"A couple of Sabire's likened ffeeding to smoking whilst pregnant
You have misread what I've said or you are deliberately distorting it to further your argument. I didn't 'liken' ff to smoking. I used smoking as an analogy to make a point about causation.
"and she also said that ff mothers do it for convenience"
The Department of Health Feeding Survey comes out every five years. It surveys the experiences of approximately 9000 new mothers. One question they ask on the survey is 'why did you choose your method of feeding'.
The majority of mums who chose to breastfeed state that they chose it because 'it was best for my baby'.
For ff mums the largest proportion gave this reason for choosing to ff - 'so someone else can feed the baby'.
You can check out the statistics at the DOH website if you so choose.
I admit though that there are many other pressing reasons why women choose not to try to initiate breastfeeding, and would not dismiss these as unimportant. I apologise for giving the impression that I feel MOST women who choose not to initiate breastfeeding do so for reasons of convenience.
The other statistics and research I quote can be found in the most recent edition of the Royal College of Midwive's "Successful Breastfeeding", or on the UNICEF site.
