Just saw an advert for this on telly - worth a look!

I'm quite interested actually... what do you think?

the unfortunate thing about posting online is that you can't always get peoples sense of humour! i suspect you think my DH doesn't like seeing me with make up on!!? far from it he thinks im nuts cause i don't leave the house until slap on!! ;-)

masalachmeleon, i agree with you. ;-)

Popi70 · 10/09/2008 16:52

talking about double bidding messages: on the one hand they tell us that we are not good enough mothers unless we breastfeed our newborns and on the other hand they keep making TV 'documentaries' to present breastfeeding as an odd and at times extreme behaviour (remember 'Extraordinary Breastfeeding' by katie buchanan?).

Lib76 · 10/09/2008 16:56

Popi70, I know why can't they just show bf as it is. no crap about wet nursing and cross feeding!
]they should have a bf that shows it from the first feed of a newborn and the differnt struggles that mother find along the way. that would be much more helpful, than showing people ordering bm online!!!

Lib76 · 10/09/2008 16:57

sorry for typos! trying to grap a quick coffee and muffin while ds napping!! ;-)

mawbroon · 10/09/2008 17:00

Breastfeeding as it is doesn't make good tv.

that's why they do all this "extreme"stuff

Lib76 · 10/09/2008 17:04

mawbroon, very true i guess. we only want to see the extreme indeed. just like the programme that was on 4 before the bf one!

Popi70 · 10/09/2008 18:42

yes, lots of 'circus-type' freak shows on the TV at the moment masquerading as social/health programmes.

"they should have a bf that shows it from the first feed of a newborn and the differnt struggles that mother find along the way." Lib76, totally agree with you. It could be funny and moving at the same time if carefully done.

Lib76 · 10/09/2008 18:49

Popi70, yeh very much so. it's the most amazing thing the first feed you give your baby, even if you are a little delerious!! well i was anyway!!

Popi70 · 10/09/2008 19:28

yeap!!! lots of extreme behaviour at our household during first days with newborn at home but then again breastfeeding or not breastfeeding the chaos is inevitable

FourArms · 10/09/2008 20:57

Just watched the programme (recorded it from last night), and thought it was quite eye opening. Hopefully might encourage a few more people who are bfing to donate milk? However, I'm not sure that they would thinking that it would take 6 hours per day. I know it wouldn't take me that long. I know I would if I could (I take prescription medicines so I can't... apart from to DH to help an eye infection ).

The woman who went to Sudan - good on her but what about her OWN baby who she left with her husband in another country. Was she deprived of her mothers milk for that time? I couldn't do that

FourArms · 10/09/2008 21:49

Hmmm, just read up a bit more on Vanessa Beecroft and there's a lot more behind that story than was shown on the documentary.

I made a joke? nvm

Popi70 · 11/09/2008 10:10

FourArms and TandemMum, thanks for sharing this with us. And to think that VB was construed as the most 'sensible' and the most admirable one of those interviewed on the grounds that her act was showing humanity. Her travel to Sudan was also an art project and it is likely that she profited from it as an artist (nice photos weren't they?)
