Advice needed - MamaG is struggling with BF :-(

MamaG · 30/11/2008 13:17

  1. The bras I bought are too small, so I have a borrowed slightly-too-big bra and perfectly fitting underwired bras (non nursing of course). Is it ok to wear underwired bras? Its a bit inconvenient, but until we settle into BF properly, I don't wnat to buy new as am not sure of size.
  1. DS was feeding almost all night last night. He'd feed, cry at the end of a feed, bring up some wind, feed some more, fall asleep on the breast then wake up crying 20 minutes to 30 minutes later. This carried on literally ALL NIGHT. Do you think he's just sucking for comfort? Maybe its time to introduce a dummy? He was 3 weeks old last Weds. He's been feeding almost constantly today and yesterday as well. Don't know if weekends make him more clingy as there's more going on (kids at home etc)

I'm shattered, have two other DC to look after. I will NOT give up, I will NOT! Any advice would be much appreciated

[shakes pompoms for MamaG]

Aitch · 02/12/2008 23:16

i feel your pain, mamag... dd2 was RELENTLESS at that age. she's 13 weeks/7 weeks corrected now and is taking better naps/feeds etc. thank christ.

re the dummy. i take it you've tried a clean pinky finger? and dd HATES those nipply dummies, won't entertain them. can tolerate a flat one sometimes but loves the cherry dummies. and the good thing about them is that they don't fall out so much. it's worth trying a few different kinds ime.

congratulations again mamag, you're doiing great!

Apart from the lack of sleep, sore nipples, having to take small children to school and collect them later, being fluffy in bed with a smoothie sounds lovely and I wish I could join you!

hope tomorrow is better Mamag you poor tired girl x

impressed with gandt and fiofio advice !

Klaw · 02/12/2008 23:33

Thinking of you MamaG, hope the info you've received is helping.

Agree it could be a growth spurt.

Agreee that poitioning is important, as in baby's head and body should be aligned. Think about how you eat and drink - head tilted slightly back, in line wih body etc.

Very early days yet so enlist family and friends to pop over with food, to do chores, have fun with those lovely dc of yours so you can stay in bed and feed and rest

No underwires

Get help from the BF support worker definitely!

Have you thought about a cranial osteopathy check up for LO? IIRC he was a little battered and bruised during birth?

Hi,

I live in Asia and here's what local chinese amahs recommended to replenish a new mother's "chi" (energy) and increase milk supply

herbal tea (fenugreek and fennel & aniseed)

porridge oats cooked with dates

chicken broth with lots of onions and ginger (to enhance good heat & energy flow in your body) + lentils to boost your iron levels

Beef or pork based broth made with ox tail or pork rib and lots of onion and winter root veg (pumpkin/parsnip/potao etc...) basically a stew. Only you add "warming" spices to your liking (cinamon/cloves/star anise etc.....)

Eat well and sleep well!

( they also recommend staying in bed 40 days and 40 nights : that's your babymoon.......I wish!)

MamaG · 03/12/2008 11:43

Well the baby lie-in isn't happening - bloody bloody MIL insists on coming today and won't take no for an answer. Expected 2ish. HV due this morning at 9.15 so didn't go to bed after school run, she arrived 10.30 and has just left - with an hour and a half until the arrival of PIL and baby sleeping, there's no point in me going to bloody bed! I'm going to eat some lunch and lig out on teh sofa!

Actually The HV is fabulous, I love her. DS2 has put on 1 lb in 2 weeks and is firmly stuck on the top centile line in the red book - she's ordered me to ring a HV colleague of hers who is also a homeopath who will advise me on what to take for me/DS2 to help us. My HV is very lentil weavy! She also said she'll do some 1-1 baby massage with me as we hit Christmas week as DS2 turns 6 weeks so the classes won't be on

Thats what she said, basically fio! I'm very reassured. She thinks taht some homeopathic remedy to help him with wind in his gut (not burps, t'other end!) will be useful at night, so I'm going to ring the woman now

thanks fio - just heard from mum - she's home! Apparently its her arthritis in some bone near her heart rather than her actual heart causing the pain

Phew for your mum Glad she is ok.

MIL hmmmmmmmm. I would say don't answer the door or hang a sign up saying you are in bed babymooning but i probably wouldnt (would just get cross)

Get to bed tomorrow though. Fantastic news on the weight gain, clearly full cream on offer in the MamaG household You are doing an amazing job.

BecauseImWorthIt · 03/12/2008 20:46

OMG MamaG - how much stress should one woman have to bear?!

Thank goodness your mum is OK.

slim22 · 04/12/2008 00:04

glad to hear your mum is OK

MamaG · 07/12/2008 14:55

update!

The babymooning was a non starter as RL got in the way BIG TIME. BUT I did take it easier, eat more and just feed feed feed. WE changed position at night whcih has helped hugely.

Fri night, he fed at 11, 3 and 6 and slept in between. Last night he fed at 11, 4 and 7 and slept in between () but has only gone to sleep half an hour ago since waking at 7am! Better to be up in the day though I think

Sounds like good progress

slim22 · 07/12/2008 16:42

sounds like he's starting to get the day/night pattern.

Never mind the babymoon. just try and rest whenever you can.

x

MamaG · 08/12/2008 10:35

MamaG You're doing fab. These early weeks are simply about survival. Having low expectations helps too.

I was just asking how you were doing on your other thread.

I'm glad things are getting better for you
