Are people scared of the word 'breast' or something?

Magazine interviews that mention breastfeeding always seem to say things like "I'm still feeding xxx" or "I'm feeding xxx myself."

I'm often asked if I'm feeding DD myself, well, obviously I'm feeding my baby, I'm not going to let her starve!

Why don't people use the word breast, is it dirty or something?

OK, I'm ranting a bit now, more bored than annoyed but just wondered if this gets to other people too?

Yes, I also hate the phrase 'are you feeding her yourself?'. I want to say 'yes, I am. With my breasts.' Thought was just me being intolerant so glad to see it annoys you too!

Miyazaki · 08/11/2008 16:59

no it doesn't bother me at all.

but I suspect I'll be in the minority.

nightshade · 08/11/2008 17:09

i have always used the term 'feeding myself' and feel comfortable with this. don't see what is so inherently annoying about it.

StealthPolarBANG · 08/11/2008 17:37

I don't mind feeding myself
(although it does seem to imply that some parents get the pixies to do it)
For some reason I hate "breast-feeding"

InTheDollshouse · 08/11/2008 17:44

"Breastfeeding" is a bit clunky though; I think that's partly why people shorten it to "feeding". I wish "nursing" was in common use here, like in America. Much simpler. It sounds odd to my ears though so I don't generally use it.

It really annoys me to as does

'Are you expecting' - I'm fucking pregnant not expecting the gas/ a delivery /friends for tea or something.

'The change' - it's the menopause for gods sake

'Time of the month' etc etc

'Nursing' - I sooooo don't get this one. You nurse old people as well. Nurses do nursing every day

In fact all of the pointless euphamisms (sp?) for woman's bodies

NCbirdy · 08/11/2008 18:40

Oh stop being so bloomin intolerant! People use different words and phrases - get over it!

blueskyandsunshine · 08/11/2008 18:48

Yes I avoid saying breast, I have absolutely no idea why.

LadyLaGore · 08/11/2008 18:52

i agree op and sunshine75
wtf is wrong with saying breast?

twee in the extreme to avoid all mention of of body functions of any kind

PuzzleRocks · 08/11/2008 18:54

@ sunshine.

TinkerBellesMum · 08/11/2008 18:55

I prefer to say I'm nursing (it's the original meaning and the others come from that which makes it more special) because there is too much emphasis on the "feeding" part of breastfeeding and then you get "he's using you for a dummy" or "comfort sucking" and they lose the importance they have in the whole process, then comes the whole "nutritional value after Xmonths" debate.

I think it's covered in "Mind Your Language" but I'm not at home so can't check the link.

EmpressTequilaLaMingMingGnarr · 08/11/2008 18:57

Well I laughed out loud at "Yes I am. With my breasts." And have had to spend the last 5 minutes explaining to my 2-year-old why mummy's laughing.

PeppermintPatty · 08/11/2008 19:01

I always say boobfeeding or boobie milk in RL. I don't know why.

chandellina · 08/11/2008 19:30

i actually get asked all the time if i'm breastfeeding.
i tend to just refer to feeding though myself - no need to be explicit when it's obvious where the milk is coming from.

girlandboy · 08/11/2008 19:33

My mil used to call mine (when I was breast feeding) "your tummies"

I used to wind her up by saying "oh these, my breasts?"

waitingtobloom · 08/11/2008 19:37

Breast, Breast, Breast, Breast, Breast, Breast, Breast, Breast, Breast lol.

Sorry that was childish - couldnt resist. My mum has graduated from "feeding yourself" last time to breastfeeding this time but the word "breast" has to be said in hushed tones.

SoupDragon · 08/11/2008 19:43

Oh I utterly despise boobfeeding or boobie milk. Makes me want to vomit. "feeding him myself" I can cope with but I use breastfeeding.

blueskyandsunshine · 08/11/2008 19:45

Boobie and boobs no. Bosoms I like. I suppose I don't like saying breasts because I think people will imagine my breasts when I say it.

I am a prize idiot, I know this.

PuzzleRocks · 08/11/2008 19:46

Interesting perspective Tinkerbellesmum. How are you?

How bizarre that woman who have given birth, from a VAGINA I might add , can't bring themselves to say breast.

blueskyandsunshine · 08/11/2008 19:46

I hate the word nipples too.

blueskyandsunshine · 08/11/2008 19:48

Vagina and penis also difficult for me. Do most people find these words easy to say?

PuzzleRocks · 08/11/2008 19:50

Blue!!!
Actually I don't really like saying vagina, it's so clinical.

crokky · 08/11/2008 19:52

I don't like the word breast whether it is used with reference to breastfeeding or just the organ. I actually find it really gross, I don't know why. I am happy with other words for all sorts of parts/functions, rude or not, it's just breast I really don't like.

DISCLAIMER: I did/am bf both my DCs so am not anti bf!

Am happy with boobie, my 2yo knows that his baby sister "eats" boobies!

ShowOfHands · 08/11/2008 19:53

Oh dear lordie boobfeeding? boobie milk? Nope, only said by people who call their vaginas/labia foo foos or minnie or some such silliness.
