Just wanted to warn people about the necklaces from the Breastfeeding and Baby Wearing site. I bought one and the FIRST time I wore it, while taking it off, the bead bit came off in my hand. It would have been small enough for ds to swallow too.

OOh, I've had a chunk of fossilised polished wood on a leather thong since I was a nipper - be great for DD, ta for the inspiration.
I have to put scratch mitts on her as she scratches me so much

I got one for my Birthday last week. DS watched me open it and his eyes lit up and when he starts to grab me (it really hurts when he gets a handful of boobs, and is embarrassing when he flashes me in public by pushing my top up!) I put it near his hand and he tugs on it instead. (not hurting me by doing this yet). Its also great for distraction when in the sling.

I got one of these : babybeads ones - I think they're great value and seem very well made.

I wish I'd had one of these, my DS used to fiddle with anything and everything while feeding!

On a similar note, you can get breastfeeding bracelets too, though they do a slightly different job. My mother made me one from semi-precious stones when I was breastfeeding my DS, and it was so useful and beautiful that I decided to start making and selling them myself!

I had BF necklace, said to be tested to X (some large number) kg stress, to be able to withstand tugging from a LO. You guessed it, she broke it

Eulalia · 16/06/2008 11:33

I had one I got on eBay which was very pretty. ds2 hardly got to fiddle with it though as dd kept running of with it! They are a good idea but not necessary.

vnmum · 16/06/2008 13:52

i have two and i wear them as normal necklaces too. i couldnt decide which i liked so ordered two instead. i got mine from here

ellideb · 16/06/2008 18:48

Here's some more nice ones here

GreebosWhiskers · 16/06/2008 20:46

I got one of these when ds was tiny & he loved it. The girl personalised it too so it's a lovely keepsake

This is another of those ancient threads that has come back --OP posted in 2005!

I just wanted to post that DH bought me some New Zealand greenstone (ponamu) it's a thin wedge shape on a leather string, and DD loves playing with it and chewing it, I think one of the translations for it is teething stone.

PInkyminkyohnooo · 16/06/2008 21:42

Pounamu

cali · 16/06/2008 22:17

have just bought one off ebay even though dd2 is 9 months. Lately she has been pulling my necklace that dh bought me and hope that it will keep her entertained. fingers crossed it arrives soon

Wisknit · 17/06/2008 13:02

I'd go for it. It's even worse when they get to nipple twiddling stage. I would do anything for DS2 not to do that.

mumtoo3 · 17/06/2008 17:32

i have just bought one for dd2 who is 7 months and it comes with her name and dob on it for free!

hope it works x

JustJaamy · 17/06/2008 18:14

I must say that having BF both DDs until about 9 months I never had any problems with twidlding etc. I let them hold on to my hand and stroked theor fingers while I chatted away to them. Seemed to keep them happy.

PInkyminkyohnooo · 17/06/2008 18:20

JUstjaamy lucky you-whenever I spoke to my DC's they would detach themselves to talk back or just smile at me whilst milk went everywhere!

JustJaamy · 17/06/2008 21:59

Well, DDs are certainly making up for it now...can't shut them up and the fiddle with everything! maybe I should have gotten them a BF necklace

Farhana · 19/06/2008 20:33

I make them too!

ET63 · 20/06/2008 10:29

I bought one from an eBay shop - it's very cute but LO sometimes puts it in her mouth, distracting her and making it less useful!

Quannoi · 20/06/2008 12:19

Are you kidding me? For one thing it sounds like another new and exciting way to screw money out of parents, and for another just how are they different from a normal necklace? DS1 was always playing with my regular necklaces just fine without injury or childhood trauma.

Am I missing something?

topsmart · 20/06/2008 13:02

I'm with you, Quannoi. All this 'waterproof twine' and 'non-glass beads' business -aren't they just plastic beads on plastic string? Nothing against necklaces; they look v pretty - but surely a rip-off?

BreastfeedingMum · 20/06/2008 18:52

I had one when I was breastfeeding my son and he loved playing with it as he fed I think it is a lovely keepsake now and I'll probably pass it down the family in later years! ;)

LuXander · 20/06/2008 21:38

I wear a fairly strong silver rope chain that was my Grandmother's, dd sometimes plays with it when she feeds. Unfortunately it only distracts her from groping and hair pulling for some of the time! I may have to get a pendant to hang off it... it's always good to have an excuse to shop

Roostar · 04/08/2008 05:02

I actually make Nursing Necklaces. Mine are completely different to everything else available. I started making them because my 2nd bub was constantly sticking her fingers up my nose and clawing my lips. I only ones i came across were rather bulky and dull. I wanted somethng bright, soft and engaging so i set to work and created a lovely felt charm embellished with cute buttons and other bits and bobs. Each one is unique and one-off and every stitch is done with love. The charm slides off the necklace so it has another option for wear. I've had great feedback from desperate mums. They truly can be a godsend!! I have my face to myself now!! grin
