hello, would be so pleased if anyone could help.i have heard from 2 different midwives about how to make up a bottle.1 is telling me i have to boil the water etc and mix at 70 degrees.the other says to add unopened bottle of evian ehich has been kept at room temp, add to sterile bottle, shake and feed.i cant believe there could be so much difference in what is safe/unsafe.any advice greatly appreciated.

No. Not mineral water. The concentrations of minerals make it unsafe for a baby. The first one is correct. Use freshly boiled water (not reboiled as this has an increased concentration of something in it) and mix whilst it's just boiled. This should kill off an bacteria that's lurking on the milk.

Evian is generally considered fine. Other mineral waters may not be.

I had heard Evian and Volvic ok too...

notsoslimnow · 25/08/2008 21:46

yes thats what mw said evian or volvic only, but is that boiled?

Evian is OK because of its low sodium and potassium levels IIRC. I can't comment on the boiling aspect of it I'm afraid!

AvenaLife · 25/08/2008 21:47

They change the guidelines all the time. Your best bet is ready made cartons. I wouldn't use mineral water on a tiny baby.

SoupDragon · 25/08/2008 21:48

Problem is that the "boiled" requirement has changed recently hasn't it? It's all become far more stringent. I think that the more usual method is to boil tap water though.

notsoslimnow · 25/08/2008 21:48

avenal life.... is that given at room temp though

also a lot of mineral water has high levels of bacteria in it - not exactly sterile

notsoslimnow · 25/08/2008 21:51

ok so boil tap water each time at night?

geordieminx · 25/08/2008 21:52

boil fresh water, let it cool for no more than 30 mins to a temp no less than 70 deg - add to formula, allow to cool to correct temp.

You can however add cooled bolied water (or tap water if over 6 months) i.e to make 7oz feed:

4oz of boiled water, 7 scoops of formula, 3 oz of cold pre-boiled water or tap water if 6 months +, thus making bottle right temp to drink straight away

BabiesEverywhere · 25/08/2008 21:58

Here are the current NHS Guidelines

Quote from page 5....

"Use fresh tap water (not bottled water)
to fill the kettle. After it has boiled let the
water cool for no more than 30 minutes.
Do not use artificially softened water or
repeatedly boiled water. If you have to use
bottled water, you will still need to boil it.
It is important that the water is still hot
otherwise any bacteria in the milk powder
may not be destroyed."

You can give the cartons at room temperature. Apparantly it makes no difference to a baby whether the milk is warm or not (I was shocked at this, my lecturer swore it was true though). As they have already been heated to kill off the bacteria then they should be fine without being boiled.

eidsvold · 25/08/2008 22:24

when we were travelling - I used evian to make up dd1's bottles at times. I did a lot of reading and it was the one recommended as it had low levels of minerals etc.

I used to boil the water at night - measure out her bottles for the next day. leave to cool. Put lids back on and leave on the side ready to make up bottles the next day.

WilfSell · 25/08/2008 22:27

It's not just about the WATER...

You have to use nearly boiling water because the POWDER is not sterile and over 65 degrees kills any bacteria.

This is why it is no longer recommended to leave water to cool, even if boiled, to make up bottles later or next day.

notsoslimnow · 26/08/2008 09:37

thanks for all these replies...so to clarify can i 1) boil water enough to make up night time feeds 2)make 2/3 bottles up from that water before it gets below 70 deg 3)take those 2/3 bottles upsatirs and keep at room temp ready to feed to baby that night?

OP posts:
andiem · 26/08/2008 09:40

no you need to make each bottle when you need it not in batches
you would be better buying ready made cartons for the night

notsoslimnow · 26/08/2008 09:47

oh is see so i need to do it individually.if i go out for a few hours during the day then i cant take a couple with me? sorry to be such a pain but ive been given such opposing info, from midwives!!! some telling me to ignore current guidelines as they are far too stringent!
