Are people scared of the word 'breast' or something?

Magazine interviews that mention breastfeeding always seem to say things like "I'm still feeding xxx" or "I'm feeding xxx myself."

I'm often asked if I'm feeding DD myself, well, obviously I'm feeding my baby, I'm not going to let her starve!

Why don't people use the word breast, is it dirty or something?

OK, I'm ranting a bit now, more bored than annoyed but just wondered if this gets to other people too?

Well that's cool.. if there is one person like me that means I'm not quite a weirdo It's odd because we are quite rudey nudey round the house.. completely natural.. but the words stick in my throat like thorns.

DD pointed to DH when he got out of the shower and said "nose, nose" so I have adopted that for the moment.

SoupDragon · 08/11/2008 19:58

"blow your nose" has a whole new meaning...

I plan to use it around parents a lot. DH will get so embarrassed even though they won't know what I mean.

Well my FIL obviously has no hang ups in that regard, coz he asked me today "if I'm still breastfeeding?"
He seemed impressed that I was (ds is 10mo!)

I think boob is just more colloquial or slang. I have nothing against the word breast.
Just as I have nothing against the word ciggarette, but I still say tab or rolly. Or the words chewing gum, but I still say choddy.
Tis possibly cos I'm northern and can't speak proper (well I can, but I choose not to).

This has just reminded me of something that happened to me on a forum for Ann Summers Organisers. Someone asked how to use a piece of jewellery so I gave a description about how it goes around the clitoris. I came back to find they're *'d out the word clitoris and left an edit saying that it was unacceptable (I can't remember the word they called it, rude or something ). I found it funny but was also quite angry as it's an anatomical word and this was a forum for Ann Summers Organisers!

I'm doing well thanks PuzzleRocks. I think I probably didn't explain it as well as it could be explained, I'll have to see if I can find the link.

I can't say that I've noticed people avoiding the word breast in connection with breastfeeding. Although DS calls my breasts "boats" for reasons known only to him, so when he shouts "big boats" (as he does) in public, at least no one realises he's talking about my huge big breasts.

My dad must be similar bouncing turtle. Yesterday he said - god you've had those tits out everywhere this week: the hospital, the pub, the park.

We've never had issues talking about the body and sex as a family. I can distinctly remember my dad being sent for sanitary towels when I started my period. I do hope it will be the same with dd.
