Can I ask a question about extending breastfeeding purely in the spirit of an enquiring mind, and not at all to cause a ruction?

Just wondered really, if the idea is that you should let a child feed until they self-wean (which it is as I understand it) then is a child who self-weans at, say, 20 months, missing out in comparison to one who weans at, say, 30 months?

If a child self weans at 30 months instead of at 20 months, that is 10 months worth of help you have provided against the viral and bacterial nasties out there.

Plus 10 months worth of cuddles and comfort and reassurance to assist his emotional well being.

A child at 30 months is 33% older than a child at 20 months. That is comparatively a lot of his life.

But if a child turns away and wriggles off laps at 20 months do you think it would be advantageoous to try and gently insist?

that's positive at least.

at least he's in the sytem young so if there is an issue to be dealt with it'll be caught early.... he might just be a late bloomer though, so hard to tell when they're toddlers what's normal toddler craziness and what's something to be concerned about!
