you know, till she's at least 2, obviously. Maybe 3 or 4 perhaps... in fact if you wait a year or two she'll probably be articulate enough to tell you herself..."
