You need TikTok.

Can you ring your HV and ask for number of a local BF counsellor? Mine offered to come to my house if I needed her to (and I'm v rural) in the early days - perhaps having somebody there in teh flesh will help you

soremummy · 06/02/2009 15:14

Stick with it you will get there have you been in touch with a bfc?

Olihan · 06/02/2009 15:15

If you have a look on the Kellymom site that thisisyesterday linked to on the other thread you will fond MASSES of info on latch and positioning.

Also, if you google Dr Jack Newman there are videos of babies latching on and checklists of what to look for.

Latch isn't something you can teach through words, really. You need to see it happening.

I honestly would get in touch with one of the bf helplines, especially if it's been a while since she last bf. Sucking from a bottle is such a different technique that you may well need expert, hands on advice.

i saw my HV today, she said 'google someone'

she didnt have a number for anyone, only a breastpump hirer who was , in her words 'weird'

MamaG · 06/02/2009 15:19

Right, ring one of the helplines now - I think they can send someone out. Or tell you where there's a BF support group.

Olihan · 06/02/2009 15:32

Or there's Baby Cafes which are staffed by trained bf bods. There may be one close to you.

TBH, I don't think this is something you can do without expert knowledge. It's much more than just having a baby moon, popping her on the breast and hoping it will work. It's going to take a huge commitment and effort on your part so some RL support from someone who is trained to help you is going to be invaluable.

Seeing it really helps, some videos here:

UK ones I found:
ukfamily.co.uk/ages-stages/baby-toddler/baby/breastfeeding/breastfeeding-video.html
www.askamum.co.uk/Listen-and-watch/Search-Results/Video-tips/Video-Latching-on/
www.lansinoh.co.uk/latchonvideo/

US ones I found:
www.breastfeeding.com/helpme/helpme_videos/23_latch_on.html
www.breastfeeding.com/helpme/helpme_videos/video_informational_1.html
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zln0LTkejIs

Hopefully between them you can really nail the angles!

Good luck

giantkatestacks · 06/02/2009 16:28

would agree that you need to be seen by a bfc - do you know where your nearest drop-in is?

If they dont exist near you then you need to get someone out to see you - I know its horrible to pick up the phone but if you dont you might think that you didnt try hard enough further down the line and that would be awful.

Am so full of admiration btw.

solo · 06/02/2009 16:36

I found La Leche League really helpful, though I didn't have latching on problems particularly.

TheProvincialLady · 06/02/2009 16:36

Really pleased for you that your DD is prepared to give it a go - and delighted that you are too I think you need to get expert advice and that means ditch the HV. Do ring one of the helplines and look for your nearest baby cafe. What part of the country are you in?

Disenchanted3 · 06/02/2009 18:11

Hiya,

Ive just been to see a breasfeeding counsellor

She showed me how to latch and DD did it!! She latched on, had about 3 sucks and fell asleep on the breast.

I know it sounds daft but even that makes me proud because I have anxiety issues and still managed to be brave and go see her, even phoning was hard for me, lol.

Ive hired a hospital grade pump from her too so am going to start that when DH has put the kids to bed.

TheProvincialLady · 06/02/2009 18:38

Gosh that is absolutely brilliant

I have an expressing bra you can have if it is any use to you. It means you can express hands free, which makes mnetting carrying on with normal life a bit easier. It depends on what size you are though - it is the large size so roughly up to an E cup with 34/6 back size maximum.

fishie · 06/02/2009 18:41

that is marvellous disenchanted, well done going to see the bfc.

Disenchanted3 · 06/02/2009 18:46

ahedgehogisHibernating · 06/02/2009 19:03

congrats disenchanted, I have followed your threads, but not known what to say. But am so pleased for you

Disenchanted3 · 06/02/2009 19:24

managed to get a few drops from each breast with pump so will cup feed DD that in a min, give her a few Founces then try and latch her on.

OP posts:
Olihan · 06/02/2009 19:32

Fabulous, that's a very positive start .

The other thing I have thought of is a lactation aid, either proper medical stuff like domperidome which you can buy privately without a script on t'internet. It will really get your supply going but it is quite expensive afaik.

Alternatively, there's herbal stuff like these which contain herbs believed to help milk supply. I've never used them but lots of people swear by them.

Oats are a also natural lactation boost too - a bowl of porridge for breakfast, oat cookies and flapjacks through the day, all with a perfect excuse!
