hello, would be so pleased if anyone could help.i have heard from 2 different midwives about how to make up a bottle.1 is telling me i have to boil the water etc and mix at 70 degrees.the other says to add unopened bottle of evian ehich has been kept at room temp, add to sterile bottle, shake and feed.i cant believe there could be so much difference in what is safe/unsafe.any advice greatly appreciated.

no you can't take them with you you need to take hot water in a thermos flask there is a leaflet here click on the link to the bottle feeding guidelines 2007 and it will tell you all you need to know

please note i am asking about evian not boiled.....if i use tap water and boil it can i fill lets say 3 bottles mix with formula then leave a room temp and feed over the next few hours??? OR can i fill the 3 bottles with the boiled water then mix one at a time with formuls as and when needed over a few hours?

andiem have read the info many thanks for posting that,i suppose im really asking if these guidelines are not a little excessive ie having to boil a kettle during night then wait for 30 mins to cool and make formula mixing into the equation very hot water, sleepy mum and screaming hungry baby

It is not excessive, if formula is not made up correctly and is infected with a bug (like many batches have been found to be) a baby could die. Babies have died in recent years in Europe due to formula not being prepared properly

There are shortcuts which are safe.

  1. Buy readymade up formula in cartons, these ARE sterile and do not have any nasty bugs in them.

  2. Take to bed a flask with boiling water, a premeasured portion of powder (you can buy special containers which hold 3/4 portions of powder and a bowl of cold water.

When baby cries, pour boiling water and powder into sterile bottle and place bottle in bowl of cold water to cool to drinkable tempeture (or run under cold tap in bathroom) Shouldn't take long to make and more importantly it is safe.

babieseverywhere, thanks for the response what i dont quite understand is what is the difference between your way and mixing the formula with the hot water then allowing to cool at room temp for a couple of hours? would the mixing of the hot water not kill any bacteria in the formula when mixed? therfore only difference being you are allowing feed to cool over a longer period of time at room temp as opposed to standing in cold water?

"allowing to cool at room temp for a couple of hours?"

I might not have this bit right, but I think it is because the boiling water kills the majority of the bugs and therefore safe to feed direct to baby. But leave the bottle for a couple of hours or reheat and the remaining bugs will multiply to dangerous levels.

Bumping for a better explanation

babieseverywhere.....oh ok i see, i think maybe im just being totally ''stupid'' about this!!! i just cant seem to get my head around it. i suppose best thing is to just stick to the new guidelines..at least then ill have a leaflet to look at with instructions etc for someone who is being as lame as i am about this whole subject! .i actually dont know whats wrong with me, im normally quite intelligent..honestly! thanks for all the help.

Does any one get cloudy water when they boil Evian water.

LaraT · 05/04/2009 12:28

I know that they change the rules all the time, but when my dd1 was a baby i used to take a bottle of boiled water upstairs and just add the powder when i needed it. (the water was usually room temperature by this point)

I know that they don't recommend this anymore, but i have to say she was and still is perfectly fine and healthy! HTH

They really, really, don't change the rules all the time.

The guidance changed once about three years ago because babies had died because of unsterile milk powder.

There had been no changes in making-up-bottles-guidance for decades.

What is confusing is the disgraceful lack of understanding and confusion created by midwives and HVs.

When dd was little they advised that it was ok to make up feeds using the hot water, then cool and store in the fridge for 24 hours, this changed when ds was born to having to make them up fresh each time. I would use cartons when out and about, much easier than faffing with a thermos.
